Corporate governance and workplace democracy:some paradigms and paradoxes
The paper aims to explore contemporary developments of the debate on employees’ participation and workplace democracy. This paper particularly focuses on Company Law and its Review, EU social law and the EU Information and Consultation Directive and its implementation in the UK through the Information and Consultation of Employees (ICE) Regulations. In doing so, this paper has two objectives. First this paper examines various corporation theories in search for legitimacy for employees' participation in the corporate governance model. Second, this paper questions whether there are effective alternatives to collective bargaining as the best mechanism for promoting workplace democracy and justice, and the extent to which current legal developments can be used by trade unions and their members to their advantage. The paper analyses a variety of models, including the 'European Social Model' and South African Labour Law, for promoting workplace democracy and the paradoxes that they arguably generate in terms of their potential consequences. A Simple Microbiome in the European Common Cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis.
The European common cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, is used extensively in biological and biomedical research, yet its microbiome remains poorly characterized. We analyzed the microbiota of the digestive tract, gills, and skin in mariculture-raised S. officinalis using a combination of 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, quantitative PCR (qPCR), and fluorescence spectral imaging. Sequencing revealed a highly simplified microbiota consisting largely of two single bacterial amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) of Vibrionaceae and Piscirickettsiaceae The esophagus was dominated by a single ASV of the genus Vibrio Imaging revealed bacteria in the family Vibrionaceae distributed in a discrete layer that lines the esophagus. This Vibrio was also the primary ASV found in the microbiota of the stomach, cecum, and intestine, but occurred at lower abundance, as determined by qPCR, and was found only scattered in the lumen rather than in a discrete layer via imaging analysis. Treatment of animals with the commonly used antibiotic enrofloxacin led to a nearly 80% reduction of the dominant Vibrio ASV in the esophagus but did not significantly alter the relative abundance of bacteria overall between treated versus control animals. Data from the gills were dominated by a single ASV in the family Piscirickettsiaceae, which imaging visualized as small clusters of cells. We conclude that bacteria belonging to the Gammaproteobacteria are the major symbionts of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis cultured from eggs in captivity and that the esophagus and gills are major colonization sites.IMPORTANCE Microbes can play critical roles in the physiology of their animal hosts, as evidenced in cephalopods by the role of Vibrio (Aliivibrio) fischeri in the light organ of the bobtail squid and the role of Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria in the reproductive system and egg defense in a variety of cephalopods. We sampled the cuttlefish microbiome throughout the digestive tract, gills, and skin and found dense colonization of an unexpected site, the esophagus, by a microbe of the genus Vibrio, as well as colonization of gills by Piscirickettsiaceae This finding expands the range of organisms and body sites known to be associated with Vibrio and is of potential significance for understanding host-symbiont associations, as well as for understanding and maintaining the health of cephalopods in mariculture
Late-time Light Curves of Type II Supernovae: Physical Properties of SNe and Their Environment
We present BVRIJHK band photometry of 6 core-collapse supernovae, SNe 1999bw,
2002hh, 2003gd, 2004et, 2005cs, and 2006bc measured at late epochs (>2 yrs)
based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Gemini north, and WIYN telescopes. We
also show the JHK lightcurves of a supernova impostor SN 2008S up to day 575.
Of our 43 HST observations in total, 36 observations are successful in
detecting the light from the SNe alone and measuring magnitudes of all the
targets. HST observations show a resolved scattered light echo around SN 2003gd
at day 1520 and around SN 2002hh at day 1717. Our Gemini and WIYN observations
detected SNe 2002hh and 2004et, as well. Combining our data with previously
published data, we show VRIJHK-band lightcurves and estimate decline magnitude
rates at each band in 4 different phases. Our prior work on these lightcurves
and other data indicate that dust is forming in our targets from day ~300-400,
supporting SN dust formation theory. In this paper we focus on other physical
properties derived from the late time light curves. We estimate 56Ni masses for
our targets (0.5-14 x 10^{-2} Msun) from the bolometric lightcurve of each for
days ~150-300 using SN 1987A as a standard (7.5 x 10^{-2} Msun). The flattening
or sometimes increasing fluxes in the late time light curves of SNe 2002hh,
2003gd, 2004et and 2006bc indicate the presence of light echos. We estimate the
circumstellar hydrogen density of the material causing the light echo and find
that SN 2002hh is surrounded by relatively dense materials (n(H) >400 cm^{-3})
and SNe 2003gd and 2004et have densities more typical of the interstellar
medium (~1 cm^{-3}). The 56Ni mass appears well correlated with progenitor mass
with a slope of 0.31 x 10^{-2}, supporting the previous work by Maeda et al.
(2010), who focus on more massive Type II SNe. The dust mass does not appear to

Subsidizing Religious Participation through Groups: A Model of the “Megachurch” Strategy for Growth
Either despite or because of their non-traditional approach, megachurches have grown significantly in the United States since 1980. This paper models religious participation as an imperfect public good which, absent intervention, yields suboptimal participation by members from the church’s perspective. Megachurches address this problem in part by employing secular-based group activities to subsidize religious participation that then translates into an increase in the attendees’ religious investment. This strategy not only allows megachurches to attract and retain new members when many traditional churches are losing members but also results in higher levels of an individual’s religious capital. As a result, the megachurch may raise expectations of members’ levels of commitment and faith practices. Data from the FACT2000 survey provide evidence that megachurches employ groups more extensively than other churches, and this approach is consistent with a strategy to use groups to help subsidize individuals’ religious investment. Religious capital rises among members of megachurches relative to members of non-megachurches as a result of this strategy
GRADE equity guidelines 4: guidance on how to assess and address health equity within the evidence to decision process
Objective:
The aim of this paper is to provide detailed guidance on how to incorporate health equity within the GRADE (Grading Recommendations Assessment and Development Evidence) evidence to decision process.
Study design and setting:
We developed this guidance based on the GRADE evidence to decision (EtD) framework, iteratively reviewing and modifying draft documents, in person discussion of project group members and input from other GRADE members.
Results:
Considering the impact on health equity may be required, both in general guidelines, and guidelines that focus on disadvantaged populations. We suggest two approaches to incorporate equity considerations: 1) assessing the potential impact of interventions on equity and; 2) incorporating equity considerations when judging or weighing each of the evidence to decision criteria. We provide guidance and include illustrative examples.
Conclusion:
Guideline panels should consider the impact of recommendations on health equity with attention to remote and underserviced settings and disadvantaged populations. Guideline panels may wish to incorporate equity judgments across the evidence to decision framework
GRADE equity guidelines 3: considering health equity in GRADE guideline development: rating the certainty of synthesized evidence
Objectives:
The aim of this paper is to describe a conceptual framework for how to consider health equity in the Grading Recommendations Assessment and Development Evidence (GRADE) guideline development process.
Study Design and Setting:
Consensus-based guidance developed by the GRADE working group members and other methodologists.
Results:
We developed consensus-based guidance to help address health equity when rating the certainty of synthesized evidence (i.e., quality of evidence). When health inequity is determined to be a concern by stakeholders, we propose five methods for explicitly assessing health equity: (1) include health equity as an outcome; (2) consider patient-important outcomes relevant to health equity; (3) assess differences in the relative effect size of the treatment; (4) assess differences in baseline risk and the differing impacts on absolute effects; and (5) assess indirectness of evidence to disadvantaged populations and/or settings.
Conclusion:
The most important priority for research on health inequity and guidelines is to identify and document examples where health equity has been considered explicitly in guidelines. Although there is a weak scientific evidence base for assessing health equity, this should not discourage the explicit consideration of how guidelines and recommendations affect the most vulnerable members of society
