WKU Libraries\u27 Kentucky Live! talk series presentation, taking place in Morgantown Public Library, Kentucky on October 25, 2012, focused on the history of neighboring Butler County published in the Images of America series in September by Arcadia Press. The book includes many never before seen photographs of Butler County’s rich historical culture, its religious and educational institutions, and ordinary family life. The coauthors are Roger Givens and Nancy Richey. Givens is a Butler County native who has held a variety of occupations from barber, to coal miner, to power plant worker. He and his wife founded the Butler County Banner which they later merged with the Green River Republican, and which today is the county’s leading newspaper. Richey is a native of Mt. Hermon, Kentucky. She’s currently the Reference and Image Librarian for the Department of Special Collections at Western Kentucky University. She serves on the board of the Janice Holt Giles Society and gives frequent workshops on Kentucky genealogy

Helium-3 elastic, inelastic, and charge-exchange scattering from lithium-6 at 24.6 and 27.0 MeV

A target consisting of 6Li evapOlrated OlntOl a carbon foil backing was bombarded with the 3He beam from the University of Illinois cyclotron. Solid state detectors in /\E - E' telescopes were used tc obtain energy spectra of the scattered 3He and of tritons from the charge exchange reaction. Differential cross sections were determined for elastic scattering inelastic scattering tD the first two excited states of 6Li, and the (3He ,t) charge exchange reaction to the ground state of 6Be~ at energies of 24.6 and 27.0 MeV over angular ranges of approximately 200 to 1150 or more (cm). In order to observe the transition tOl the 3.56 MeV second excited state of 6Li, it was necessary to require a coincidence with the recoil nucleus at most Df these angles. The cross sections for this transition are compared to those for the charge=exchange reaction.U of I Onlythesis/dissertatio

Self-Reported Substance Use and Sexual Behaviors Among Adolescents in a Rural State

Background: Research finds a strong association between substance use and risky sexual behavior but more needs to be known about this relationship. Few studies have examined this relationship among rural sixth- to eighth-grade students. As such, the purposes of this study were to provide a descriptive profile of rural sixth- to eighth-grade students\u27 substance use behavior and sexual activity and to examine the relationship between substance use behaviors and sexual activity. Methods Participants consisted of a convenience sample of 10,273 middle school students (sixth to eighth grade) attending 10 public schools in rural Tennessee. The middle school Youth Risk Behavior Survey was administered to these students during April and May 2004. Results Analysis found that a large percentage of students had tried cigarettes, alcohol, and inhalants. Additionally, it was found that sexual intercourse had been initiated by 18.8% of females and 25.4% of males. Of those students who reported ever having had sexual intercourse, 75% had reported the use of cigarettes and alcohol. In addition, approximately 50% of those students reported marijuana and inhalant use. Conclusions The results suggest that substance use behavior has a relationship with the likelihood of initiating sexual activity. Additional longitudinal research with this population will be needed for explaining whether these select substance use behaviors are probable risk factors predisposing young rural adolescents to report engaging in sexual behaviors or a result of other factors
