    A PHONOLOGICAL OUTLOOK ON THE DIFFICULTIES OF LEARNING ENGLISH AND ITS IMPLICATION ON THE TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

    Learners of English as a foreign language frequently find it difficult to pronounce English words acceptably. Empirical data obtained from Professional Teacher Education and Training (PLPG) program at Universitas Jember illustrate these phonological difficulties. This article tries to look at the problem and propose possible practical ways of solving the problem. In the context of TEFL, Explicit Instruction and Audio Lingual Method are considered relevant for equipping learners with phonological knowledge and skills to produce accepted pronunciation. During pre-service education, phonological-related courses should be explicitly taught. Meanwhile, improving phonological competence should be part of teacher professional development program. There are at least two main reasons that greatly influence the choice of this topic, and both reasons are of my personal experiences.     Abstract : Vocabulary is the most important aspect of a language that must be mastered by the students who learn a language. In general, students have difficulty in learning English, especially in vocabulary because they lack of vocabulary and grammar of L1. Therefore, the English teacher is expected to be able to cover the students’ problems in vocabulary mastery. This research is intended to describe class X-2 students’ vocabulary mastery by using Narrative texts taken from the Internet on the vocabulary mastery. As many as 38 students from class X-2 who were detemined purposively became the subject of this research.     Abstract : Tenses are very important in learning English because they become the basic knowledge in mastering the language skills. In English teaching and learning process, the students are expected to understand the materials given by the teacher. Animated pictures in power point presentation can be the appropriate teaching media and interesting materialsto teach tenses. The purpose of the research was to investigate the effect of using animated pictures in power point presentation on the seventh grade students’ tense achievement at SMP Negeri 2 Balung.The research design was quasi experimental research with pretest-posttest nonequivalent group design. The primary data were collected from the scores of the pretest and posttest to compare the two different groups before and after the treatment, and the result was analyzed by using Independent sample T-Test (SPSS).The result of the research showed that the use of animated pictures in power point presentation had a significant effect on the seventh grade students’ tense achievement at SMP Negeri 2 Balung.     IMPROVING CLASS VIII A STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT BY GIVING VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL REINFORCEMENT AT SMPN 1 SUKOWONO JEMBER IN THE 2011/2012 ACADEMIC YEAR

    Abstract.This classroom action research was intended to improveclass VIII A students’ speaking achievement at SMPN 1 Sukowono. There are 37 students and most of them have difficulty in speaking English.To solve the problems, the researcher used reinforcement. The form of reinforcement was verbal and non-verbal reinforcement. The result in the first cycle showed 70.27% of the students were active in the first meeting and 75.67% of the students were active in the second meeting.There were 67.5% of the students achieved ≥65 in speaking test. Dealing with the results, it was necessary to continue the action to the second cycle.In the second cycle, 81% of the students were active in the first meeting and 83.78% of the students were active in the second meeting, and 78.37%of the students got ≥65 in speaking test. It means that the minimum requirement percentage of the students who got ≥65 had been achieved in cycle II.Thus, teaching speaking by giving verbal and non-verbal reinforcement could improve the students’ active participation and their speaking achievement in two cycles.   Key Words: verbal and non-verbal reinforcement, speaking achievement, student’s participatio

    Abstract. Reading is one of language skills that should be learnt by students because every activity in class involves reading. In fact, students generally feel bored and unmotivated in learning English especially in reading skill because English is different from Indonesian so that the students have difficulty in understanding reading English text. They do not know the meaning of some words in the text. Therefore, the teacher’s role becomes important in the teaching and learning process especially in teaching reading. Therefore, appropriate media should be chosen to motivate their students not only to read the text but also comprehend what they read. One of the media that can be used and applied by the teacher is Composite Pictures. A Composite Picture is a large single picture which shows a scene in which a number of people can be seen doing several things. Thus, to know whether or not there was a significant effect of using Composite Pictures on reading comprehension achievement; Composite Pictures was used as media in teaching reading in this research.     THE EFFECT OF USING CROSSWORD PUZZLE ON VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EIGHTH YEAR STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 5 JEMBER

    Abstract : This Research was intended to know the significant effect of using Crossword puzzle on vocabulary achivement of the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 5 Jember. The research design was Pre -experimental research with Nonequivalent-Group Post-test Only Design. The students’ scores of Vocabulary Achievement were analyzed by applying t-test formula the result indicated that the value of t-test was 2.54, while the t-table with the significant level 5% and degree of freedom (Df) 72 was 1,67. The value of t-test was 2,54 and it was higher than 1.67 (2.54 >1.67). In conclusion, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected while the alternate hypothesis (H1) was accepted. In conclusion, there was a significant effect of using Crossword Puzzle on Vocabulary achievement of the students at SMP Negeri 5 Jember. Key Words : Crossword Puzzle, Vocabulary Achievemen

    Students’ Responses to Teacher’s Reinforcement: A Discourse Analysis

    Reinforcement is one of the important aspects in increasing students' motivation, to be more serious, and more focused during the teaching-learning process. This research is intended to know the kinds of reinforcement used by the teacher, how students respond to it, and how was their feeling about it. The design of this research is Discourse Analysis that focuses on the semiotic area. This research was conducted at one of the state junior high schools in East Java, Indonesia. The participant was chosen by using purposive sampling method and class 7F students were selected as the research participants. In conducting the research, the researcher did classroom observation, took video recording, and did an interview with the students to know exactly the meaning of students' responses. The finding showed that the teacher used verbal and non-verbal reinforcement. Mostly, the teacher praised the students for what they have done and students mostly showed their response using facial expression and sometimes using body gesture. Regarding their feeling, they said that reinforcement from the teacher makes them feel appreciated, motivated and happy during the teaching-learning process, which means that the role of reinforcement is very important

    Abstract: Reading is an activity that can be considered as a crucial aspect of one’s language ability because this skill deals with information and communication. Almost all of the teaching learning processes involve reading in the activities. Though reading is regarded as an important skill, many students experience difficulties in comprehending the reading text. Those difficulties appeared because the students had low motivation and posses limited vocabulary. The use of authentic materials in teaching reading is appropriate since they relate directly to the real world. This research applied a quasi-experimental with non-equivalent pretest-posttest design. The research was conducted at MA Islamiyah Syafi’iyah Sumberanyar-Paiton with the tenth graders as the research population. Two classes were chosen as the research sample by using lottery. Class XB which had 28 students was the experimental class and class XC which consisted of 20 students as the control class. The students’ pretest and posttest scores from experimental class and control class were calculated by using ANCOVA (Analysis of Covariance) through SPSS (Statistical Packages for Social Science). The result of ANCOVA showed that the use of authentic materials had a significant effect on the students reading comprehension achievement.     Analisis perbandingan abnormal return dan trading volume activity sebelum dan sesudah peristiwa pemilu 17 April 2019 (Studi kasus pada saham perusahaan-perusahaan yang masuk di Jakarta Islamic Index)

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perbedaan signifikan Abnormal Return (AR) dan Trading Volume Activity (TVA) sebelum dan sesudah pemilu 17 April 2019 pada saham perusahaan-perusahaan yang masuk di Jakarta Islamic Index (JII). Secara umum pemilu presiden akan berdampak pada kinerja pemerintahan selanjutnya yang akan memunculkan kebijakan-kebijakan baru dalam sektor ekonomi. Hal ini akan berimbas pada proyeksi analisis investor dalam mempengarui harga-harga yang ada di pasar modal. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah studi peristiwa (event study) . Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah data sekunder yang berupa data harian harga saham, data harian volume perdagangan, dan data harian saham yang beredar selama periode 5 hari sebelum dan 5 hari sesudah peristiwa. Sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitan ini adalah 30 saham anggota indeks JII yang dipilih dengan metode purposive sampling. Pengujian penelitian ini menggunakan uji beda dua rata-rata (paired samples t-test). Berdasarkan hasil analisis menunjukan pengujian Abnormal Return (AR) dan Trading Volume Activity (TVA) menghasilkan kesimpulan bahwa tidak terdapat perbedaan signifikan Abnormal Return (AR) dan Trading Volume Activity (TVA) 5 hari sebelum dan 5 hari sesudah peritiwa pemilu 17 April 2019 pada saham perusahaan-perusahaan yang masuk di Jakarta Islamic Index (JII). Mudahnya akses para investor dalam memperoleh informasi didukung dengan adanya hasil hitung cepat saat pemilihan umum yang dilakukan beberapa lembaga survei yang ada di Indonesia, sehingga para pelaku pasar modal dapat memprediksi peristiwa yang akan terjadi dan lebih memilih untuk wait and see yaitu menunggu hasil keputusan KPU untuk melihat pergerakan di bursa saham
