    Geometric picture of quantum discord for two-qubit quantum states

    Among various definitions of quantum correlations, quantum discord has attracted considerable attention. To find analytical expression of quantum discord is an intractable task. Exact results are known only for very special states, namely, two-qubit X-shaped states. We present in this paper a geometric viewpoint, from which two-qubit quantum discord can be described clearly. The known results about X state discord are restated in the directly perceivable geometric language. As a consequence, the dynamics of classical correlations and quantum discord for an X state in the presence of decoherence is endowed with geometric interpretation. More importantly, we extend the geometric method to the case of more general states, for which numerical as well as analytica results about quantum discord have not been found yet. Based on the support of numerical computations, some conjectures are proposed to help us establish geometric picture. We find that the geometric picture for these states has intimate relationship with that for X states. Thereby in some cases analytical expressions of classical correlations and quantum discord can be obtained.Comment: 9 figure

    Dissipative dynamics of quantum discord under quantum chaotic environment

    We investigate the dissipative dynamics of quantum discord in a decoherence model with two initially entangled qubits in addition to a quantum kicked top. The two qubits are uncoupled during the period of our study and one of them interacts with the quantum kicked top. We find that the long time behavior of quantum discord could be well described by the fidelity decay of the quantum kicked top; for short time behavior, however, the phase of the amplitude of the fidelity decay is necessary to provide more specific information about the system. We have made comparison between the quantum kicked top and multi-mode oscillator system in describing environment, and also compared the dynamics of the entanglement with that of quantum discord.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, and Accepted by Europhysics Letter

    A new criteria for zero quantum discord

    We propose a new criterion to judge zero quantum discord for arbitrary bipartite states. A bipartite quantum state has zero quantum discord if and only if all blocks of its density matrix are normal matrices and commute with each other. Given a bipartite state with zero quantum discord, how to find out the set of local projectors, which do not disturb the whole state after being imposed on one subsystem, is also presented. A class of two-qubit X-state is used to test the criterion, and an experimental scheme is proposed to realize it. Consequently, we prove that the positive operator-valued measurement can not extinguish the quantum correlation of a bipartite state with nonzero quantum discord.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

    A Search for Binary Active Galactic Nuclei: Double-Peaked [OIII] AGN in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    We present AGN from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) having double-peaked profiles of [OIII] 5007,4959 and other narrow emission-lines, motivated by the prospect of finding candidate binary AGN. These objects were identified by means of a visual examination of 21,592 quasars at z < 0.7 in SDSS Data Release 7 (DR7). Of the spectra with adequate signal-to-noise, 148 spectra exhibit a double-peaked [OIII] profile. Of these, 86 are Type 1 AGN and 62 are Type 2 AGN. Only two give the appearance of possibly being optically resolved double AGN in the SDSS images, but many show close companions or signs of recent interaction. Radio-detected quasars are three times more likely to exhibit a double-peaked [OIII] profile than quasars with no detected radio flux, suggesting a role for jet interactions in producing the double-peaked profiles. Of the 66 broad line (Type 1) AGN that are undetected in the FIRST survey, 0.9% show double peaked [OIII] profiles. We discuss statistical tests of the nature of the double-peaked objects. Further study is needed to determine which of them are binary AGN rather than disturbed narrow line regions, and how many additional binaries may remain undetected because of insufficient line-of-sight velocity splitting. Previous studies indicate that 0.1% of SDSS quasars are spatially resolved binaries, with typical spacings of ~10 to 100 kpc. If a substantial fraction of the double-peaked objects are indeed binaries, then our results imply that binaries occur more frequently at smaller separations (< 10 kpc). This suggests that simultaneous fueling of both black holes is more common as the binary orbit decays through these spacings.Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX. Major revisions.     LBQS 0103-2753: A Binary Quasar in a Major Merger

    We present HST and UKIRT spectra and images of the 2 kpc binary quasar LBQS 0103-2753 (z=0.858). The HST images (V- and I-band) show tidal features demonstrating that this system is a major galaxy merger in progress. A two-color composite image brings out knots of star formation along the tidal arc and elsewhere. The infrared spectrum shows that both objects are at the same redshift, and that the discrepant redshift of C IV in component A is a consequence of the BAL absorption in the spectrum of this component. LBQS 0103-2753 is one of the most closely spaced binary QSOs known, and is one of relatively few dual AGN showing confirmed broad emission lines from both components. While statistical studies of binary QSOs suggest that simultaneous fueling of both black holes during a merger may be relatively rare, LBQS 0103-2753 demonstrates that such fueling can occur at high luminosity at a late stage in the merger at nuclear spacing of only a few kpc, without severe obscuration of the nuclei.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures.     Dietary glycemic index and retinal microvasculature in adults: a cross-sectional study

    [EN] Objective: To analyze the relationship between dietary glycemic index (GI) and retinal microvasculature in adults. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 300 subjects from the EVIDENT II study. Dietary GI was calculated using a validated, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Retinal photographs were digitized, temporal vessels were measured in an area 0.5–1 disc diameter from the optic disc and arteriolar-venular index (AVI) was estimated with semi-automated software. Results: AVI showed a significant difference between the tertiles of GI, after adjusting for potential confounders. The lowest AVI values were observed among subjects in the highest tertile of GI, whereas the greatest were found among those in the lowest tertile (estimated marginal mean of 0.738 vs. 0.768, p = 0.014). Conclusions: In adults, high dietary GI implies lowering AVI values regardless of age, gender and other confounding variables. Trial registration: Clinical Trials.gov Identifier: NCT02016014.     Matrix metalloproteinase-10 effectively reduces infarct size in experimental stroke by enhancing fibrinolysis via a thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor-mediated mechanism

    BACKGROUND: The fibrinolytic and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) systems cooperate in thrombus dissolution and extracellular matrix proteolysis. The plasminogen/plasmin system activates MMPs, and some MMPs have been involved in the dissolution of fibrin by targeting fibrin(ogen) directly or by collaborating with plasmin. MMP-10 has been implicated in inflammatory/thrombotic processes and vascular integrity, but whether MMP-10 could have a profibrinolytic effect and represent a promising thrombolytic agent is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effect of MMP-10 on fibrinolysis was studied in vitro and in vivo, in MMP-10-null mice (Mmp10(-/-)), with the use of 2 different murine models of arterial thrombosis: laser-induced carotid injury and ischemic stroke. In vitro, we showed that MMP-10 was capable of enhancing tissue plasminogen activator-induced fibrinolysis via a thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor inactivation-mediated mechanism. In vivo, delayed fibrinolysis observed after photochemical carotid injury in Mmp10(-/-) mice was reversed by active recombinant human MMP-10. In a thrombin-induced stroke model, the reperfusion and the infarct size in sham or tissue plasminogen activator-treated animals were severely impaired in Mmp10(-/-) mice. In this model, administration of active MMP-10 to wild-type animals significantly reduced blood reperfusion time and infarct size to the same extent as tissue plasminogen activator and was associated with shorter bleeding time and no intracranial hemorrhage. This effect was not observed in thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor-deficient mice, suggesting thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor inactivation as one of the mechanisms involved in the MMP-10 profibrinolytic effect. CONCLUSIONS: A novel profibrinolytic role for MMP-10 in experimental ischemic stroke is described, opening new pathways for innovative fibrinolytic strategies in arterial thrombosis

    The adjusted International Prognostic Index and beta-2-microglobulin predict the outcome after autologous stem cell transplantation in relapsing/refractory peripheral T-cell lymphoma

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Preliminary data on the use of autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) as a salvage therapy for peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) indicate that the results are similar to those obtained in aggressive B-cell lymphomas. The aim of our study was to analyze outcomes of a large series of patients with PTCL with a prolonged follow-up who received ASCT as salvage therapy. DESIGN AND METHODS: Between 1990 and 2004, 123 patients in this situation were registered in the GELTAMO database. The median age at transplantation was 43.5 years; in 91% of patients the disease was chemosensitive. RESULTS: Seventy-three percent of the patients achieved complete remission, 11% partial remission and the procedure failed in 16%. At a median follow-up of 61 months, the 5-year overall and progression-free survival rates were 45% and 34%, respectively. The presence of more than one factor of the adjusted International Prognostic Index (a-IPI) and a high beta2-microglobulin at transplantation were identified as adverse prognostic factors for both overall and progression-free survival and allowed the population to be stratified into three distinct risk groups. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSIONS: Our data show that approximately one third of patients with PTCL in the salvage setting may enjoy prolonged survival following ASCT, provided they are transplanted in a chemosensitive disease state. The a-IPI and beta2-microglobulin level predict the outcome after ASCT in relapsing/refractory PTCL

    The AGNIFS survey: spatially resolved observations of hot molecular and ionised outflows in nearby active galaxies

    We present the hot molecular and warm ionised gas kinematics for 33 nearby (0.001≲z≲0.0560.001\lesssim z\lesssim0.056) X-ray selected active galaxies using the H22.1218μ_2 2.1218 \mum and Brγ\gamma emission lines observed in the K-band with the Gemini Near-Infrared Field Spectrograph (NIFS). The observations cover the inner 0.04−-2 kpc of each AGN at spatial resolutions of 4−-250 pc with a velocity resolution of σinst≈\sigma_{\rm inst}\approx20 kms−1{\rm km s^{-1}}. We find that 31 objects (94 per cent) present a kinematically disturbed region (KDR) seen in ionised gas, while such regions are observed in hot molecular gas for 25 galaxies (76 per cent). We interpret the KDR as being due to outflows with masses of 102−^2-107^7 M⊙_\odot and 100−^0-104^4 M⊙_\odot for the ionised and hot molecular gas, respectively. The ranges of mass-outflow rates (M˙out\dot{M}_{\rm out}) and kinetic power (E˙K\dot{E}_{\rm K}) of the outflows are 10−3−^{-3}-101^{1} M⊙_\odotyr−1^{-1} and ∼\sim1037^{37}−-1043^{43} erg s−1^{-1} for the ionised gas outflows, and 10−5^{-5}−-10−2^{-2} M⊙_\odot yr−1^{-1} and 1035^{35}−-1039^{39} erg s−1^{-1} for the hot molecular gas outflows. The median coupling efficiency in our sample is E˙K/Lbol≈1.8×10−3\dot{E}_{K}/L_{\rm bol}\approx1.8\times10^{-3} and the estimated momentum fluxes of the outflows suggest they are produced by radiation-pressure in low-density environment, with possible contribution from shocks.Comment: 37 pages, published in MNRAS - A few typos in the text and in the label of Fg 1 were corrected in this versio
