    Coulomb correlations of a few body system of spatially separated charges

    A Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov study of a few body system of spatially separated charge carriers was carried out. Using these variational states, we compute an approximation to the correlation energy of a finite system of electron-hole pairs. This energy is shown as a function of the Coulomb coupling and the interplane distance. We discuss how the correlation energy can be used to theoretically determine the formation of indirect excitons in semiconductors which is relevant for collective phenomena such as Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC).Comment: Conference EDISON16 (2009), 4 page

    Preparation of Dipteran Larvae for Scanning Electron Microscopy with Special Reference to Myiasigen Dipteran Species

    Although controversy exists concerning the role of chemical fixatives in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies of Dipteran larvae, we have observed that filtered 10% formaldehyde solution gives excellent results as a preservative. After immersing in vivo in formaldehyde, the larvae material is preserved for prolonged periods (up to 8 months), before examination with SEM. As a fixative, formaldehyde preserves the structure of the larval cuticle and produces no visible artifacts. Moreover, postfixation is not necessary. Due to pecularities of the way of life of Wohlfahrtia magnifica (principally the accumulations of necrotic tissue, purulent particles, and other types of substances that often adhere to the numerous spines of larvae), this species must be cleaned before examination by SEM. Manual cleaning with alternating bidistilled water and 0.9% saline solution proved to be a rapid, easy and inexpensive method that gave good results. Both lyophilization drying and critical point drying were used before sputtering the material. While lyophilization drying proved to be the most effective method for instars II and III, critical point drying was the best technique for study of specimens belonging to instar I. The optimum time for drying and conditions for lyophilization and sputter-coating with gold were determined experimentally.     The effect of calcitriol, paricalcitol, and a calcimimetic on extraosseous calcifications in uremic rats

    Vitamin D derivatives and calcimimetics are used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic renal failure. We investigated the effect of calcitriol, paricalcitol, and the calcimimetic AMG 641 on soft-tissue calcification in uremic rats with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Control and uremic rats were treated with vehicle, calcitriol, paricalcitol, AMG 641, or a combination of AMG 641 plus calcitriol or paricalcitol. Parathyroid hormone levels were reduced by all treatments but were better controlled by the combination of paricalcitol and AMG 641. The calcimimetic alone did not induce extraosseous calcification but co-administration of AMG 641 reduced soft-tissue calcification and aortic mineralization in both calcitriol- and paricalcitol-treated rats. Survival was significantly reduced in rats treated with calcitriol and this mortality was attenuated by co-treatment with AMG 641. Our study shows that extraskeletal calcification was present in animals treated with calcitriol and paricalcitol but not with AMG 641. When used in combination with paricalcitol, AMG 641 provided excellent control of secondary hyperparathyroidism and prevented mortality associated with the use of vitamin D derivatives without causing tissue calcification

    Brenneria quercina and Serratia spp. isolated from Spanish oak trees: molecular characterization and PCR development

    Brenneria quercina has been reported as one of the causal agents of oak decline in Spain. To investigate the bacterial variability of this pathogen from different Spanish oak forests, a collection of 38 bacterial isolates from seven geographic locations and from different oak species was analysed by sequencing 16S rDNA and rep-PCR fingerprinting. All Spanish isolates of B. quercina were grouped by rep-PCR into a homogenous cluster that differed significantly from B. quercina reference strains from California. 16S rDNA analysis revealed that 34 out of 38 isolates were Brenneria . However, four isolates belonged to the genus Serratia , suggesting that this bacterium could cause cankers in oak trees. The information obtained by rep-PCR fingerprint analysis was used to develop PCR primers for the sensitive and specific detection of B. quercina from infected plant tissues. Pathogenicity tests performed with Brenneria and Serratia isolates showed that both were able to grow and cause cankers in oak trees

    Effect of Protein Restriction During Mid-to Late Gestation of Beef Cows on Female Offspring Fertility, Lactation Performance and Calves Development

    Cow calf operation in Argentina are managed under extensive grazing condition and the quality of forages is often poor during second half of gestation. Protein restriction in bovine gestation affects production traits in progeny. The present work investigated the effects of two levels of crude protein (CP) provided to mature dams during late gestation on subsequent heifer’s growth postweaning, reproductive performance, milk production and grand offspring evolution. At 121 d prepartum, 68 multiparous Angus cows were randomly assigned to low protein (LP, 6% CP) or high protein (HP, 12% CP) at 12 pens per treatment group. Following calving, all cow/calf pairs were housed together until weaning, then female progeny were removed and maintained on pasture as a single group. At puberty (P = 0.01) and pregnancy determination (P = 0.05) the HP heifers were heavier than LP heifers. The LM area was greater at 20 mo of age in HP compared to LP heifers (P = 0.01) and the HP heifers had greater 12th rib fat thickness at 30 and 35 mo of age (P = 0.02). Serum IGF-1 concentration was greater in HP heifers compared to LP heifers (P = 0.05). No dam nutrition effects were found on offspring age at puberty (P = 0.98), final pregnancy rate (P = 0.28) or milk yield (P = 0.76) but heifers born to LP dams had greater milk protein percentage (P = 0.04) and tended to produce increased milk fat percentage (P = 0.08) compared with HP heifers. The LP grand offspring grew faster from birth until weaning compared with HP grand offspring (P < 0.01) with reduced insulin concentrations (P = 0.03) and tended to have increased glucose concentrations than HP calves (P = 0.09). Protein supplementation during late gestation does not affect reproductive performance of the offspring heifers but did impact their BW evolution, milk quality and grand offspring performance.     A wot-based method for creating digital sentinel twins of iot devices

    The data produced by sensors of IoT devices are becoming keystones for organizations to conduct critical decision-making processes. However, delivering information to these processes in real-time represents two challenges for the organizations: the first one is achieving a constant dataflow from IoT to the cloud and the second one is enabling decision-making processes to retrieve data from dataflows in real-time. This paper presents a cloud-based Web of Things method for creating digital twins of IoT devices (named sentinels).The novelty of the proposed approach is that sentinels create an abstract window for decision-making processes to: (a) find data (e.g., properties, events, and data from sensors of IoT devices) or (b) invoke functions (e.g., actions and tasks) from physical devices (PD), as well as from virtual devices (VD). In this approach, the applications and services of decision-making processes deal with sentinels instead of managing complex details associated with the PDs, VDs, and cloud computing infrastructures. A prototype based on the proposed method was implemented to conduct a case study based on a blockchain system for verifying contract violation in sensors used in product transportation logistics. The evaluation showed the effectiveness of sentinels enabling organizations to attain data from IoT sensors and the dataflows used by decision-making processes to convert these data into useful information

    Proof of concept of a novel neck-situated wearable PPG system for continuous physiological monitoring

    Continuous overnight vital signs monitoring would be ideal for patients suffering from epilepsy, where life-threatening hypoxemias can occur during sleep. However, the existing physiological monitoring systems suffer from limitations in terms of usability factors and/or limited information of the signals being acquired. The body location of the monitoring system is a crucial consideration, seldom addressed by the wider community. This article presents a proof-of-concept, neck-worn photoplethysmography system, which was developed and tested to assess the feasibility of the neck as a monitoring site for longitudinal sensing of cardiac and respiratory responses during sleep. The novel system was compared against a gold-standard commercial multichannel cardiorespiratory polysomnography (PSG) system during oxygen desaturation cycles, to assess its ability to measure heart rate, respiratory rate (RR), and peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ) on 15 participants. The findings for heart rate showed a marginal mean error of 0.47 beats/min with limits of agreement (LOA) at 95% confidence between −3.17 and 4 bpm. RR comparisons had an overall mean error of 0.43 breaths/min, with LOA at 95% confidence between −2.73 and 3.3 bpm. Lastly, the system accurately outputs SpO 2 with an overall root-mean-square error of 1.44% between 90 and 100% SpO 2 using a custom calibration method. Moreover, it was observed that the neck made it possible for the system to detect desaturation events on an average 12.6 s prior to the PSG system, which used a peripheral finger-based PPG system. Ultimately, this proof-of-concept study illustrates the viability of neck-based sensing for minimally invasive monitoring of cardiac and respiratory vitals during sleep
