El uso de Internet y su evolución acelerada en el tiempo no afecta exclusivamente a las empresas, sino que su ritmo viene marcado precisamente por los que se han de considerar nuevos productores de contenido en la Red. La Universidad no puede quedarse atrás en el uso de las TIC pero tampoco puede centrarse exclusivamente en plataformas de aprendizaje on-line de sofisticación elevada –OCW, Moodle, entre otros-, pero sin otorgar poder para modificar y generar contenidos a los usuarios. La Unidad Docente de Organización de Empresas del Departamento de Economía y Gestión Forestal de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Montes de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid propone el uso de plataformas Web 2.0 con el objeto de desarrollar competencias tradicionales y competencias 2.0. Estas plataformas tienen una gran acogida entre el alumnado, presentan utilidad tanto en el presente como en el futuro, y se puede utilizar como plataforma de Learning 2.0 de la Economía y Organización de Empresa
On the Use of Deep Feedforward Neural Networks for Automatic Language Identification
In this work, we present a comprehensive study on the use of deep neural networks (DNNs) for automatic language identification (LID). Motivated by the recent success of using DNNs in acoustic modeling for speech recognition, we adapt DNNs to the problem of identifying the language in a given utterance from its short-term acoustic features. We propose two different DNN- based approaches. In the first one, the DNN acts as an end-to-end LID classifier, receiving as input the speech features and providing as output the estimated probabilities of the target languages. In the second approach, the DNN is used to extract bottleneck features that are then used as inputs for a state-of-the-art i-vector system. Experiments are conducted in two different scenarios: the complete NIST Language Recognition Evaluation dataset 2009 (LRE’09) and a subset of the Voice of America (VOA) data from LRE’09, in which all languages have the same amount of training data. Results for both datasets demonstrate that the DNN-based systems significantly outperform a state-of-art i-vector system when dealing with short-duration utterances. Furthermore, the combination of the DNN-based and the classical i-vector system leads to additional performance improvements (up to 45% of relative improvement in both EER and Cavg on 3s and 10s conditions, respectively)
Understanding how off-stoichiometry promotes cation mixing in LiNiO
Although LiNiO is chemically similar to LiCoO and offers a nearly
identical theoretical capacity, LiNiO and related Co-free Ni-rich cathode
materials suffer from degradation during electrochemical cycling that has
prevented practical use in Li-ion batteries. The observed capacity decay of
LiNiO has been attributed to the formation of structural defects via Li/Ni
cation mixing that reduces cyclability and leads to poor capacity retention.
Herein, we investigate the kinetics and thermodynamics of Li/Ni mixing in ideal
LiNiO and off-stoichiometric LiNiO. We find that ideal
LiNiO is stable against cation mixing with similar characteristics as
LiCoO. Li/Ni mixing is promoted by extra Ni in the Li layers that cannot be
avoided in synthesis. Our study elucidates the crucial role of extra Ni atoms
on Li sites in the cation mixing mechanism, an insight that can inform the

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma with a T follicular-helper phenotype: a different entity? Results of the Spanish Real-T study
Peripheral T-cell lymphomaLimfoma perifèric de cèl·lules TLinfoma periférico de células TNodal peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) with a T follicular helper phenotype (PTCL-TFH) is a new type of PTCL. We aimed to define its clinical characteristics and prognosis compared to PTCL not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) and angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL). This retrospective observational study included 175 patients diagnosed with PTCL between 2008 and 2013 in 13 Spanish sites. Patient diagnosis was centrally reviewed, and patients were reclassified according to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2016 criteria: 21 patients as PTCL-NOS, 55 as AITL and 23 as PTCL-TFH. Median follow-up was 56.07 months (95% CI 38.7–73.4). Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were significantly higher in patients with PTCL-TFH than in those with PTCL-NOS and AITL (PFS, 24.6 months vs. 4.6 and 7.8 months, respectively, p = 0.002; OS, 52.6 months vs. 10.0 and 19.3 months, respectively, p < 0.001). Histological diagnosis maintained an independent influence on both PFS (hazard ratio [HR] 4.1 vs. PTCL-NOS, p = 0.008; HR 2.6 vs. AITL, p = 0.047) and OS (HR 5.7 vs. PTCL-NOS, p = 0.004; HR 2.6 vs. AITL, p = 0.096), regardless of the International Prognostic Index. These results suggest that PTCL-TFH could have more favourable features and prognosis than the other PTCL subtypes, although larger series are needed to corroborate these findings.This work was supported by Takeda Farmacéutica España, S.A. Comparison of knowledge, attitudes and hand hygiene behavioral intention in medical and nursing students.
Introduction: Hand hygiene is crucial to prevent cross infection. Healthcare students are in a prime position to learn hand hygiene skills. The aim of this study was to analyze hand hygiene behavioral intentions of healthcare students before and after contact with the patient and to compare the knowledge of and attitude towards hand hygiene between medical and nursing students. Methods: In a descriptive survey research design, convenience selection of a sample of medical students (n=657) and nursing students (n=303) was done from modules taught by the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health in both Medicine and Nursing undergraduate degrees in four Spanish universities. The hand hygiene Questionnaire, a validated instrument to evaluate behavior, knowledge, and attitudes, was used. Results: A significantly lower percentage of students reported always or almost always carrying out hand hygiene before contact with the patient or invasive procedures in comparison to the percentage complying after contact with secretions or with the patient. Although hand hygiene knowledge appears acceptable, its importance is not sufficiently valued.Conclusions: There are deficiencies in behavioral intention, knowledge, and attitudes related to hand hygiene in medical and nursing students. Acute neuromuscular and perceptual responses to blood flow restriction exercise in adults with severe haemophilia:A pilot study
Introduction: No previous studies have implemented a standard blood flow restriction (BFR) training session in people with severe haemophilia (PwH), where this type of training has been contraindicated.Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tolerability, adverse events, and neuromuscular and perceptual responses to an acute session of low load (LL) knee extensions with BFR in PwH under prophylaxis.Methods: Eight PwH performed one LL-BFR session with 40% arterial occlusion pressure (AOP). Perceptual responses and adverse effects were assessed, together with high-density surface electromyography of vastusmedialis (VM) and lateralis (VL).Results: Significant normalized root mean square differences were found within each set, but not between sets. Spatial distribution (centroid displacement (p > .05), modified entropy (VM, set two, cycles three and five, p = .032) and coefficient of variation (VM, set two, cycles four and five lower than cycle three (p = .049; p = .036)) showed changes within each set.Median frequency showed a slight increase during cycle four of set four (p = .030). Rate of perceived exertion slightly increased with each set while tolerability slightly decreased in the last set and fear of training with BFR generally decreased after the session.Conclusions: In PwH, a LL-BFR session at 40% AOP is safe and feasible. Our results suggest that potential muscle impairments may blunt neuromuscular adaptations induced by BFR
Synergy of DNA intercalation and catalytic activity of a copper complex towards improved polymerase inhibition and cancer cell cytotoxicity
Improving the binding of metal complexes to DNA to boost cancer cell cytotoxicity requires fine tuning of their structural and chemical properties. Copper has been used as a metal center in compounds containing intercalating ligands due to its ability to catalytically generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl radicals (OH˙). We envision the synergy of DNA binding and ROS generation in proximity to target DNA as a powerful chemotherapy treatment. Here, we explore the use of [Cu(2CP-Bz-SMe)]2+(2CP-Bz-SMe = 1,3-bis(1,10-phenanthrolin-2-yloxy)-N-(4-(methylthio)benzylidene)propan-2-amine) for this purpose by characterizing its cytotoxicity, DNA binding, and ability to affect DNA replication through the polymerase chain reaction - PCR and nuclease assays. We determined the binding (Kb) and Stern-Volmer constants (KSV) for complex-DNA association of 5.8 ± 0.14 × 104and 1.64 (±0.08), respectively, through absorption titration and competitive fluorescence experiments. These values were superior to those of other Cu-complex intercalators. We hypothesize that the distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry of [Cu(2CP-Bz-SMe)]2+allows the phenanthroline fragments to be better accommodated into the DNA double helix. Moreover, the aromaticity of these fragments increases the local hydrophobicity thus increasing the affinity for the hydrophobic domains of DNA. Nuclease assays in the presence of common reducing agents ascorbic acid, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, and glutathione showed the effective degradation of DNA due to thein situgeneration of OH˙. The [Cu(2CP-Bz-SMe)]2+complex showed cytotoxicity against the following human cancer cells lines A549, MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and MG-63 with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 4.62 ± 0.48, 5.20 ± 0.76, 5.70 ± 0.42 and 2.88 ± 0.66 μM, respectively. These low values of IC50, which are promising if compared to that of cisplatin, are ascribed to the synergistic effect of ROS generation with the intercalation ability into the DNA minor grooves and blocking DNA replication. Outcomes of abdominal wall reconstruction in patients with the combination of complex midline and lateral incisional hernias.
Background
The best treatment for the combined defects of midline and lateral incisional hernia is not known. The aim of our multicenter study was to evaluate the operative and patient-reported outcomes using a modified posterior component separation in patients who present with the combination of midline and lateral incisional hernia.
Methods
We identified patients from a prospective, multicenter database who underwent operative repairs of a midline and lateral incisional hernia at 4 centers with minimum 2-year follow-up. Hernias were divided into a main hernia based on the larger size and associated abdominal wall hernias. Outcomes reported were short- and long-term complications, including recurrence, pain, and bulging. Quality of life was assessed with the European Registry for Abdominal Wall Hernias Quality of Life score.
Results
Fifty-eight patients were identified. Almost 70% of patients presented with a midline defect as the main incisional hernia. The operative technique was a transversus abdominis release in 26 patients (45%), a modification of transversus abdominis release 27 (47%), a reverse transversus abdominis release in 3 (5%), and a primary, lateral retromuscular preperitoneal approach in 2 (3%). Surgical site occurrences occurred in 22 patients (38%), with only 8 patients (14%) requiring procedural intervention. During a mean follow-up of 30.1 ± 14.4 months, 2 (3%) cases of recurrence were diagnosed and required reoperation. There were also 4 (7%) patients with asymptomatic but visible bulging. The European Registry for Abdominal Wall Hernias Quality of Life score showed a statistically significant decrease in the 3 domains (pain, restriction, and cosmetic) in the postoperative score compared with the preoperative score.
Conclusion
The different techniques of posterior component separation in the treatment of combined midline and lateral incisional hernia show acceptable results, despite the associated high complexity. Patient-reported outcomes after measurement of the European Registry for Abdominal Wall Hernias Quality of Life score demonstrated a clinically important improvement in quality of life and pain.post-print2.323 K
Isatuximab in combination with lenalidomide and dexamethasone in patients with high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma: Updated safety run-in results from the randomized phase 3 ithaca study
Background: Results from a randomized, Phase 3 study by the Spanish Myeloma Group (PETHEMA/GEM) previously showed that treatment with lenalidomide plus dexamethasone (Rd) may delay progression to active disease in patients (pts) with high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM), compared with observation. To further improve outcomes, addition of the anti-CD38 antibody isatuximab (Isa) to lenalidomide and dexamethasone (Isa-Rd) for the treatment of pts with high-risk SMM is being evaluated in the ongoing, randomized, multi-center, Phase 3 ITHACA study (NCT04270409). Initial findings from the safety run-in analysis of this trial have shown a manageable safety profile and encouraging, preliminary anti-myeloma activity. We now report updated safety and efficacy results from the safety run-in part of ITHACA at a median follow-up of 19.4 months. Methods: Pts were included in the study if they had been diagnosed within 5 years with SMM (per the International Myeloma Working Group [IMWG] criteria) and had high-risk SMM according to the Mayo '20-2-20' and/or updated PETHEMA model criteria. Pts who had received prior anti-myeloma treatment were not eligible. Enrolled pts received Isa 10 mg/kg IV on day (D) 1, 8, 15, and 22 in cycle (C) 1, D1 and D15 C2-12, D1 C13-36; plus R D1-21 (25 mg C1-9; 10 mg C10-24) and d weekly (40 mg, 20 mg for ≥75 yr-old pts C1-9; 20 mg C10-24). Cycle duration was 28 days. Safety evaluations included treatment-emergent AEs (TEAEs)/serious AEs and laboratory parameters, graded by NCI-CTCAE v5.0. Response was determined by IMWG criteria (2016). Mandatory imaging by MRI and/or low-dose whole-body CT/PET-CT, and assessments of minimal residual disease (MRD, by next-generation sequencing in pts with very good partial response [VGPR] or better), were performed at protocol-defined time points. The primary study objective for the safety run-in was to confirm the recommended dose of Isa in combination with Rd. Safety and efficacy of ribociclib plus letrozole in patients with HR+, HER2– advanced breast cancer: Results from the Spanish sub-population of the phase 3b CompLEEment-1 trial
Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in Spanish women. Ribociclib in combination with endocrine therapy (ET) has shown superiority in prolonging survival in patients with hormone receptor-positive (HR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) advanced breast cancer (ABC) vs. ET alone.Methods: CompLEEment-1 is a single-arm, open-label phase 3b trial evaluating ribociclib plus letrozole in a broad population of patients with HR+, HER2- ABC. The primary endpoints were safety and tolerability. Here we report data for Spanish patients enrolled in CompLEEment-1.Results: A total of 526 patients were evaluated (median follow-up: 26.97 months). Baseline characteristics showed a diverse population with a median age of 54 years. At study entry, 56.5% of patients had visceral metastases and 8.7% had received prior chemotherapy for advanced disease. Rates of all-grade and Grade >= 3 adverse events (AEs) were 99.0% and 76.2%, respectively; 21.3% of patients experienced a serious AE, and 15.8% of AEs led to treatment discontinuation. AEs of special interest of neutropenia, increased alanine aminotransferase, increased aspartate aminotransferase and QTcF prolongation occurred in 77.8%, 14.8%, 11.4% and 4.0% of patients, respectively. Patients aged >70 years experienced increased rates of all-grade and Grade >= 3 neutropenia and anemia. Efficacy results were consistent with the global study.Conclusions: Results from Spanish patients enrolled in CompLEEment-1 are consistent with global data showing efficacy and a manageable safety profile for ribociclib plus letrozole treatment in patients with HR+, HER2-ABC, including populations of interest (NCT02941926).Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT0294192
