Moving forward in the Euro-Mediterranean research and innovation partnership : the experience of the MIRA project
Resonant Raman scattering off neutral quantum dots
Resonant inelastic (Raman) light scattering off neutral GaAs quantum dots
which contain a mean number, N=42, of electron-hole pairs is computed. We find
Raman amplitudes corresponding to strongly collective final states
(charge-density excitations) of similar magnitude as the amplitudes related to
weakly collective or single-particle excitations. As a function of the incident
laser frequency or the magnetic field, they are rapidly varying amplitudes. It
is argued that strong Raman peaks should come out in the spin-density channels,
not related to valence-band mixing effects in the intermediate states.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review
Radiative open charm decay of the Y(3940), Z(3930), X(4160) resonances
We determine the radiative decay amplitudes for decay into and , or and of some of the charmonium like
states classified as X,Y,Z resonances, plus some other hidden charm states
which are dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with
charm. The mass distributions as a function of the or
invariant mass show a peculiar behavior as a consequence of
the nature of these states. The experimental search of these
magnitudes can shed light on the nature of these states.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry Parameters in and
We have measured the weak decay asymmetry parameters (\aLC ) for two \LC\
decay modes. Our measurements are \aLC = -0.94^{+0.21+0.12}_{-0.06-0.06} for
the decay mode and \aLC = -0.45\pm 0.31 \pm
0.06 for the decay mode . By combining these
measurements with the previously measured decay rates, we have extracted the
parity-violating and parity-conserving amplitudes. These amplitudes are used to
test models of nonleptonic charmed baryon decay.Comment: 11 pages including the figures. Uses REVTEX and psfig macros. Figures

Measurement of the branching fraction for
We have studied the leptonic decay of the resonance into tau
pairs using the CLEO II detector. A clean sample of tau pair events is
identified via events containing two charged particles where exactly one of the
particles is an identified electron. We find . The result is consistent with
expectations from lepton universality.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, two Postscript figures available upon request, CLNS

Using the Resected Kidney for Transplantation After Nephrectomy for Nutcracker Syndrome
Nutcracker syndrome (NCS) is the clinical manifestation of unilateral renal venous hypertension. It develops secondary to the nutcracker phenomenon caused by compression of the left renal vein between the superior mesenteric artery and the aorta. We present the case of a 43-year-old female with a history of left flank pain, pelvic congestion, and hematuria secondary to NCS. The patient frequently required high-dose non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications with minimal relief. She initiated a kidney donor evaluation after electing to undergo a nephrectomy for the possible long-term resolution of NCS symptoms. If diagnosed early, NCS does not generate pathology within the kidney. This finding allows an individual with medically refractory NCS to avoid the morbidity of a complex surgical procedure by instead donating their kidney. Attention to this treatment modality could provide individuals with NCS resolution of symptoms while providing someone with end-stage renal disease with a life-saving organ
Observation of the Charmed Baryon Decays to , , and
We have observed two new decay modes of the charmed baryon into
and using data collected with the
CLEO II detector. We also present the first measurement of the branching
fraction for the previously observed decay mode . The branching fractions for these three modes relative to
are measured to be , , and , respectively.Comment: 12 page uuencoded postscript file, postscript file also available

Cerro Prieto cold water injection: effects on nearby production wells
The liquid-dominated Cerro Prieto geothermal field of northern Baja California, Mexico has been under commercial exploitation since 1973. During the early years of operation, all waste brines were sent to an evaporation pond built west of the production area. In 1989, cooled pond brines began to be successfully injected into the reservoir along the western boundary of the geothermal system. The injection rate varied over the years, and is at present about 20% of the total fluid extracted. As expected under the continental desert conditions prevailing in the area, the temperature and salinity of the pond brines change with the seasons, being higher during the summer and lower during the winter. The chemistry of pond brines is also affected by precipitation of silica, oxidation of H{sub 2}S and reaction with airborne clays. Several production wells in the western part of the field (CP-I area) showed beneficial effects from injection. The chemical (chloride, isotopic) and physical (enthalpy, flow rate) changes observed in producers close to the injectors are reviewed. Some wells showed steam flow increases, in others steam flow decline rates flattened. Because of their higher density, injected brines migrated downward in the reservoir and showed up in deep wells
