    Effect of oral infection with Kashmir bee virus and Israeli acute paralysis virus on bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) reproductive success

    Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV) together with Acute bee paralysis virus (ABPV) and Kashmir bee virus (KBV) constitute a complex of closely related dicistroviruses. They are infamous for their high mortality after injection in honeybees. These viruses have also been reported in non-Apis hymenopteran pollinators such as bumblebees, which got infected with IAPV when placed in the same greenhouse with IAPV infected honeybee hives. Here we orally infected Bombus terrestris workers with different doses of either IAPV or KBV viral particles. The success of the infection was established by analysis of the bumblebees after the impact studies: 50 days after infection. Doses of 0.5 x 10(7) and 1 x 10(7) virus particles per bee were infectious over this period, for IAPV and KBV respectively, while a dose of 0.5 x 10(6) IAPV particles per bee was not infectious. The impact of virus infection was studied in micro-colonies consisting of 5 bumblebees, one of which becomes a pseudo-queen which proceeds to lay unfertilized (drone) eggs. The impact parameters studied were: the establishment of a laying pseudo-queen, the timing of egg-laying, the number of drones produced, the weight of these drones and worker mortality. In this setup KBV infection resulted in a significant slower colony startup and offspring production, while only the latter can be reported for IAPV. Neither virus increased worker mortality, at the oral doses used. We recommend further studies on how these viruses transmit between different pollinator species. It is also vital to understand how viral prevalence can affect wild bee populations because disturbance of the natural host-virus association may deteriorate the already critically endangered status of many bumblebee species

Such scenario demands maximum mobility and rapid information retrieval that points to a mobile application. The paper presents an application developed for local and remote use, called InHand, that is context-aware, presenting information related to the current user context and provides location-aware support through the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS). The location system keeps track of a client ’s location, schedules client visits for a given day, help user navigate through a map using real-time position acquisition, and gather the pathway followed by a user on a given day. The application has two channels: server and mobile client. The mobile client can synchronize data with the server, and relies on a local database to minimize wireless traffic to a minimum. We use Remote Data Access and Web Services to access remote data in a convenient way. Although the application is designed with book selling in mind, the concept is perfectly extendable to other fields of application

    Study of the interacting system NGC 6845

    We present optical spectroscopy, B, V, R and I CCD photometry and VLA neutral hydrogen observations of the interacting quartet NGC 6845, also know as Klemola 30. NGC 6845 A, the dominant component, sports a broad and bright tidal bridge and a faint tidal tail, which bifurcate. The tidal bridge has a (B-I) color bluer than that of NGC 6845 A inner disk. Five strong condensations, identified as HII regions brighter than the brightest in our Galaxy, are found along the tidal bridge, with the two most luminous located at the bridge tip. Two giant HII regions, comparable to 30 Dor, are located where the tidal bridge and the tidal tail joint the disk of NGC 6845 A. Since the age of the HII regions are 3-8 Myr, star formation has been occurring along the tidal bridge and the tidal arm well after they had begun to be torn apart (>= 100 Myr). Satoh model fitting to the rotation curve of the A component reveals a kinematical mass of 4.4(+-1.2)E11 M_sun, inside the central 12 kpc (H_0=75 km/s/Mpc). The HI emission shows two components, a more massive one that belongs to NGC 6845 A, and a second one associated to NGC 6845 B. We do not detect gas associated to galaxies C and D. The total amount of HI is 1.4E10 M_sun, five time the HI content of the Milky Way. The HI kinematics indicates an amount of dark matter associated to the A component two times higher than the mass inside its central 12 kpc. The group kinematics indicates an M/L ~ 43(+-2) or M/L ~ 66(+-2) (solar units), according to two different prescriptions for the internal absorption correction. In spite of this difference, both values furnish similar group mass (~1E13 M_sun). Although preliminary results on N-Body simulations indicate that either B or C might well create a tidal feature like the bridge of the A component, the collision with B appears to be more favourable.Comment: 24 pages, 11 JPEG figures, uses aastex.cls and natbib.sty (included).     Background: Oral clefts are one of the most common birth defects with significant medical, psychosocial, and economic ramifications. Oral clefts have a complex etiology with genetic and environmental risk factors. There are suggestive results for decreased risks of cleft occurrence and recurrence with folic acid supplements taken at preconception and during pregnancy with a stronger evidence for higher than lower doses in preventing recurrence. Yet previous studies have suffered from considerable design limitations particularly non-randomization into treatment. There is also well-documented effectiveness for folic acid in preventing neural tube defect occurrence at 0.4 mg and recurrence with 4 mg. Given the substantial burden of clefting on the individual and the family and the supportive data for the effectiveness of folic acid supplementation as well as its low cost, a randomized clinical trial of the effectiveness of high versus low dose folic acid for prevention of cleft recurrence is warranted. Methods/design: This study will assess the effect of 4 mg and 0.4 mg doses of folic acid, taken on a daily basis during preconception and up to 3 months of pregnancy by women who are at risk of having a child with nonsyndromic cleft lip with/without palate (NSCL/P), on the recurrence of NSCL/P. The total sample will include about 6,000 women (that either have NSCL/P or that have at least one child with NSCL/P) randomly assigned to the 4 mg and the 0.4 mg folic acid study groups. The study will also compare the recurrence rates of NSCL/P in the total sample of subjects, as well as the two study groups (4mg, 0.4 mg) to that of a historical control group. The study has been approved by IRBs (ethics committees) of all involved sites. Results will be disseminated through publications and presentations at scientific meetings. Discussion: The costs related to oral clefts are high, including long term psychological and socio-economic effects. This study provides an opportunity for huge savings in not only money but the overall quality of life. This may help establish more specific clinical guidelines for oral cleft prevention so that the intervention can be better tailored for at-risk women

    Common but differentiated leadership: strategies and challenges for carbon neutrality by 2050 across industrialized economies

    Given their historic emissions and economic capability, we analyze a leadership role for representative industrialized regions (EU, US, Japan, and Australia) in the global climate mitigation effort. Using the global integrated assessment model REMIND, we systematically compare region-specific mitigation strategies and challenges of reaching domestic net-zero carbon emissions in 2050. Embarking from different emission profiles and trends, we find that all of the regions have technological options and mitigation strategies to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Regional characteristics are mostly related to different land availability, population density and population trends: While Japan is resource limited with respect to onshore wind and solar power and has constrained options for carbon dioxide removal (CDR), their declining population significantly decreases future energy demand. In contrast, Australia and the US benefit from abundant renewable resources, but face challenges to curb industry and transport emissions given increasing populations and high per-capita energy use. In the EU, lack of social acceptance or EU-wide cooperation might endanger the ongoing transition to a renewable-based power system. CDR technologies are necessary for all regions, as residual emissions cannot be fully avoided by 2050. For Australia and the US, in particular, CDR could reduce the required transition pace, depth and costs. At the same time, this creates the risk of a carbon lock-in, if decarbonization ambition is scaled down in anticipation of CDR technologies that fail to deliver. Our results suggest that industrialized economies can benefit from cooperation based on common themes and complementary strengths.     First evidence of coherent K+K^{+} meson production in neutrino-nucleus scattering

    Neutrino-induced charged-current coherent kaon production, ΜΌA→Ό−K+A\nu_{\mu}A\rightarrow\mu^{-}K^{+}A, is a rare, inelastic electroweak process that brings a K+K^+ on shell and leaves the target nucleus intact in its ground state. This process is significantly lower in rate than neutrino-induced charged-current coherent pion production, because of Cabibbo suppression and a kinematic suppression due to the larger kaon mass. We search for such events in the scintillator tracker of MINERvA by observing the final state K+K^+, Ό−\mu^- and no other detector activity, and by using the kinematics of the final state particles to reconstruct the small momentum transfer to the nucleus, which is a model-independent characteristic of coherent scattering. We find the first experimental evidence for the process at 3σ3\sigma significance.Comment: added ancillary file with information about the six kaon candidate
