Evidence of spontaneous spin polarized transport in magnetic nanowires

The exploitation of the spin in charge-based systems is opening revolutionary opportunities for device architecture. Surprisingly, room temperature electrical transport through magnetic nanowires is still an unresolved issue. Here, we show that ferromagnetic (Co) suspended atom chains spontaneously display an electron transport of half a conductance quantum, as expected for a fully polarized conduction channel. Similar behavior has been observed for Pd (a quasi-magnetic 4d metal) and Pt (a non-magnetic 5d metal). These results suggest that the nanowire low dimensionality reinforces or induces magnetic behavior, lifting off spin degeneracy even at room temperature and zero external magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps fig

non-linear relationships in children 6-10 years

Background: Given the concern for health?related consequences of an elevated body mass index (BMI; obesity), the potential consequences of a low BMI in children are often overlooked. The purpose was to evaluate the relationship between the BMI across its entire spectrum and motor coordination (MC) in children 6?10 years. Methods: Height, weight, and MC (K?rperkoordinationstest f?r Kinder, KTK test battery) were measured in 1,912 boys and 1,826 girls of 6?10 years of age. BMI (kg/m2) was calculated. KTK scores for each of the four tests were also converted to a motor quotient (MQ). One?way ANOVA was used to test differences in the BMI, individual test items, and MQ among boys and girls within age groups. Sex?specific quadratic regressions of individual KTK items and the MQ on the BMI were calculated. Girls and boys were also classified into four weight status groups using International Obesity Task Force criteria: thin, normal, overweight, and obese. Differences in specific test items and MQ between weight status groups were evaluated by age group in each sex. Results: Thirty?one percent of the sample was overweight or obese, whereas 5% was thin. On average, normal weight children had the highest MQ in both sexes across the age range with few exceptions. Overweight/obese children had a lower MQ than normal weight and thin children. The quadratic regression lines generally presented an inverted parabolic relationship between the BMI and MC and suggested a decrease in MC with an increase in the BMI. Conclusion: In general, BMI shows a curvilinear, inverted parabolic relationship with MC in children 6?10 years.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo Rodriguesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Magnetoliposomes based on NixCu1-xFe2O4 or NiFe2-yAlyO4 nanocrystals for applications in magnetic separation and classification

    Get PDF
Ferrites are a broad class of compounds with general formula MFe2O4, where M stands for a divalent metallic cation. Among these, copper ferrite (CuFe2O4) presents a moderate saturation magnetization, while nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) holds a large one. Mixed ferrites with composition NixCu1-xFe2O4 were then prepared by coprecipitation method, in order to control the saturation magnetization with the fraction of Ni. Another possibility is the partial substitution of iron atoms with aluminium, as NiAl2O4 nanocrystals show very low saturation magnetization. Thus, ferrites of NiFe2-yAlyO4 composition were also obtained. XRD spectra of the obtained nanoparticles show the spinel-type crystalline phase. Solid magnetoliposomes of the prepared mixed ferrites were obtained, and their bilayer structure was proven by the use lipophilic fluorescence probes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Zigzag graphene nanoribbon edge reconstruction with stone-wales defects

In this paper, we study zigzag graphene nanoribbons with edges reconstructed with Stone-Wales defects, by means of an empirical (first-neighbor) tight-binding method, with parameters determined by ab initio calculations of very narrow ribbons. We explore the characteristics of the electronic band structure with a focus on the nature of edge states. Edge reconstruction allows the appearance of a new type of edge states. They are dispersive, with nonzero amplitudes in both sublattices; furthermore, the amplitudes have two components that decrease with different decay lengths with the distance from the edge; at the Dirac points one of these lengths diverges, whereas the other remains finite, of the order of the lattice parameter. We trace this curious effect to the doubling of the unit cell along the edge, brought about by the edge reconstruction. In the presence of a magnetic field, the zero-energy Landau level is no longer degenerate with edge states as in the case of the pristine zigzag ribbon.Fundacao para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) SFRH/BD/44456/2008.FEDER - Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade - COMPET

Synthesis and characterization of magnetoliposomes containing nickel ferrite nanoparticles covered with gold for applications in phototherapy

    Get PDF
In this work, nanoparticles with magnetic/plasmonic properties of nickel ferrite decorated with gold nanoparticles and core/shell nickel ferrite/gold nanoparticles were prepared and characterized. The synthesized nanoparticles were used for the preparation of solid magnetoliposomes (SMLs), these systems being our target of study. The nanosystems were evaluated for the ability to cause local heating upon excitation in the gold plasmonic band. For that, fluorescence quenching of rhodamine B incorporated in SMLs lipid layer was measured. The developed multifunctional nanosystems have shown promising results for application in combined cancer therapy (chemo/phototherapy).UIDB/04650/2020; PTDC/QUI-QFI/28020/2017 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-028020

Creation of a vehicular delay-tolerant network prototype

    Get PDF
Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Network (VDTN) is a new disruptive network architecture where vehicles act as the communication infrastructure. VDTN follows a layered architecture based on control and data planes separation, and positioning the bundle layer under the network layer. VDTN furnishes low-cost asynchronous communications coping with intermittent and sparse connectivity, variable delays and even no end-to-end connection. This paper presents a VDTN prototype (testbed) proposal, which implements and validates the VDTN layered architecture considering the proposed out-of-band signaling. The main goals of the prototype are emulation, demonstration, performance evaluation, and diagnose of protocol stacks and services, proving the applicability of VDTNs over a wide range of environments.Part of this work has been supported by the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Next Generation Networks and Applications Group (NetGNA), Covilhã Delegation, Portugal in the framework of the VDTN@Lab Project, and by the Euro-NF Network of Excellence from the Seventh Framework Programme of EU
