Mobile phone use among university students from Isfahan (Iran) and Malaga (Spain). Comparative study in the social and academic field.

    Get PDF
The work presents a comparative analysis of mobile phone use by university students from two universities, a group from Isfahan (Iran) and another from Málaga (Spain). To do this, two groups of young people (90 students from the Faculty of Education of Isfahan and 108 students from the University of Málaga) responded to an online survey translated to Farsi, which analyzed several of the items. The data indicate that the presence and use of the mobile is very widespread among the young population. Nine students out of ten keep the mobile on forever. Although differences are observed in the use of applications, times, etc., and in the case of the sudents of Isfahan it seems to be used more frequently in almost all sections (social networks, informal chat, photographs, etc.) than its Equals of Spain. The results confirm the strong implantation of the mobile phone in the social life of young people but not so much as an academic or professional resource of the same.Universidad de Málaga. Indoor positioning for smartphones without infrastructure and user adaptable

    Get PDF
Given that the classic solutions for positioning outdoors, such as GPS (Global Positioning System) or GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) do not work indoors, there have been emerging multiple alternatives for Indoor Location. Usually these solutions require extensive and complex installations, which involve high costs. In this thesis we present a robust indoor positioning solution for smartphones that maximizes location accuracy while minimizes the required infrastructure. We have considered two main modes of displacement: walking and in a vehicle. Our solution is robust to different users, allows them to carry the phone in different positions and allows to use the device freely while performing different daily activities, such as walking, driving , going up and down stairs, etc. We achieved that by developing a robust indoor positioning system that combines information from multiple sources such as radio frequency readings and inertial sensors

Characterization of the hyperbolic step of parabolic functions

A classical problem in Complex Dynamics on hyperbolic domains is to characterize the hyperbolic step of parabolic functions. This topic has been studied by several authors, leading to different results and providing characterizations that depend on the behaviour of the iterates of such function. In this work we provide new characterizations in terms of intrinsic properties of the function

Records of Olive Ridley Marine Turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea Eschscholtz 1829) in Venezuelan Waters: A Review of Historical Data Sets and Threats

We assess all the records of olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) in an exhaustive review of multiple data sources between 1977 and 2018 in Venezuela. We compiled 35 records of olive ridleys in the country. Our findings confirm the almost year-round presence of this species in Venezuelan waters

Two examples of vanishing and squeezing in K1

    Get PDF
Controlled topology is one of the main tools for proving the isomorphism conjecture concerning the algebraic K-theory of group rings. In this article we dive into this machinery in two examples: when the group is infinite cyclic and when it is the infinite dihedral group in both cases with the family of finite subgroups. We prove a vanishing theorem and show how to explicitly squeeze the generators of these groups in K1. For the infinite cyclic group, when taking coefficients in a regular ring, we get a squeezing result for every element of K1; this follows from the well-known result of Bass, Heller and Swan.Fil: Ellis, Eugenia. Hopf fibrations and totally geodesic submanifolds

We classify totally geodesic submanifolds in Hopf-Berger spheres, which constitute a special family of homogeneous spaces diffeomorphic to spheres constructed via Hopf fibrations. As a byproduct of our investigations, we have discovered very intriguing examples of totally geodesic submanifolds. In particular, we stand out the following three: totally geodesic submanifolds isometric to real projective spaces, uncountably many isometric but non-congruent totally geodesic submanifolds, and a totally geodesic submanifold that is not extrinsically homogeneous. Remarkably, all these examples only arise in certain Hopf-Berger spheres with positive curvature.Comment: Minor changes. To appear in JEMS (Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Algebraic kk-theory and the KH-isomorphism conjecture

We relate the Davis-L\"uck homology with coefficients in Weibel's homotopy K-theory to the equivariant algebraic kk-theory using homotopy theory and adjointness theorems. We express the left hand side of the assembly map for the KH-isomorphism conjecture in terms of equivariant algebraic kk-groups.Comment: 52 pages. The proof of Lemma 7.5 was clarified. Appendix D was added. Accepted version to appear in Documenta Mathematic

New catalog of distances to planetary nebulae based on Gaia parallaxes and statistical distances

We have developed a method to determine the most reliable distances for a large group of planetary nebulae. For this purpose, we analyze the distances obtained from \textit{Gaia} parallaxes and three determinations of statistical distances. The most reliable distance is derived for 2211 objects, and uncertainties for these distances are calculated in a homogeneous way. Using our most reliable distances, we compare the distributions of Galactic heights of hydrogen-poor and hydrogen-rich central stars of planetary nebulae. We find that [WR] central stars are closer to the Galactic plane than hydrogen-rich central stars and than other hydrogen-poor central stars. The latter have a similar distribution to hydrogen-rich central stars, which is significantly different from the one of [WR] central stars. This result disagrees with the proposed evolutionary sequence for hydrogen-poor central stars.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted in RMxA

Numerical analysis for a chemotaxis-navier-stokes system

    Get PDF
In this paper we develop a numerical scheme for approximating a d-dimensional chemotaxis- Navier–Stokes system, d= 2, 3, modeling cellular swimming in incompressible fluids. This model describes the chemotaxis-fluid interaction in cases where the chemical signal is consumed with a rate proportional to the amount of organisms. We construct numerical approximations based on the Finite Element method and analyze optimal error estimates and convergence towards regular solutions. In order to construct the numerical scheme, we use a splitting technique to deal with the chemo-attraction term in the cell-density equation, leading to introduce a new variable given by the gradient of the chemical concentration. Having the equivalent model, we consider a fully discrete Finite Element approximation which is well-posed and mass-conservative. We obtain uniform estimates and analyze the convergence of the scheme. Finally, we present some numerical simulations to verify the good behavior of our scheme, as well as to check numerically the optimal error estimates proved in our theoretical analysis
