Air quality in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina

Studies of different gaseous contaminants and particulate matter were made in several cities of the Buenos Aires Province in Argentina. These cities have noticeable differences in relation to the number of inhabitants, vehicular density, industrial activities, etc. They are La Plata, Bahía Blanca, Mar del Plata, Pergamino and San Nicolás, among other towns. In each city, continuous monitoring equipment with electrochemical sensor technology was installed, in order to determine the NOx, CO, HC, SO2 and O3 concentration. The particulate matter samples were picked up using high volume equipment and daily concentrations corresponding to total suspended solids (PM) were determined by a gravimetric method. The particles were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron diffraction analysis X-ray (EDAX). The results obtained showed a direct relationship between the type and quantity of the present particles and the general characteristics of the towns. The present study is part of the research project "Study of the Air Quality in Buenos Aires Province", financially supported by the National Agency of Scientific and Technological Promotion, Argentina.Facultad de Ciencias ExactasCentro de Investigación y Desarrollo en Ciencias Aplicada

Econometric analysis of the industrial growth determinants in Colombia

    Get PDF
An econometric study is carried out using a panel data model with fixed effects to identify the industrial development determinants in Colombia during the term 2005–2015. The database used in the study corresponds to World Bank and the Colombian state. The determinants of industrial growth identified at the theoretical level that allow the enhancement of productive capacities to face foreign competition in Colombia are: innovation; networks of innovations and knowledge among companies and organizations; the interest rate; the capital-product ratio, the unit labor cost; and the exchange rate. The amount invested in scientific, technological and innovation activities by industrial group is the only variable that is not significant in the model

Nonuniversality of front fluctuations for compact colonies of nonmotile bacteria

    Get PDF
The front of a compact bacterial colony growing on a Petri dish is a paradigmatic instance of non-equilibrium fluctuations in the celebrated Eden, or Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ), universality class. While in many experiments the scaling exponents crucially differ from the expected KPZ values, the source of this disagreement has remained poorly understood. We have performed growth experiments with B. subtilis 168 and E. coli ATCC 25922 under conditions leading to compact colonies in the classically alleged Eden regime, where individual motility is suppressed. Non-KPZ scaling is indeed observed for all accessible times, KPZ asymptotics being ruled out for our experiments due to the monotonic increase of front branching with time. Simulations of an effective model suggest the occurrence of transient nonuniversal scaling due to diffusive morphological instabilities, agreeing with expectations from detailed models of the relevant biological reaction-diffusion processes. This work has been supported by Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Agencia Estatal de Investigación, and Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (Spain and European Union) through Grants No. FIS2015- 66020-C2-1-P, FIS2015-69167-C2-1-P, FIS2015-73337-JIN, and BIO2016-79618-R, and by Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) Grant No. NANOAVANSENS S2013/MIT302

RAPID-retargetability for reusability of application-driven quadrature D/A interface block design

This paper describes ESPRIT 29648, concerning the development of an advanced methodology for the design of a mixed-signal application-driven quadrature D/A interface sub-system, aiming at its reusability by a retargetting procedure with minimal changes to their structural sub-blocks. The methodology is demonstrated, first, by developing a nominal design platform for the implementation in 0.35 /spl mu/m double-poly CMOS technology of a quadrature D/A interface block design for the GSM standard, and, then, by an automatic retargeting in an evolutionary technology through the realization of a silicon prototype in 0.25 /spl mu/m CMOS.European Community 2964

Changes in health behaviors, mental and physical health among older adults under severe lockdown restrictions during the covid-19 pandemic in spain

    Get PDF
We used data from 3041 participants in four cohorts of community-dwelling individuals aged =65 years in Spain collected through a pre-pandemic face-to-face interview and a telephone interview conducted between weeks 7 to 15 after the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown. On average, the confinement was not associated with a deterioration in lifestyle risk factors (smoking, alcohol intake, diet, or weight), except for a decreased physical activity and increased sedentary time, which reversed with the end of confinement. However, chronic pain worsened, and moderate declines in mental health, that did not seem to reverse after restrictions were lifted, were observed. Males, older adults with greater social isolation or greater feelings of loneliness, those with poorer housing conditions, as well as those with a higher prevalence of chronic morbidities were at increased risk of developing unhealthier lifestyles or mental health declines with confinement. On the other hand, previously having a greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet and doing more physical activity protected older adults from developing unhealthier lifestyles with confinement. If an-other lockdown were imposed during this or future pandemics, public health programs should spe-cially address the needs of older individuals with male sex, greater social isolation, sub-optimal housing conditions, and chronic morbidities because of their greater vulnerability to the enacted movement restrictions. © 2021 by the authors. Scanning tunneling microscopy of platinum electrode surfaces with different preferred crystallographic orientations

    Get PDF
We have used scanning tunneling microscopy to study the surface microtopography of platinum electrodes preferentially oriented by a procedure denoted as electrochemical faceting. The treated specimens show clear reoriented patches on the surface in the form of steps with well-defined orientations separated by terraces of different sizes. The microscopic data obtained by STM correspond well with voltammetric analysis.Instituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y Aplicada
