    Influence of denitrifiers abundance on N2O emissions in long term tillage system under a rainfed legume crop

    Current studies about nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from legume crops have raised considerable doubt, observing a high variability between sites (0.03-7.09 kg N2O–N ha−1 y -1) [1]. This high variability has been associated to climate and soil conditions, legume species and soil management practices (e.g. conservation or conventional tillage). Conservation tillage (i.e. no tillage (NT) and minimum tillage (MT)) has spread during the last decades because promotes several positive effects (increase of soil organic content, reduction of soil erosion and enhancement of carbon (C) sequestration). However, these benefits could be partly counterbalanced by negative effects on the release of N2O emissions. Among processes responsible for N2O production and consumption in soils, denitrification plays an importantrole both in tilled and no-tilled ropping systems [2]. Recently, amplification of functional bacterial genes involved in denitrification is being used to examine denitrifiers abundance and evaluate their influence on N2O emissions. NirK and nirS are functional genes encoding the cytochrome cd1 and copper nitrite reductase, which is the key enzyme regulating the denitrification process

    Prediction of Horizontal Daily Global Solar irradiation using artificial neural networks (ANNs) in the Castile and Leon Region, Spain

    The next day's global horizontal solar irradiation is predicted using artificial neural networks (ANNs) for its application in agricultural science and technology. The time series of eight−years data is measured in an agrometeorological station, which belongs to the SIAR irrigation system (Agroclimatic Information System for Irrigation, in Spanish), located in Mansilla Mayor (León, Castile and León region, Spain). The zone has a Csb climate classification (i.e., Mediterranean Warm Summer Climate), according to Koppen−Geiger. The data for the years (2004−2010) are used for ANNs training and the 2011 as the validation year. ANN models were designed and evaluated with different numbers of inputs and neurons in the hidden layer. A neuron was used in the output layer, for all models, where the simulation of global solar irradiation for the next day on the horizontal surface results. Evaluated values of the input data were the horizontal daily global irradiation of the current day [H(t)] and two days before [H(t−1), H(t−2)], the day of the year [J(t)], and the daily clearness index [Kt(t)]. Validated results showed that best adjustment models are the ANN 7 model (RMSE = 3.76 MJ/(m2 ·d), with two inputs [H(t), Kt(t)] and four neurons in the hidden layer) and the ANN 4 model (RMSE = 3.75 MJ/(m2 ·d), with two inputs [H(t), J(t)] and two neurons in the hidden layer). Thus, the studied ANN models had better results compared to classic methods (CENSOLAR typical year, weighted moving mean, linear regression, Fourier and Markov analysis) and are practically easier as they need less input variable

    Predicción de la irradiación solar global diaria horizontal mediante redes neuronales artificiales en la región de Castilla y León, España

    Resumen. Este artículo, se centra en la predicción de la irradiación solar global diaria horizontal, por ser el caso más interesante en la meteorología agrícola, por ejemplo, en las previsiones de necesidades de riego, utilizando la técnica de las redes neuronales artificiales (RNAs) de la inteligencia computacional, a partir de variables accesibles en las estaciones agrometeorológicas. El lugar donde fueron medidos los datos, utilizados para entrenar las RNAs, caracterizan donde se pueden volver a utilizar este tipo de modelos, en este estudio fueron las estaciones meteorológicas de la red SIAR en Castilla y León, en concreto la situada en Mansilla Mayor (León), durante los años 2004-2010. Los modelos RNAs se construyeron en la entrada con los datos medidos de irradiación solar global diaria de uno, dos y tres días anteriores, añadiendo el día del año J(t)=1..365, para predecir su valor el día siguiente. Los resultados obtenidos, validados durante el año 2011 completo RMSE=3,8012 MJ/(m2d), concluyen que las RNAs estudiadas mejoran los métodos clásicos comparados: 1) año típico CENSOLAR RMSE=5,1829 MJ/(m2d), 2) media móvil ponderada con la autocorrelación parcial de 11 días de retardo RMSE=3,9810 MJ/(m2d), 3) regresión lineal sobre el valor del día anterior RMSE=4,2434 MJ/(m2d), 4) año típico Fourier utilizado el 1er armónico RMSE=4,2747 MJ/(m2d), y 5) las matrices de transición de Markov para 33 estados posibles RMSE=4,3653 MJ/(m2d). Durante los días de cambio brusco en el nivel de irradiación solar, se observan los mayores errores de predicción. Se plantea utilizar en la entrada otras variables para mejorar la eficacia del modelo RNA. Una de las variables probadas fue el índice de claridad diario Kt=H/H0, resultando una mejora RMSE=3,7703 MJ/(m2d).Palabras clave: insolación, evapotranspiración, agrometeorología, inteligencia computacional

    Estimation of the hourly global solar irradiation on the tilted and oriented plane of photovoltaic solar panels applied to greenhouse production

    Agrometeorological stations have horizontal solar irradiation data available, but the design and simulation of photovoltaic (PV) systems require data about the solar panel (inclined and/or oriented). Greenhouses for agricultural production, outside the large protected production areas, are usually off-grid; thus, the solar irradiation variable on the panel plane is critical for an optimal PV design. Modeling of solar radiation components (beam, diffuse, and ground-reflected) is carried out by calculating the extraterrestrial solar radiation, solar height, angle of incidence, and diffuse solar radiation. In this study, the modeling was done using Simulink-MATLAB blocks to facilitate its application, using the day of the year, the time of day, and the hourly horizontal global solar irradiation as input variables. The rest of the parameters (i.e., inclination, orientation, solar constant, albedo, latitude, and longitude) were fixed in each block. The results obtained using anisotropic models of diffuse solar irradiation of the sky in the region of Castile and León (Spain) showed improvements over the results obtained with isotropic models. This work enables the precise estimation of solar irradiation on a solar panel flexibly, for particular places, and with the best models for each of the components of solar radiation

    The Palaeocene Cerro Munro tonalite intrusion (Chubut Province, Argentina): A plutonic remnant of explosive volcanism?

    The Cerro Munro sub-volcanic intrusion is emplaced in the back-arc (400 km from the trench) as small sub-circular tonalite-granodiorite plutons with abundant radial porphyritic dikes. U-Pb zircon SHRIMP data give an age of crystallization of 57 Ma ± 1.4 Ma. It is located to the east of the North Patagonian Batholith (NPB) that shows a protracted and episodic magmatic history from Cretaceous to Miocene time. The NPB Palaeogene episode is characterized by the lack of magmatic activity at the arc axis, as small plutonic emplacements move to the fore-arc and back-arc. This Palaeogene tectono-magmatic episode is ruled by the detachment of the Aluk plate during the Aluk-Farallon-SAM triple junction, active at that time along northern Patagonia active margin, changing the Cretaceous ?NPB orogenic? setting to a Palaeogene ?Munro transitional? tectono-magmatic setting. Near the contacts, the tonalite contains abundant enclaves of igneous appearance and variable size from several cm to dm, described as autoliths. The study of autoliths and host tonalite reveals interesting results on the processes of fractionation in a thermally zoned magma chamber. Autoliths, and in a large extent the host tonalite, represent disguised cumulates from which a hydrous silicic liquid was extracted. Barometry calculations from mineral chemistry in both autoliths and tonalites record a shallow pressure of emplacement of 0.5 kbar. Rhyolite-dacite flows and ignimbrites, surrounding the northern contact of the Cerro Munro tonalite, may represent the exsolved liquid from the plutonic cumulates.     Changes in Anxiety and Depression Traits Induced by Energy Restriction: Predictive Value of the Baseline Status

    Current evidence proposes diet quality as a modifiable risk factor for mental or emotional impairments. However, additional studies are required to investigate the effect of dietary patterns and weight loss on improving psychological symptoms. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of energy-restriction, prescribed to overweight and obese participants, on anxiety and depression symptoms, as well as the potential predictive value of some baseline psychological features on weight loss. Overweight and obese participants (n = 305) were randomly assigned for 16 weeks to two hypocaloric diets with different macronutrient distribution: a moderately high-protein (MHP) diet and a low-fat (LF) diet. Anthropometrical, clinical, psychological, and lifestyle characteristics were assessed at baseline and at the end of the intervention. The nutritional intervention evidenced that weight loss has a beneficial effect on trait anxiety score in women (β = 0.24, p = 0.03), depression score in all population (β = 0.15, p = 0.02), particularly in women (β = 0.22, p = 0.03) and in subjects who followed the LF diet (β = 0.22, p = 0.04). Moreover, weight loss could be predicted by anxiety status at baseline, mainly in women and in those who were prescribed a LF diet. This trial suggests that weight loss triggers an improvement in psychological traits, and that anxiety symptoms could predict those volunteers that benefit most from a balanced calorie-restricted intervention, which will contribute to individualized precision nutrition

    Ageism and nursing students, past or reality?: a systematic review

    Objective: This systematic review aimed to summarise and update existing knowledge about ageism among nursing students through the following research question: what is the perception and attitudes of ageism among student nurses? Design: A systematic review of longitudinal and cross-sectional studies of ageism in nursing students was carried out. Data sources: The literature search was conducted in the scientific databases Pubmed and Scopus in February 2021. Review methods: After the screening process, 22 studies meeting the selection criteria were selected; 8 more were identified after manually searching the selected paper' reference lists. A total of 30 studies were included in the review. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklists for Analytical Cross-Sectional studies and for Cohort Studies were used to appraise the articles' quality. Results: There was large variability in the manifestation of ageism among student nurses, as well as in the instruments used for assessment. Most of the articles analysed attitudes towards old age, the majority of which were positive. Being a female student, being on the final year of study and having regular contact or cohabitation with an older adult were three of the main determinants in the expression of positive attitudes towards the elderly. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that student nurses generally have positive attitudes towards old age, although ageist beliefs and discriminatory behaviours were identified and should be studied in greater depth. Training programs for future care professionals have a responsibility to educate from a non-stereotypical perspective based on current societal needs

    Age-dependent impact of two exercise training regimens on genomic and metabolic remodeling in skeletal muscle and liver of male mice

    Skeletal muscle adapts to different exercise training modalities with age; however, the impact of both variables at the systemic and tissue levels is not fully understood. Here, adult and old C57BL/6 male mice were assigned to one of three groups: sedentary, daily high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT), or moderate intensity continuous training (MICT) for 4 weeks, compatible with the older group’s exercise capacity. Improvements in body composition, fasting blood glucose, and muscle strength were mostly observed in the MICT old group, while effects of HIIT training in adult and old animals was less clear. Skeletal muscle exhibited structural and functional adaptations to exercise training, as revealed by electron microscopy, OXPHOS assays, respirometry, and muscle protein biomarkers. Transcriptomics analysis of gastrocnemius muscle combined with liver and serum metabolomics unveiled an age-dependent metabolic remodeling in response to exercise training. These results support a tailored exercise prescription approach aimed at improving health and ameliorating age-associated loss of muscle strength and function in the elderly.This work was supported by funding from the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute on Aging/NIH.
