Maritime Climate in the Canary Islands and its Implications for the Construction of Coastal Infrastructures
Islands are isolated systems that depend on maritime trade for their subsistence. Efficient, durable and structurally reliable port infrastructures are essential for the economic and social development of islands. However, not all port infrastructures are designed in the same way. They can vary, depending on whether they are built on continental land, built on non-volcanic islands or built on volcanic oceanic islands (such as the Canary Islands, Spain). The latter islands are the subject of this study due to their specific features, construction difficulties and the importance of sound maritime infrastructures. The maritime climate of an area consists of the wave and storm regimes that affect it and, from these, the coastal dynamics and coastal formations of that area can be studied. For this reason, historical data were collated on significant directional wave heights from 1958 to 2015 from several WANA-SIMAR points in the virtual buoy network of State Ports of Spain located near the Canary Islands. These data have been studied to obtain the maximum directional wave heights (Hs) at each point. With this analysis, we have obtained useful summary tables to calculate wave height by a graphic method that transforms the distribution function into a line drawn on probabilistic paper, using reduced variables. This enables adjustments to be made by linear regression and minimum square methods to facilitate planning and design of maritime infrastructures in a reliable way. Mergers and interactions in SDSS type 2 quasars at z~0.3-0.4. SDSS J143027.66-005614.8: a case study
We present a compilation of HST images of 58 luminous SDSS type 2 AGNs at
0.3<z<0.4. 42 of them are type 2 quasars, which are a good representation of
all optically selected SDSS type 2 quasars in this range. We find that the
majority of the host galaxies are ellipticals (30/42 or 71%). This is
consistent with studies of radio loud and radio quiet type 1 quasars which show
that their host galaxies are in general ellipticals. A significant fraction of
type 2 quasars (>25/42 or >59%) show clear signatures of morphological
disturbance which are in most cases identified with merger/interaction
processes. We discuss this in the context of related works on type 2 quasars
and powerful radio galaxies.
We study in detail the particular case of the radio quiet type 2 quasar SDSS
J143027.66-005614.8 at z=0.32 based on VLT, HST and SDSS imaging and
spectroscopic data. We discuss the global properties of the object in the
context of theoretical and observational studies of galaxy mergers/interactions
and their role in the triggering of the nuclear and star formation activities
in the most luminous active galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 25 pages, 21 figure

Taxonomy and hierarchy of psychological abuse strategies in intimate partner relationships
This study focuses on the analysis from of a psychosocial perspective of the components of psychological abuse in intimate partner relationships. Following a review of studies on the subject, the main objective that emerged was the need for a new taxonomy of strategies of psychological abuse accompanied by the corresponding operational definitions. After the proposal of this new classification, a second objective emerged that consisted of submitting it for evaluation by a group of experts through a Delphi study, in which thirty-two experts from the academic and professional worlds participated. These experts were asked to assess the suitability of the system categories, and to grade quantitatively the severity of the impact made by each of the strategies on the global phenomenon of psychological abuse in couples. The results show that the experts ratified the new classification of strategies and their operational definitions, thus endorsing their content and construct validity. In addition, they classified the strategies based on their degree of severity; those of an emotional nature were considered the severest, followed by those related to the immediate context, with those of a cognitive type in third place, and lastly, the behavioural ones. Finally, we discuss the results, and their implications.
The aim of this experiment is to study the potential use of IT (infrared termography) for measurement of PPD (Purified protein derivate) test in goats. The study of the temperatures showed a significant increase at 24hours post-inoculation of the PPD in the set of all the individuals, not being observed significant influence of the colour of the animals on the temperatures. The comparison of the results from the PPD skin test, and IT did not demonstrate significant association
A Markov chain model to investigate the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in hospitals
Ordinary differential equation (ODE) models used in mathematical epidemiology
assume explicitly or implicitly large populations. For the study of infections
in a hospital this is an extremely restrictive assumption as typically a
hospital ward has a few dozen, or even fewer, patients. This work reframes a
well-known model used in the study of the spread of antibiotic-resistant
bacteria in hospitals, to consider the pathogen transmission dynamics in small
populations. In this vein, this paper proposes a Markov chain model to describe
the spread of a single bacterial species in a hospital ward where patients may
be free of bacteria or may carry bacterial strains that are either sensitive or
resistant to antimicrobial agents. We determine the probability law of the
\emph{exact} reproduction number , which is here defined as
the random number of secondary infections generated by those patients who are
accommodated in a predetermined bed before a patient who is free of bacteria is
accommodated in this bed for the first time. Specifically, we decompose the
exact reproduction number into two contributions allowing
us to distinguish between infections due to the sensitive and the resistant
bacterial strains. Our methodology is mainly based on structured Markov chains
and the use of related matrix-analytic methods. This guarantees the
compatibility of the new, finite-population model, with large population models
present in the literature and takes full advantage, in its mathematical
analysis, of the intrinsic stochasticity.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figure
