The Soundscape and Listening as an Approach to Sensuous Urbanism: The Case of Puerta del Sol (Madrid)

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the placemaking process and experimental research on the citizens' assessment of the soundscape in Puerta del Sol in Madrid. Numerous studies conducted in recent decades have shown that sound is a crucial element capable of providing new insights into the relationship between human beings and the environment. Sound possesses physical-sensory-perceptual qualities which connect the emotional and the rational aspects of the experience of the place, overcoming the aesthetic/scientific duality. By default, the soundscape is the result of a collective production. It is the resonant expression of the multiple activities and uses that inhabit a space. The soundscape of everyday life provides a vision of life in a particular place, giving meaning and a singular character to the fact of living there. The concept and methods of the soundscape arise from sensitive experiences of the place in direct relation to a community. This exploratory research focused on in situ methods (soundwalks, improvised interview mappings, sound archives, performances, and collective sound actions) as expressions of collective listening to place. This article also focuses on how to map and share the result of this research, the technology to build a collective digital place as a place of confluence of experiences, citizen knowledge, and reflection on the situated soundscape

    Get PDF
Junt

An Evolutionary Computational Approach for the Problem of Unit Commitment and Economic Dispatch in Microgrids under Several Operation Modes

    Get PDF
In the last decades, new types of generation technologies have emerged and have been gradually integrated into the existing power systems, moving their classical architectures to distributed systems. Despite the positive features associated to this paradigm, new problems arise such as coordination and uncertainty. In this framework, microgrids constitute an effective solution to deal with the coordination and operation of these distributed energy resources. This paper proposes a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to address the combined problem of Unit Commitment (UC) and Economic Dispatch (ED). With this end, a model of a microgrid is introduced together with all the control variables and physical constraints. To optimally operate the microgrid, three operation modes are introduced. The first two attend to optimize economical and environmental factors, while the last operation mode considers the errors induced by the uncertainties in the demand forecasting. Therefore, it achieves a robust design that guarantees the power supply for different confidence levels. Finally, the algorithm was applied to an example scenario to illustrate its performance. The achieved simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades TEC2016-80242-PMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad PCIN-2015-043Universidad de Sevilla Programa propio de I+D+

Fluorescence emission analysis of photodynamic therapy photosensitizer as a monitoring biomarker

Photodynamic Therapy is a selective optical tumor destruction technique with practically no secondary effects. Monitoring by fluorescence photosensitizer emission is essential for an adequate treatment dosimetry, which avoids recurrence. This work has been partially supported by the project “New active phases in transition metals and rare earth nano-oxides stabilized at high pressure” (MAT2015-69508-P) of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, cofunded by FEDER funds, and by the San Cándido Foundation

Double-zero degeneracy and heteroclinic cycles in a perturbation of the Lorenz system

    Get PDF
In this paper we consider a 3D three-parameter unfolding close to the normal form of the triple-zero bifurcation exhibited by the Lorenz system. First we study analytically the double-zero degeneracy (a double-zero eigenvalue with geometric multiplicity two) and two Hopf bifurcations. We focus on the more complex case in which the double-zero degeneracy organizes several codimension-one singularities, namely transcritical, pitchfork, Hopf and heteroclinic bifurcations. The analysis of the normal form of a Hopf-transcritical bifurcation allows to obtain the expressions for the corresponding bifurcation curves. A degenerate double-zero bifurcation is also considered. The theoretical information obtained is very helpful to start a numerical study of the 3D system. Thus, the presence of degenerate heteroclinic and homoclinic orbits, T-point heteroclinic loops and chaotic attractors is detected. We find numerical evidence that, at least, four curves of codimension-two global bifurcations are related to the triple-zero degeneracy in the system analyzed.

The objective was to achieve Indexes of Cut adjusted to the soils of the regions in study and to relate the same ones with simple determinations of laboratory like sedimentation volume. It was observed in the region a great disparity of methods to use for the calculation of the plane project to obtain and the application of values of relationship cut/fill without local validation. The work was carried out in Mendoza's county, 22 parcels were raised in the areas irrigated by the rivers Mendoza and Tunuyán. In the commented paper ten nonlinear chaotic systems are presented. Authors state that these systems do not exhibit Shilnikov chaos. Unfortunately, this assertion is not correctly proved because they use an erroneous theorem from the literature.

On the Takens-Bogdanov Bifurcation in the Chua’s Equation

    Get PDF
The analysis of the Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation of the equilibrium at the origin in the Chua’s equation with a cubic nonlinearity is carried out. The local analysis provides, in first approximation, different bifurcation sets, where the presence of several dynamical behaviours (including periodic, homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits) is predicted. The local results are used as a guide to apply the adequate numerical methods to obtain a global understanding of the bifurcation sets. The study of the normal form of the Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation shows the presence of a degenerate (codimension-three) situation, which is analyzed in both homoclinic and heteroclinic cases

Study of a homoclinic canard explosion from a degenerate center

    Get PDF
Canard explosion is an appealing event occurring in singularly perturbed systems. In this phenomenon, upon variation of a parameter within an exponentially small range, the amplitude of a small limit cycle increases abruptly. In this letter we analyze the canard explosion in a limit cycle related to a degenerate center (with zero Jacobian matrix). We provide a second-order approximation of the critical value of the parameter for which the canard explosion occurs. Numerical results are compared with the analytical predictions and excellent agreements are found. As in this problem the canard explosion ends in a homoclinic connection, a very good approximation for the homoclinic curve in the parameter plane is also obtained. This work has been partially supported by the Ministerio de Econom´ıa y Competitividad, Spain (MTM2017- 87915-C2-1-P), by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovaci´on y Universidades, Spain (PGC2018-096265-B-I00) and by the Consejer´ıa de Econom´ıa, Innovaci´on, Ciencia y Empleo de la Junta de Andaluc´ıa, Spain (projects FQM-276, TIC-0130 and UHU-1260150).
