    Thiol-based redox regulation in sexual plant reproduction: new insights and perspectives

    The success of sexual reproduction in plants involves (i) the proper formation of the plant gametophytes (pollen and embryo sac) containing the gametes, (ii) the accomplishment of specific interactions between pollen grains and the stigma, which subsequently lead to (iii) the fusion of the gametes and eventually to (iv) the seed setting. Owing to the lack of mobility, plants have developed specific regulatory mechanisms to control all developmental events underlying the sexual plant reproduction according to environmental challenges. Over the last decade, redox regulation and signaling have come into sight as crucial mechanisms able to manage critical stages during sexual plant reproduction. This regulation involves a complex redox network which includes reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), glutathione and other classic buffer molecules or antioxidant proteins, and some thiol/disulphide-containing proteins belonging to the thioredoxin superfamily, like glutaredoxins (GRXs) or thioredoxins (TRXs). These proteins participate as critical elements not only in the switch between the mitotic to the meiotic cycle but also at further developmental stages of microsporogenesis. They are also implicated in the regulation of pollen rejection as the result of self-incompatibility. In addition, they display precise space-temporal patterns of expression and are present in specific localizations like the stigmatic papillae or the mature pollen, although their functions and subcellular localizations are not clear yet. In this review we summarize insights and perspectives about the presence of thiol/disulphide-containing proteins in plant reproduction, taking into account the general context of the cell redox network.     A guide to the eggs and larvae of 100 common Western Mediterranean Sea bony fish species.

    This guide presents the egg and larval descriptions of 100 species of fishes belonging to 55 families, which are most likely to be present in plankton samples collected in the continental shelf and oceanic waters of the Western Mediterranean Sea. The guide is structured in two parts. The first introductory part describes the different applications of ichthyoplankton studies in fisheries research, the main sampling strategies, methods and gears, the early life history of fishes and how to identify them. A brief historical account of ichthyoplankton identification studies in the Mediterranean Sea is also provided. The second part of the guide contains the identification sheets of the species. Each species sheet includes the following information: illustration of the adult fish and information on its habitat and spawning season; description of the main features useful towards identifying the egg, yolk sac and larval stage of each fish species; illustrations and (when available) photos of the different life stages.Versión del edito

    Bit Error Probability and Capacity Bound of OFDM Systems in Deterministic Doubly-Selective Channels

The Version of Record is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1109/TVT.2020.3011365[Abstract]: Doubly-selective channels, such as those that occur when the transmitter and the receiver move relative to each other at high speeds, are a key scenario for fifth generation (5G) cellular systems, which are mostly based in the use of the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. In this paper, we consider an OFDM system using quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols and we show that, when transmitting over deterministic doubly-selective channels, the inter-carrier-interference (ICI) affecting a symbol can be well approximated by a complex-valued normal distribution. Based on this, we derive a lower bound for the link capacity using the Shannon-Hartley theorem. Finally, we provide an approximation of the bit error probability (BEP) using the well-known BEP expressions for Gray-coded QAM constellations over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels, and show numerical results that confirm that the proposed BEP expression approximates accurately the bit error ratio (BER) of the OFDM system for standardized channel models.     Experiences in teaching Hydrogen Technologies in the framework of the International Campus of Excellence Andalucia TECH

    The increasing importance of hydrogen technologies is demanding prepared professionals in the numerous topics related to this energy vector. Apart from some basic and advanced courses given by actual experts in these topics, universities must play an important role in the general formation of future professionals. In this way, the International Campus of Excellence (ICE) Andalucía TECH has created several degrees taught jointly by its participating universities of Seville (US) and Málaga (UMA). Among those degrees, Energy Engineering is the best suited to the field of this conference because this degree provide future engineers with specialized training in energy generation, transformation and management. In relation to hydrogen technologies this degree includes a cross sectional optional unit named Hydrogen Based Systems (4.5 ECTS/112.5 h), which is placed in the last term of the fourth year and sharing space with work placement and mobility courses. This paper will present some author’s experiences as teachers of that unit during its short history of only three years. In spite of being a joint degree, which is coordinated between both universities (US and UMA) trying to give similar contents, it is interesting to highlight the differential experiences coming from the teachers of both universities in relation to the teaching methodologies and academic results.Universidad de Málaga.
