without cases of deep infection. 14,9% of the patients needed
postoperative transfusion. We reported 3,5% fractures of the
calcar during surgery and 0,87% of postoperative periprosthetic fractures. We didn ́t reported any neural complications
or mortality within six weeks postoperatively. Conclusions:
The most frequent complication is dislocation, mainly in
cases whose underlying diagnose was hip fracture. Although
prophylaxis is done, deep vein thrombosis goes on being a
frequent complication
Impact bruises in pomaceae fruits: Evaluation methods and structural features.
Using a laboratory impact tester, impacts were applied to fruits of different varieties of apples and pears. The response to impact was analized, and many parameters were recorded, to be correlated to bruise susceptibility and to ripeness changes. Different methods for the detection and evaluation of the bruised Area and its features were studied, using direct observation and various reactives. Different types of bruises were established
Nutritional Status of Non-Institutionalized Adults Aged over 65. Study of Weight and Health in Older Adults (PYSMA)
Background. A significant increase in the prevalence of malnourishment, obesity, and sarcopenic obesity has been observed in developed countries over the last few decades. In Spain, this especially happens in populations over 65 who are not institutionalized. Differences in lifestyle, medication, and economic capacity partially explain this increase. Objective. To study the nutritional status of a population of 65 year-olds and subjects who are not institutionalized, in the Cadiz region (Spain). Methods. Observational, transversal study carried out on 2621 subjects who are 65 years old and over, with a direct weight and height measurement, in 150 pharmacy offices from 44 locations. A mobile application was designed for homogeneous data collection in all the pharmacy offices. The data required from all subjects was gender, age, postal code, social security contribution regime, if the patient lives alone, type of food consumed as the main meals, level of physical activity, polypharmacy, weight, and height. Results. The prevalence of overweight and obesity amounts to 82.2% of the population (43.2% overweight and 39% obese). We found an inverse relationship between the prevalence of overweight and obesity with carrying out physical activity and having full dinners. Conclusion. We identify the need to reinforce the messages to the elderly aimed at maintaining adequate physical activity and assessing the quality and quantity of dinners, as well as reducing, as much as possible, the treatments that may lead to weight gain
Understory plant communities show resistance to drought, hurricanes, and experimental warming in a wet tropical forest
Global climate change has led to rising temperatures and to more frequent and intense climatic events, such as storms and droughts. Changes in climate and disturbance regimes can have non-additive effects on plant communities and result in complicated legacies we have yet to understand. This is especially true for tropical forests, which play a significant role in regulating global climate. We used understory vegetation data from the Tropical Responses to Altered Climate Experiment (TRACE) in Puerto Rico to evaluate how plant communities responded to climate warming and disturbance. The TRACE understory vegetation was exposed to a severe drought (2015), 2 years of experimental warming (4°C above ambient in half of the plots, 2016–2017 and 2018–2019), and two major hurricanes (Irma and María, September 2017). Woody seedlings and saplings were censused yearly from 2015 to 2019, with an additional census in 2015 after the drought ended. We evaluated disturbance-driven changes in species richness, diversity, and composition across ontogeny. We then used Bayesian predictive trait modeling to assess how species responded to disturbance and how this might influence the functional structure of the plant community. Our results show decreased seedling richness after hurricane disturbance, as well as increased sapling richness and diversity after warming. We found a shift in species composition through time for both seedlings and saplings, yet the individual effects of each disturbance were not significant. At both ontogenetic stages, we observed about twice as many species responding to experimental warming as those responding to drought and hurricanes. Predicted changes in functional structure point to disturbance-driven functional shifts toward a mixture of fast-growing and drought-tolerant species. Our findings demonstrate that the tropical forest understory community is more resistant to climatic stressors than expected, especially at the sapling stage. However, early signs of changes in species composition suggest that, in a warming climate with frequent droughts and hurricanes, plant communities might shift over time toward fast-growing or drought-tolerant species
Reciclado de residuos cerámicos en materiales absorbentes acústicos
The scope of this investigation is to develop a material mainly composed (80% w/w) of ceramic wastes that can be applied in the manufacture of road traffic noise reducing devices. The characterization of the product has been carried out attending to its acoustic, physical and mechanical properties, by measuring the sound absorption coefficient at normal incidence, the open void ratio, density and compressive strength. Since the sound absorbing behavior of a porous material is related to the size of the pores and the thickness of the specimen tested, the influence of the particle grain size of the ceramic waste and the thickness of the samples tested on the properties of the final product has been analyzed. The results obtained have been compared to a porous concrete made of crushed granite aggregate as a reference commercial material traditionally used in similar applications. Compositions with coarse particles showed greater sound absorption properties than compositions made with finer particles, besides presenting better sound absorption behavior than the reference porous concrete. Therefore, a ceramic waste-based porous concrete can be potentially recycled in the highway noise barriers field.

Functional correlates of response inhibition in impulse control disorders in Parkinson’s disease
Available online 11 September 2021.Impulse control disorder is a prevalent side-effect of Parkinson’s disease (PD) medication, with a strong negative
impact on the quality of life of those affected. Although impulsivity has classically been associated with response
inhibition deficits, previous evidence from PD patients with impulse control disorder (ICD) has not revealed
behavioral dysfunction in response inhibition. In this study, 18 PD patients with ICD, 17 PD patients without this
complication, and 15 healthy controls performed a version of the conditional Stop Signal Task during functional
magnetic resonance imaging. Whole-brain contrasts, regions of interest, and functional connectivity analyses
were conducted. Our aim was to investigate the neural underpinnings of two aspects of response inhibition:
proactive inhibition, inhibition that has been prepared beforehand, and restrained inhibition, inhibition of an
invalid inhibitory tendency. We observed that, in respect to the other two groups, PD patients with ICD exhibited
hyperactivation of the stopping network bilaterally while performing proactive inhibition. When engaged in
restrained inhibition, they showed hyperactivation of the left inferior frontal gyrus, an area linked to action
monitoring. Restrained inhibition also resulted in changes to the functional co-activation between inhibitory
regions and left inferior parietal cortex and right supramarginal gyrus. Our findings indicate that PD patients
with ICD completed the inhibition task correctly, showing altered engagement of inhibitory and attentional
areas. During proactive inhibition they showed bilateral hyperactivation of two inhibitory regions, while during
restrained inhibition they showed additional involvement of attentional areas responsible for alerting and
orienting. This work was supported by grants from the Carlos III Institute of
