Chlorine and Sulfur in Nearby Planetary Nebulae and H II Regions

We derive the chlorine abundances in a sample of nearby planetary nebulae (PNe) and H II regions that have some of the best available spectra. We use a nearly homogeneous procedure to derive the abundance in each object and find that the Cl/H abundance ratio shows similar values in H II regions and PNe. This supports our previous interpretation that the underabundance we found for oxygen in the H II regions is due to the depletion of their oxygen atoms into organic refractory dust components. For other elements, the bias introduced by ionization correction factors in their derived abundances can be very important, as we illustrate here for sulfur using photoionization models. Even for low-ionization PNe, the derived sulfur abundances can be lower than the real ones by up to 0.3 dex, and the differences found with the abundances derived for H II regions that have similar S/H can reach 0.4 dex.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, proceedings of the IAU Symposium No. 283, Planetary Nebulae: an Eye to the Futur

Hace más de 500 años, la búsqueda de riquezas llevó casi a la extinción a los ancestrales habitantes del suelo colombiano. Hoy, los herederos de esa tragedia ven cómo el afán por explotar los recursos naturales y los intereses de diferentes actores, han desatado conflictos ambientales que estremecen sus territorios. En Colombia hay unos 87 pueblos indígenas y hasta el momento, se han identificado y documentado 62 conflictos ambientales de diverso origen en sus tierras, los cuales muestran que las comunidades han sido afectadas por los proyectos que promueven el desarrollo especialmente económico

Proyectos y conflictos en relación con la consulta previa

Este documento analiza la relación entre los proyectos de desarrollo, los cuales son autorizados mediante licencias ambientales en nuestro país, y los conflictos en relación con el derecho fundamental a la consulta previa que tienen los pueblos indígenas y demás grupos étnicos y los cuales han terminado por ser resueltos ante los estrados judiciales. Este artículo está orientado a establecer los requisitos mínimos que debe tener la consulta previa para su implementación y garantía de los derechos de los pueblos indígenas al territorio, la autonomía, la participación y el desarrollo propio. Adicionalmente, ofrece una mirada al tema del consentimiento previo, libre e informado en el marco de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos y de la Corte Constitucional a través de una de sus providencias, para terminar sosteniendo que estas temáticas tan complejas, deben ser abordadas desde el enfoque basada en derechos humanos

Oxygen enrichment in carbon-rich planetary nebulae

We study the relation between the chemical composition and the type of dust present in a group of 20 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) that have high quality optical and infrared spectra. The optical spectra are used, together with the best available ionization correction factors, to calculate the abundances of Ar, C, Cl, He, N, Ne, and O relative to H. The infrared spectra are used to classify the PNe in two groups depending on whether the observed dust features are representative of oxygen-rich or carbon-rich environments. The sample contains one object from the halo, eight from the bulge, and eleven from the local disc. We compare their chemical abundances with nucleosynthesis model predictions and with the ones obtained in seven Galactic H II regions of the solar neighbourhood. We find evidence of O enrichment (by $\sim$ 0.3 dex) in all but one of the PNe with carbon-rich dust (CRD). Our analysis shows that Ar, and especially Cl, are the best metallicity indicators of the progenitors of PNe. There is a tight correlation between the abundances of Ar and Cl in all the objects, in agreement with a lockstep evolution of both elements. The range of metallicities implied by the Cl abundances covers one order of magnitude and we find significant differences in the initial masses and metallicities of the PNe with CRD and oxygen-rich dust (ORD). The PNe with CRD tend to have intermediate masses and low metallicities, whereas most of the PNe with ORD show higher enrichments in N and He, suggesting that they had high-mass progenitors.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 14 pages, 8 figures, 5 table

(500) Days of Postfeminism: A Multidisciplinary Analysis of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl Stereotype in its Contexts

En 2007, tras haber visto el film Elizabethtown (2005), el crítico cinematográfico Nathan Rabin acuñó el término Manic Pixie Dream Girl para describir el nacimiento de un tipo de protagonistas femeninas caracterizadas por su joie de vivre y superficialidad, criaturas solamente existentes en la imaginación febril de sensibles guionistasdirectores, cuyo único cometido es enseñar a estos hombres solitarios a abrazar la vida en sus infinitos misterios y aventuras (2007). Desde entonces, a pesar de que este tipo de protagonistas se han multiplicado, y el término ha sido absorbido por la cultura popular, no se ha realizado un solo análisis académico de dicho estereotipo y su ideología de género, quizás debido a la pátina de credibilidad ideológica otorgada por el cine independiente (indie) en el que se enmarca. Sin embargo, la Manic Pixie Dream Girl, con su representación nostálgica de femineidad aniñada y «mona» (Ngai, 2012), su vulnerabilidad, su libertad sexual neoliberal, y, sobre todo, su ser-para-el-Otro, quizás constituya la más potente encarnación de las ideologías postfeministas dentro del cine independiente. Asimismo, su filosofía carpe diem y su estética hipster hablan de la idiosincrasia específica de nuestra era, caracterizada, según Slavoj Zizek (1994), por un mandato social hacia el disfrute hedonista. // In 2007, after watching Elizabethtown (2005), film critic Nathan Rabin coined the term Manic Pixie Dream Girl in order to describe a nascent filmic female trope as «that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures» (2007). Since then, the concept acquired enormous widespread cultural currency, and the type of female characters responding to the stereotype multiplied, although not a single thorough scrutiny of its gender values has been undertaken from the Academia, perhaps due to the fact that independent («indie») productions – where most of these characters are found – provide their films with a certain patina of ideological credibility. However, with her performance of traditional cute (Ngai, 2012), girlish femininity, her vulnerability, her neoliberal sexual freedom, and, above all, her being-for-the-Other, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl perhaps constitutes the most powerful embodiment of postfeminist ideologies within independent cinema. In addition, her carpe diem philosophy and her «hipster» aesthetics speak directly to the idiosyncrasy of our time, characterized, as Slavoj Zizek (1994) explains, by a social injunction to «Enjoy!».
