    Dynamics of Rotation of Super-Earths

We numerically investigate the dynamics of rotation of several close-in terrestrial exoplanet candidates. In our model, the rotation of the planet is disturbed by the torque of the central star due to the asymmetric equilibrium figure of the planet. We model the shape of the planet by a Jeans spheroid. We use surfaces of section and spectral analysis to explore numerically the rotation phase space of the systems adopting different sets of parameters and initial conditions close to the main spin-orbit resonant states. One of the parameters, the orbital eccentricity, is critically discussed here within the domain of validity of orbital circularization timescales given by tidal models. We show that, depending on some parameters of the system like the radius and mass of the planet, eccentricity etc, the rotation can be strongly perturbed and a chaotic layer around the synchronous state may occupy a significant region of the phase space. 55 Cnc e is an example.Comment: In Press. Un modelo dicotómico de agresión y su evaluación mediante dos autoinformes: el CAMA y el RPQ

    Get PDF
The present paper shows the inherent complexity of classifying aggression not only because this construct is already ambiguous in itself and presents various dimensions and shades, but also because researchers and specialists in this field use their own concepts and typology of aggression which could make reference to the some epistemological reality but naming it in a different way. With this intention in mind, we describe the different types of aggression that specialists in this field have been offering to the scientific community during the last decades. Starting with the awareness of this complexity, we offer a dichotomic model of aggression fundamentally based on the analysis of the basic motivation of the aggressor. According to this perspective, the aggressive behaviours manifested in the different community settings, could polarize in two basic structures: reactive and proactive. To this, we sum the psychopatho(bio)logical correlates which support these two dimensions, as well as the utility of the self-reports in order to analyse the hidden motivation of the aggressor using two different inventories: (CAMA y RPQ). Finally, we question the usefulness of this theoretical model to shed light on the motivation of aggressive behavior through different self-report instruments

Association between sleep-disordered breathing and breast cancer aggressiveness

    Get PDF
Background Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) has been associated with cancer aggressiveness, but studies focused on specific tumors are lacking. In this pilot study we investigated whether SDB is associated with breast cancer (BC) aggressiveness. Methods 83 consecutive women <65 years diagnosed with primary BC underwent a home respiratory polygraphy. Markers of SDB severity included the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and the 4% oxygen desaturation index (ODI4). The Ki67 proliferation index, lack of hormone receptors (HR-), Nottingham Histological Grade (NHG), and tumor stage were used as markers of BC aggressiveness. The association between SDB and molecular subtypes of BC was also assessed. Results The mean (SD) age was 48.8 (8.8) years and body mass index was 27.4 (5.4) Kg/m2. 42 women (50.6%) were post-menopausal. The median (IQR) AHI was 5.1 (2–9.4), and ODI4 was 1.5 (0.5–5.8). The median (IQR) AHI did not differ between the groups with Ki67>28% and Ki6728% and Ki67<29% (51.2% vs 52.3%, p = 0.90), HR- and HR+ (58.3% vs 49.1%, p = 0.47), NHG categories (p = 0.89), different tumor stages (p = 0.71), or molecular subtypes (p = 0.73). These results did not change when the ODI4 was used instead of the AHI. Conclusion Our results do not support an association between the presence or severity of SDB and BC aggressiveness.Asociación de Neumología y Cirugía Torácica del Sur (NEUMOSUR) 1/201

Genetic Algorithm for Arbitrage with More than Three Currencies

    Get PDF
We develop a genetic algorithm that is able to find the optimal sequence of exchange rates that maximizes arbitrage profits with more than three currencies, being both the triangular arbitrage and the direct exchange rate two special cases of the proposed algorithm. Applying the algorithm to the most traded currencies, we find average profits ranking from 4.5083% to 0.3162% for changing 1 USD for EUR with respect to the direct exchange rate, for different transaction costs, during the period October 2000-April 2012. Our results also suggest that the arbitrage profits increased just after the subprime crisis in summer of 2007 and that they are higher when the market is less liquid

Detecting trends in the foreign exchange markets

    Get PDF
We test for the existence of trends in exchange-rate series for 95 currencies against the US dollar. To that end, we make use of Taylor’s (1980) price trend model that, instead of focusing on the mean reverting behaviour of exchange rates measured over a long horizon, concentrates on the shortterm pattern of the price trend. Employing a maximum likelihood method and a genetic algorithm to estimate the model parameters, in 39 of the 95 cases considered we find evidence in favour of the presence of trends, the trends being more frequent in intermediate exchange-rate regimes

Exploiting trends in the foreign exchange markets

We offer further evidence on the relevance of technical trading in exchangerate markets using daily data for 95 currencies against the US dollar. To that end, we investigate the profitability of a simple technical trading rule based on Taylor’s (1980) price trend model, generating optimal one-stepahead forecasts of returns using genetic algorithms. These trading rules, that bear similarity to the popular trading rules based on moving averages, overcome the buy-and-hold strategy in 25 of 39 cases where trends are detected, even in the presence of transaction costs

Wrapping Effects within a Proposed Function-Rescue Strategy for the Y220C Oncogenic Mutation of Protein p53

    Get PDF
Soluble proteins must protect their structural integrity from water attack by wrapping interactions which imply the clustering of nonpolar residues around the backbone hydrogen bonds. Thus, poorly wrapped hydrogen bonds constitute defects which have been identified as promoters of protein associations since they favor the removal of hydrating molecules. More specifically, a recent study of our group has shown that wrapping interactions allow the successful identification of protein binding hot spots. Additionally, we have also shown that drugs disruptive of protein-protein interfaces tend to mimic the wrapping behavior of the protein they replace. Within this context, in this work we study wrapping three body interactions related to the oncogenic Y220C mutation of the tumor suppressor protein p53. Our computational results rationalize the oncogenic nature of the Y220C mutation, explain the binding of a drug-like molecule already designed to restore the function of p53 and provide clues to help improve this function-rescue strategy and to apply in other drug design or re-engineering techniques.Fil: Accordino, Sebastián Roberto.
