    Motion limitations of non-contact photoplethysmography due to the optical and topological properties of skin

    Non-contact photoplethysmography (PPG) provides multiple benefits over in-contact methods, but is not as tolerant to motion due to the lack of mechanical coupling between the subject and sensor. One limitation of non-contact photoplethysmography is discussed here, specifically looking at the topology and optical variations of the skin and how this impacts upon the ability to extract a photoplethysmogram when a subject moves horizontally across the field of view of the detector (a panning motion). When this occurs it is shown that whilst the general relationships between the speed of traversal, detection area and resultant signal quality can be found, the quality of signal in each individual case is determined by the properties of the area of skin chosen

    Prioritization of knowledge-needs to achieve best practices for bottom trawling in relation to seabed habitats

    Management and technical approaches that achieve a sustainable level of fish production while at the same time minimizing or limiting the wider ecological effects caused through fishing gear contact with the seabed might be considered to be ‘best practice’. To identify future knowledge-needs that would help to support a transition towards the adoption of best practices for trawling, a prioritization exercise was undertaken with a group of 39 practitioners from the seafood industry and management, and 13 research scientists who have an active research interest in bottom-trawl and dredge fisheries. A list of 108 knowledge-needs related to trawl and dredge fisheries was developed in conjunction with an ‘expert task force’. The long list was further refined through a three stage process of voting and scoring, including discussions of each knowledge-need. The top 25 knowledge-needs are presented, as scored separately by practitioners and scientists. There was considerable consistency in the priorities identified by these two groups. The top priority knowledge-need to improve current understanding on the distribution and extent of different habitat types also reinforced the concomitant need for the provision and access to data on the spatial and temporal distribution of all forms of towed bottom-fishing activities. Many of the other top 25 knowledge-needs concerned the evaluation of different management approaches or implementation of different fishing practices, particularly those that explore trade-offs between effects of bottom trawling on biodiversity and ecosystem services and the benefits of fish production as food.Fil: Kaiser, Michel J..     Light path-length distributions within the retina

    A Monte Carlo simulation of light propagation through the retina has been developed to understand the path-length distributions within the retinal vessel. For full-field illumination, the path-length distribution within the vessel comprises directly backscattered light and light that has passed once or twice through the vessel. The origins of these light path-length distributions can be better understood by investigating different combinations of single-point illumination and detection positions. Perhaps the most significant observation is that illumination at the edges of the vessel, rather than over the whole field of view, and detection directly above the vessel capture only the light that has taken a single pass through the vessel. This path-length distribution is tightly constrained around the diameter of the vessel and can potentially provide enhancements for oxygen saturation imaging. The method could be practically implemented using an offset-pinhole confocal imaging system or structured light illumination

    Apesar dos propósitos da 'nova' saúde pública e da sua ênfase na promoção da saúde como investimento na autonomia do 'público' para tomadas de decisão sobre saúde, através da intervenção nos seus condicionantes estruturais, a educação em saúde permanece, geralmente, centrada na responsabilização individual e na prevenção de doenças. O artigo problematiza essas questões apresentando as propostas da promoção da saúde, surgida, na década de 70, como principal estratégia da chamada 'nova saúde pública'. Apoiado em uma revisão da literatura, categorizada segundo os temas de interesse para a problematização pretendida, o artigo analisa, também, a aplicação dessas propostas no campo da educação em saúde. A justificativa para a busca na literatura de um embasamento que respondesse por essa análise está na relevância das temáticas tratadas para a prática da enfermagem e na restrita produção de abordagens teóricas sobre a promoção da e a educação em saúde por parte das enfermeiras.<br>A pesar de que las propuestas de la 'nueva salud pública' enfatizan la noción de promoción de la salud como inversión en la autonomía del 'público' y argumentan en favor de la centralidad de las condiciones sociales en la determinación de la salud, la educación en salud permanece, generalmente, centralizada en la responsabilidad individual y en la prevención de enfermedades. Este artículo levanta esas cuestiones, presentando las propuestas de la promoción de la salud, surgida en la década del 70 como principal estrategia de la llamada 'nueva salud pública'. Apoyado en una revisión de la literatura, clasificada de acuerdo con los intereses del levantamiento pretendido, el artículo analiza, también, la aplicación de esas propuestas en el campo de la educación en salud. La justificativa para buscar en la literatura una fundamentación que dé cuenta de este análisis está centrada en la relevancia de las temáticas tratadas para la práctica de la enfermería y en la restricta producci��n de aproximaciones teóricas sobre la promoción de la salud y la educación en salud por parte de las enfermeras.<br>In spite of the goals of 'new' public health and its emphasis on health promotion as an investment in the autonomy of the 'public' to make decisions on health, by means of interventions in its structural conditioning factors, health education in general remains focused on individual responsibility and disease prevention. The article discusses these issues, presenting the main proposals of health promotion that emerged in the 70's as the main strategy of the so-called 'new public health'. Based on a literature review, categorized according to the themes of interest for the proposed discussion, the article also analyzes the use of these proposals in the field of health education. The literature search for a theoretical background to support this analysis is justified by the relevance of the discussed issues for nursing practice and the limited production of theoretical approaches about health promotion and health education by nurses
