During 30 years, China has stand out over other countries due to the accelerated growth process that it has been presenting, also for having an emergent economy with the highest foreign investment indicators which allow the country to count with a dynamic international trade. But all this success is not for free; to accomplish a rapid growth, this country had to take some special measures like the creation of technological and economic development zones, industrial parks, between others that permit China to be an attractive country for foreigners. But even though the country is achieving its main economical objective; the situation China is living today in the interior of the coun¬try, makes all the economical efforts worthless. The majority of income resulting from direct foreign investment and trade is only staying in the hands of few people and the gaps between urban and rural zones are getting bigger by the day, situa¬tion that impulses migration at a scandalous growing rates. There is also a lack of work regulations which result in multinationals augmenting their greed of earning more money by reducing costs at the expense of scarifying their employees´ right of counting with a safe and healthy work environment

Ca-Mg silicates are receiving a growing interest in the field of bioceramics. In a previous study, wollastonite-diopside (WD) glass-ceramics were successfully prepared by a new processing route, consisting of the heat treatment of a silicone resin embedding reactive oxide particles and a Ca/Mg-rich glass. The in vitro degradation, bioactivity, and cell response of these new WD glass-ceramics, fired at 900\u20131100 \ub0C for 1 h, as a function of the Ca/Mg-rich glass content, are the aim of this investigation The results showed that WD glass-ceramics from formulations comprising different glass contents (70\u2013100% at 900 \ub0C, 30% at 1100 \ub0C) exhibit the formation of an apatite-like layer on their surface after immersion in SBF for seven days, thus confirming their surface bioactivity. The XRD results showed that these samples crystallized, mainly forming wollastonite (CaSiO3) and diopside (CaMgSi2O6), but combeite (Na2Ca2Si3O9) crystalline phase was also detected. Besides in vitro bioactivity, cytotoxicity and osteoblast adhesion and proliferation tests were applied after all characterizations, and the formulation comprising 70% glass was demonstrated to be promising for further in vivo studies

Background. The revised Oxford classification of diagnostic renal biopsies has been proposed to aid in the prediction of renal outcome. We aimed to validate the histological crescents and interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (IFTA) subgrouping, and to investigate the additional value of the proportion of crescents (CatPE) in the prediction of renal outcome. Methods. Data were retrospectively collected over 10 years, from the time of diagnosis, by systematic review of medical records from 90 patients with renal biopsies recruited to cohorts from two hospitals in Spain. Patients were classified into three groups for the analysis: CatPE >25% (C2), CatPE 50% reduction in glomerular filtrate rate or end-stage renal disease. Results. Renal survival at 5 years was 90% in group C0, 81% in group C1 and 31% in group C2 (P 1⁄4 0.013). The presence of >25% crescents in the sample was associated with more severe disease when compared with 50% had poorer renal function compared with the other groups. Conclusions. We have confirmed the predictive value for renal survival of the revised Oxford classification in a two-centre study. We found worse renal outcome in patients with severe tubulointerstitial fibrosis and atrophy. Patients with extracapillary lesions >25% and IFTA >50% had a worse renal prognosis due to more severe kidney injury. These results contribute to patient stratification in immunoglobulin A nephropathy for therapeutic, epidemiological and basic research

Decree 117 from Resolution 412 establishes the procedures to be followed for diseases that are of public interest, such as malnutrition. Objective: evaluate compliance and use of the guide for the treatment of malnourished, an initiative begun by the head office for promotion of the social protection ministry. Methodology: A descriptive transversal study was carried out in a health center in Cali, Colombia. It included 17 clinical histories of malnourished children with age 0 to 10. Results: A total of 17 clinical histories were reviewed: 41.2% were children 0-2 years old, 58.8% were older than 2 years old. 52.9% were females and 47.1% were males. All the clinical histories of the children less than 2 years old included weight-age, height-age and weight-height. For the children older than 2 years old all the histories had weigh–age, height-age; only 10% included the BMI. Biochemistry tests carried out were in 47.1% of the cases CBC and TSH, 5.9 % had a creatinine test. Only 23.5% had stool studies. 100% of the histories lacked total protein tests, T3 and T4, Transferrin, ureic nitrogen and growth hormone tests. Professional healthcare is provided by a physician and a nursing assistant; 100% of the follow-up is done by the nursing assistant. The children are not seen or monitored by a nutritionist. Conclusions: The Basic Care Guide for Malnutrition is not being totally complied by the Health Services.

In this article, we reflect on inherited hierarchies from modernity/coloniality, as conceptual axes allowing to argue in favor of the transdisciplinarity in social sciences. This approach overcomes dichotomous perspectives and achieves more holistic readings of our reality, aiming at facing societal challenges brought by the pandemic. Drawing on a latinoamericanist, feminist and decolonial perspective, we study what happened during the first months after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Latin American region. First, we address the hierarchy between the productive and the reproductive, that has been decisive in the course of the pandemic. Then, we will analyze the detachment between humans and nature resulting from a complex setting of socio-environmental causes of the pandemic, which can only be explained by a transdisciplinary approach. Thus, we question the constitutive hierarchy of the current scientific system that gives primacy to modern/colonial reasoning over other knowledges. Furthermore, we examine the political situation in the region, based on the false dichotomy between safeguarding life or rescuing the economy. Finally, we present some preliminary conclusions.

Evolving trends in the management of acute appendicitis during COVID-19 waves. The ACIE appy II study

    Get PDF
Background: In 2020, ACIE Appy study showed that COVID-19 pandemic heavily affected the management of patients with acute appendicitis (AA) worldwide, with an increased rate of non-operative management (NOM) strategies and a trend toward open surgery due to concern of virus transmission by laparoscopy and controversial recommendations on this issue. The aim of this study was to survey again the same group of surgeons to assess if any difference in management attitudes of AA had occurred in the later stages of the outbreak. Methods: From August 15 to September 30, 2021, an online questionnaire was sent to all 709 participants of the ACIE Appy study. The questionnaire included questions on personal protective equipment (PPE), local policies and screening for SARS-CoV-2 infection, NOM, surgical approach and disease presentations in 2021. The results were compared with the results from the previous study. Results: A total of 476 answers were collected (response rate 67.1%). Screening policies were significatively improved with most patients screened regardless of symptoms (89.5% vs. 37.4%) with PCR and antigenic test as the preferred test (74.1% vs. 26.3%). More patients tested positive before surgery and commercial systems were the preferred ones to filter smoke plumes during laparoscopy. Laparoscopic appendicectomy was the first option in the treatment of AA, with a declined use of NOM. Conclusion: Management of AA has improved in the last waves of pandemic. Increased evidence regarding SARS-COV-2 infection along with a timely healthcare systems response has been translated into tailored attitudes and a better care for patients with AA worldwide
