    Geometric evaluation of stiffened steel plates subjected to transverse loading for naval and offshore applications

    This work searched for the optimal geometrical configuration of simply supported stiffened plates subjected to a transverse and uniformly distributed load. From a non-stiffened reference plate, different geometrical configurations of stiffened plates, with the same volume as the reference plate, were defined through the constructal design method. Thus, applying the exhaustive search technique and using the ANSYS software, the mechanical behaviors of all the suggested stiffened plates were compared to each other to find the geometrical configuration that provided the minimum deflection in the plate's center when subjected to this loading. The optimum geometrical configuration of stiffeners is presented at the end of this work, allowing a reduction of 98.57% for the central deflection of the stiffened plate if compared to the reference plate. Furthermore, power equations were adjusted to describe the deflections for each combination of longitudinal and transverse stiffeners as a function of the ratio between the height and the thickness of the stiffeners. Finally, a unique equation for determining the central deflections of the studied stiffened plates based only on the number of longitudinal stiffeners without significantly losing accuracy has been proposed

    The Dark Matter Density in the Solar Neighborhood reconsidered

    Both the gas flaring and the dip in the rotation curve, which was recently reconfirmed with precise measurements using the VERA VLBI array in Japan, suggest doughnut-like substructure in the dark matter (DM) halo. A global fit to all available data shows that the data are indeed best described by an NFW DM profile complemented by two doughnut-like DM substructures with radii of 4.2 and 12.4 kpc, which coincide with the local dust ring and the Monocerus ring of stars, respectively. Both regions have been suggested as regions with tidal streams from "shredded" satellites. If real, the radial extensions of these nearby ringlike structures enhance the local dark matter density by a factor of four to about 1.3±0.3\pm0.3 GeV/cm3^3. It is shown that i) this higher DM density is perfectly consistent with the local gravitational potential determining the surface density and the local matter density (Oort limit), ii) previous determinations of the surface density were biased by the assumption of a smoothly varying DM halo and iii) the s-shaped gas flaring is explained. Such a possible enhancement of the local DM density is of great interest for direct DM searches and would change the directional dependence for indirect DM searches.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, extended version, accepted for publication in JCA

    Seleção genômica ampla para curvas de crescimento

    Foi proposta uma metodologia para avaliação genética de curvas de crescimento considerando-se informações de marcadores SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms). Em um primeiro passo foram ajustados modelos de crescimento não lineares (logístico) aos dados de peso-idade de cada animal, e em um segundo passo as estimativas dos parâmetros de tais modelos foram consideradas como fenótipos em um modelo de regressão (LASSO Bayesiano – BL) cujas covariáveis foram os genótipos dos marcadores SNPs. Este enfoque possibilitou estimar os valores genéticos genômicos (GBV) para peso em qualquer tempo da trajetória de crescimento, refletindo na confecção de curvas de crescimento genômicas, as quais permitiram a identificação de grupos de indivíduos geneticamente superiores em relação à eficiência de crescimento. Os dados simulados utilizados neste estudo foram constituídos de 2000 indivíduos (1000 na população de treinamento e 1000 na população de validação) contendo 453 marcadores SNPs distribuídos sobre cinco cromossomos. Os resultados indicaram a alta eficiência do método BL em predizer GBVs da população de validação com base na população de treinamento (coeficientes de correlação variaram entre 0,79 e 0,93), bem como a alta eficiência na detecção de QTLs, uma vez que os marcadores com maiores efeitos estimados encontravam-se em posições dos cromossomos próximas àquelas nas quais se encontravam os verdadeiros QTLs postulados na simulação.A methodology was proposed for the genetic evaluation of growth curves considering SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) markers. At the first step, nonlinear regression growth models (Logistic) were fitted to the weight-age of each animal, and on second step the parameter estimates of the Logistic model were used as phenotype in a regression model (Bayesian LASSO - BL) which covariates were given by SNP genotypes. This approach allows the estimation of GBV (Genomic Breeding Values) for weight at either time of growth trajectory, allowing also the production of genomic growth curves, which selected groups of individuals with larger growth efficiency. The simulated data set was constituted of 2,000 individuals (being 1,000 in the training and 1,000 in the validation population) each one with 453 SNP markers distributed along 5 chromosomes. The results indicated high efficiency of the BL method to predict GBV in the validation population using information from the training population (correlation coefficients varying between 0.79 and 0.93). The BL also presented high efficiency to detect QTL, once the most expressive estimated SNP effects were located at positions closed to true QTL position fixed in the simulation

    Quality control in blood irradiation

    Irradiation is a technique used in hemotherapy to functionally inactivateviable lymphocytes, in cellular blood components, to reduce the risk of Transfusion-associated Graft-versus-Host Disease (AT-GVHD), is rare but letal. One way to avoid it is to irradiate blood componentes in situations such as: intrauterine transfusion, newborns, patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy in bone marrow transplantation. Thus, it is extremely important that blood component is irradiated and, above all, ensure that the minimum dose is 25 Gy.The blood policy in Brazil is implemented through laws and normative decrees, giving rise to a legal system that underpins the actions of hemotherapy services. In order to correct verify absorbed doses and the quality assurance process as well as the safety for the irradiator operators we describe in this paper a several of physical measurements that is mandatory to support a physicist to evaluate the quality assurance during and after the irradiation process. The results obtained from this physical measurements  provided a guarantee of proper radiation dose used in hemotherapy as well as methods and procedures applied to protect the patient, employees and general public due to procedure of blood irradiation accordling the Technical Regulation of Hemotherapy Procedures of the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) and safety regulations by National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN)

    Antimicrobial Activity of the Extract of Stem Bark of Diplotropis Ferruginea Benth

    This is the first report about the antibacterial activity of Diplotropis ferruginea Benth. In this study, the ethanol extract of D. ferruginea was tested for its antimicrobial activity against strains gram-positive and gram-negative. In order to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration, assays were carried out by micro dilution method. The extract was screened for antimicrobial activity, and it showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

    Calibration of the Transport Parameters of a Local Problem of Water Quality in Igap\'o I Lake

    The calibration of a model refers to the process by which one can estimate some parameters by comparisons with observed data. Due to the dynamical nature of the environment, variations between predicted and observed values occur. Thus, the environmental parameters may vary due to random temperature changes, time of discharge flow, time of the day, and other conditions. Such variations can be minimized by identifying and optimizing some parameters of the transport model, like the values of diffusion coefficients in x and y directions and the kinetic parameter that describes the process of removing pollutants. This paper presents results concerning the calibration of transport parameters for two-dimensional problems of water quality (fecal coliform control) at Igap\'o I Lake, located in Londrina, Paran\'a, Brazil.     Horizontal Branch Stars: The Interplay between Observations and Theory, and Insights into the Formation of the Galaxy

    We review HB stars in a broad astrophysical context, including both variable and non-variable stars. A reassessment of the Oosterhoff dichotomy is presented, which provides unprecedented detail regarding its origin and systematics. We show that the Oosterhoff dichotomy and the distribution of globular clusters (GCs) in the HB morphology-metallicity plane both exclude, with high statistical significance, the possibility that the Galactic halo may have formed from the accretion of dwarf galaxies resembling present-day Milky Way satellites such as Fornax, Sagittarius, and the LMC. A rediscussion of the second-parameter problem is presented. A technique is proposed to estimate the HB types of extragalactic GCs on the basis of integrated far-UV photometry. The relationship between the absolute V magnitude of the HB at the RR Lyrae level and metallicity, as obtained on the basis of trigonometric parallax measurements for the star RR Lyrae, is also revisited, giving a distance modulus to the LMC of (m-M)_0 = 18.44+/-0.11.
