Pioneer Venus spacecraft charging model
Five environmental models were constructed to represent the solar wind and the upper, middle, and lower ionosphere of Venus. The spacecraft structure was modeled with over 140 passive electrical elements representing structural elements of the spacecraft. Electron, ion, secondary electron, and photocurrents to the spacecraft from the plasma were calculated, ignoring sheath effects. In all but one case, potentials of interest were less than 1 volt. Potential differences between widely separated points on the equipment shelf were less than 1 mV. The one area of concern is the solar panel potential when the orbiter is passing through the bowshock region

Plant root proliferation in nitrogen-rich patches confers competitive advantage
Plants respond to environmental heterogeneity, particularly below ground, where spectacular root proliferations in nutrient-rich patches may occur. Such 'foraging' responses apparently maximize nutrient uptake and are now prominent in plant ecological theory. Proliferations in nitrogen-rich patches are difficult to explain adaptively, however. The high mobility of soil nitrate should limit the contribution of proliferation to N capture. Many experiments on isolated plants show only a weak relation between proliferation and N uptake. We show that N capture is associated strongly with proliferation during interspecific competition for finite, locally available, mixed N sources, precisely the conditions under which N becomes available to plants on generally infertile soils. This explains why N-induced root proliferation is an important resource-capture mechanism in N-limited plant communities and suggests that increasing proliferation by crop breeding or genetic manipulation will have a limited impact on N capture by well-fertilized monocultures
Object orientation without extending Z
The good news of this paper is that without extending Z,
we can elegantly specify object-oriented systems, including encapsulation,
inheritance and subtype polymorphism (dynamic dispatch). The
bad news is that this specification style is rather different to normal
Z specifications, more abstract and axiomatic, which means that it is
not so well supported by current Z tools such as animators. It also enforces
behavioural subtyping, unlike most object-oriented programming
languages. This paper explains the proposed style, with examples, and
discusses its advantages and disadvantages
Faint Radio Sources and Star Formation History
Faint extragalactic radio sources provide important information about the
global history of star formation. Sensitive radio observations of the Hubble
Deep Field and other fields have found that sub-mJy radio sources are
predominantly associated with star formation activity rather than AGN. Radio
observations of star forming galaxies have the advantage of being independent
of extinction by dust. We use the FIR-radio correlation to compare the radio
and FIR backgrounds, and make several conclusions about the star forming
galaxies producing the FIR background. We then use the redshift distribution of
faint radio sources to determine the evolution of the radio luminosity
function, and thus estimate the star formation density as a function of
redshift.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, latex using texas.sty, to appear in the CD-ROM

Some exact solutions with torsion in 5-D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity
Exact solutions with torsion in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity are derived.
These solutions have a cross product structure of two constant curvature
manifolds. The equations of motion give a relation for the coupling constants
of the theory in order to have solutions with nontrivial torsion. This relation
is not the Chern-Simons combination. One of the solutions has a structure and is so the purely gravitational analogue of the
Bertotti-Robinson space-time where the torsion can be seen as the dual of the
covariantly constant electromagnetic field.Comment: 19 pages, LaTex, no figures. References added, notation clarified.

Heun equation, Teukolsky equation, and type-D metrics
Starting with the whole class of type-D vacuum backgrounds with cosmological
constant we show that the separated Teukolsky equation for zero rest-mass
fields with spin (gravitational waves), (electromagnetic
waves) and (neutrinos) is an Heun equation in disguise.Comment: 27 pages, corrected typo in eq. (1

A genome-wide association study reveals specific transferases as candidate loci for bovine milk oligosaccharides synthesis.
BackgroundHuman milk oligosaccharides (OS) play a key role in brain and gut microbiota development of the neonate, but the underlying biosynthetic steps of OS in the mammary gland are still largely unknown. As bovine milk contains OS with somewhat similar structures and functionalities there is increased interest in further understanding the genetic basis underlying the OS content of milk for eventual extraction and generation of value-added ingredients for infant formulas and nutraceuticals. The present study is the first to report on genetic parameter estimation as well as on a genome wide association study (GWAS) from the largest bovine milk OS dataset analyzed to date.ResultsIn total 15 different bovine milk OS were monitored. Heritabilities ranged from 0 to 0.68 in Danish Holstein and from 0 to 0.92 in Danish Jersey. The GWAS identified in total 1770 SNPs (FDRā<ā0.10) for five different OS in Danish Holstein and 6913 SNPs (FDRā<ā0.10) for 11 OS in Danish Jersey. In Danish Holstein, a major overlapping QTL was identified on BTA1 for LNH and LNT explaining 24% of the variation in these OS. The most significant SNPs were associated with B3GNT5, a gene encoding a glycosyltransferase involved in glycan synthesis. In Danish Jersey, a very strong QTL was detected for the OS with composition 2 Hex 1 HexNAc (isomer 1) on BTA11. The most significant SNP had -log10(P-value) of 52.88 (BOVINEHD1100030300) and was assigned to ABO, a gene encoding ABO blood group glycosyltransferases. This SNP has been reported to be a missense mutation and explains 56% of the OS variation. Other candidate genes of interest identified for milk OS were ALG3, B3GALNT2, LOC520336, PIGV, MAN1C1, ST6GALNAC6, GLT6D1, GALNT14, GALNT17, COLGALT2, LFNG and SIGLEC.ConclusionTo our knowledge, this is the first study documenting a solid breeding potential for bovine milk OS and a strong indication of specific candidate genes related to OS synthesis underlying this genetic influence. This new information has the potential to guide breeding strategies to achieve production of milk with higher diversity and concentration of OS and ultimately facilitate large-scale extraction of bovine milk OS
