Simultaneous capacitance and amperometric measurements of exocytosis: a comparison
We measured the exocytotic response induced by flash photolysis of caged compounds in isolated mast cells and chromaffin cells. Vesicle fusion was measured by monitoring the cell membrane capacitance. The release of vesicular contents was followed by amperometry. In response to a GTP gamma S stimulus we found that the time integral of the amperometric current could be superimposed on the capacitance trace. This shows that the integrated amperometric signal provides an alternative method of measuring the extent and kinetics of the secretory response. Very different results were obtained when photolysis of caged Ca2+ (DM-nitrophen) was used to stimulate secretion. In mast cells, there was an immediate, graded increase in membrane capacitance that was followed by step increases (indicative of granule fusion). During the initial phase of the capacitance increases, no release of oxidizable secretory products was detected. In chromaffin cells we also observed a considerable delay between increases in capacitance, triggered by uncaging Ca2+, and the release of oxidizable secretory products. Here we demonstrate that there can be large increases in the membrane capacitance of a secretory cell, triggered by flash photolysis of DM-nitrophen, which indicate events that are not due to the fusion of granules containing oxidizable substances. These results show that increases in capacitance that are not resolved as steps cannot be readily interpreted as secretory events unless they are confirmed independently
Quantum dot emission from site-controlled ngan/gan micropyramid arrays
InxGa1âxN quantum dots have been fabricated by the selective growth of GaN micropyramid arrays topped with InGaN/GaN quantum wells. The spatially, spectrally, and time-resolved emission properties of these structures were measured using cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging and low-temperature microphotoluminescence spectroscopy. The presence of InGaN quantum dots was confirmed directly by the observation of sharp peaks in the emission spectrum at the pyramid apices. Detection of NMR signals with a radio-frequency atomic magnetometer
We demonstrate detection of proton NMR signals with a radio frequency atomic
magnetometer tuned to the NMR frequency of 62 kHz. High-frequency operation of
the atomic magnetometer makes it relatively insensitive to ambient magnetic
field noise. We obtain magnetic field sensitivity of 7 fT/Hz using only
a thin aluminum shield. We also derive an expression for the fundamental
sensitivity limit of a surface inductive pick-up coil as a function of
frequency and find that an atomic rf magnetometer is intrinsically more
sensitive than a coil of comparable size for frequencies below about 50 MHz.Comment: 7 page
An alternative approach to the construction of Schur-Weyl transform
We propose an alternative approach for the construction of the unitary matrix
which performs generalized unitary rotations of the system consisting of
independent identical subsystems (for example spin system). This matrix, when
applied to the system, results in a change of degrees of freedom, uncovering
the information hidden in non-local degrees of freedom. This information can be
used, inter alia, to study the structure of entangled states, their
classification and may be useful for construction of quantum algorithms.Comment: 6 page

Environmental DNA reveals fine-scale spatial and temporal variation of marine mammals and their prey species in a Scottish marine protected area
Marine mammal foraging grounds are popular focal points for marine protected area (MPA) implementation, despite being temporally dynamic, requiring continuous monitoring to infer prey availability and abundance. Marine mammal distributions are assumed to be driven by their prey in foraging areas, but limited understanding of prey distributions often prevents us from exploring how shifting prey availability impacts both seasonal and long-term marine mammal distributions. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding could enhance the understanding of marine mammal habitat use in relation to their prey through simultaneous monitoring of both. However, eDNA applications focused on marine mammals or predatorâprey dynamics have been limited to date. In this study, we assess spatiotemporal changes in the distribution and abundance of cetaceans, minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in relation to key prey species in a newly established MPA, employing eDNA metabarcoding. We recovered 105 molecular operational taxonomic units (OTUs) from marine vertebrates using two primer sets targeting 12S and 16S genes, along with 112 OTUs from a broader eukaryotic primer set targeting 18S rRNA. Overall, key forage fish prey species, sandeels and clupeids, were the most abundant teleost fishes detected, although their availability varied temporally and with distance from shore. We also found clear spatial partitioning between coastal bottlenose dolphins and the more pelagic minke whales and harbor porpoises, paralleling availability of their main prey species. Other species of conservation interest were also detected including the critically endangered European eel (Anguilla anguilla), Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), and the invasive pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha). This study demonstrates the application of eDNA to detect spatiotemporal trends in the occurrence and abundance of cetacean predators and their prey, furthering our understanding of fine-scale habitat use within MPAs. Future long-term monitoring of predatorâprey dynamics with eDNA could improve our ability to predict climate-induced shifts in foraging grounds and enhance rapid responses with appropriate management actions
Population dynamics in compressible flows
Organisms often grow, migrate and compete in liquid environments, as well as
on solid surfaces. However, relatively little is known about what happens when
competing species are mixed and compressed by fluid turbulence. In these
lectures we review our recent work on population dynamics and population
genetics in compressible velocity fields of one and two dimensions. We discuss
why compressible turbulence is relevant for population dynamics in the ocean
and we consider cases both where the velocity field is turbulent and when it is
static. Furthermore, we investigate populations in terms of a continuos density
field and when the populations are treated via discrete particles. In the last
case we focus on the competition and fixation of one species compared to

Quantum Tomography under Prior Information
We provide a detailed analysis of the question: how many measurement settings
or outcomes are needed in order to identify a quantum system which is
constrained by prior information? We show that if the prior information
restricts the system to a set of lower dimensionality, then topological
obstructions can increase the required number of outcomes by a factor of two
over the number of real parameters needed to characterize the system.
Conversely, we show that almost every measurement becomes informationally
complete with respect to the constrained set if the number of outcomes exceeds
twice the Minkowski dimension of the set. We apply the obtained results to
determine the minimal number of outcomes of measurements which are
informationally complete with respect to states with rank constraints. In
particular, we show that 4d-4 measurement outcomes (POVM elements) is enough in
order to identify all pure states in a d-dimensional Hilbert space, and that

The African warlord revisited
To date, warlordism in Africa has been viewed solely negatively. This has come about, in part, because of the analytical lenses that have been used. Typically, warlordism has been examined at the state level; and behavioural traits, rather than definitionally necessary components, have been the focus. In effect, âwarlordâ has been confused with other violent actors. I suggest here a reconceptualisation âfrom belowâ, which takes into account variation in types of warlordism, and which allows for both positive and negative effects of warlordism on society and the state
Effects of red grape, wild grape and black raspberry wines on ground pork during refrigerated storage
The effects of red grape, wild grape and black raspberry wines on the quality of ground pork during a 15 days refrigerated storage period were investigated. The levels of phenolic compounds were the highest in black raspberry wine (P0.05). The addition of 5% and 10% wine influenced the quality of ground pork by decreasing pH, inhibiting the progression of lipid oxidation and the formation of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and stabilizing the red colour of the ground pork compared to control samples to which no wine was added. In ground pork, addition of red grape wine led to lower concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS, 0.19â0.39 mg kgâ1) and TVB-N values (69.1â119.9 mg kgâ1) than wild grape (0.16â0.43 mg kgâ1 and 72.0â194.1 mg kgâ1, respectively) or black raspberry wine (0.33â0.58 mg kgâ1 and 81.7â225.4 mg kgâ1, respectively) up to 10 days of storage. Results from the present study suggested that the quality of ground pork was affected by wine type and storage period. These effects could be due to phenolic compounds as well as other chemical components of the wines
