    Marine environmental monitoring programmes in South Africa: a review

    South Africa uniquely lies at the junction of two major currents, the Agulhas and the Benguela. The waters overlying the continental shelf exhibit exceptionally high short-, medium- and long-term (days to inter-decadal) variability compared with most other shelf areas, and strongly contrasting oceanographic conditions are observed on the east and west coasts. South Africa is rich in fisheries resources and associated environmental data collected over more than a century. The South African marine scientific community has a history of multidisciplinary studies of marine foodwebs, from the driving forces such as wind, currents and solar heating, to the top predators, with the development of kelp bed, sub-tidal reefs and estuarine ecosystem studies in the 1970s; the Benguela Ecology Programme, which ran through four successive five-year stages, focused on the pelagic marine resources. Various approaches have been used to observe the continental shelf at different time and space scales, including: macroscale but frequent satellite imagery, mesoscale environmental and fishery surveys, dedicated crossshelf transects in key areas, measurements of dynamic processes, use of moored buoys and coastal weather stations, and integrated monitoring approaches, including modelling and simulation studies. Between 30 and 50 years of comprehensive marine data now exist, which are proving useful in the application of an ecosystem approach to fisheries monitoring and management, as decadal changes become discernible. These observations need to continue; even though the single-species stock assessment and operational management procedures have not yet formally used environmental factors for fisheries management advice, they help us to understand the factors affecting fish population fluctuations and early life histories and to identify large-scale regime shifts where marine trophic structure and functioning alter to a new state

    PTH(1–34) treatment and/or mechanical loading have different osteogenic effects on the trabecular and cortical bone in the ovariectomized C57BL/6 mouse

    In preclinical mouse models, a synergistic anabolic response to PTH(1–34) and tibia loading was shown. Whether combined treatment improves bone properties with oestrogen deficiency, a cardinal feature of osteoporosis, remains unknown. This study quantified the individual and combined longitudinal effects of PTH(1–34) and loading on the bone morphometric and densitometric properties in ovariectomised mice. C57BL/6 mice were ovariectomised at 14-weeks-old and treated either with injections of PTH(1–34); compressive loading of the right tibia; both interventions concurrently; or both interventions on alternating weeks. Right tibiae were microCT-scanned from 14 until 24-weeks-old. Trabecular metaphyseal and cortical midshaft morphometric properties, and bone mineral content (BMC) in 40 different regions of the tibia were measured. Mice treated only with loading showed the highest trabecular bone volume fraction at week 22. Cortical thickness was higher with co-treatment than in the mice treated with PTH alone. In the mid-diaphysis, increases in BMC were significantly higher with loading than PTH. In ovariectomised mice, the osteogenic benefits of co-treatment on the trabecular bone were lower than loading alone. However, combined interventions had increased, albeit regionally-dependent, benefits to cortical bone. Increased benefits were largest in the mid-diaphysis and postero-laterally, regions subjected to higher strains under compressive loads

    Prenatal development is linked to bronchial reactivity: epidemiological and animal model evidence

    Chronic cardiorespiratory disease is associated with low birthweight suggesting the importance of the developmental environment. Prenatal factors affecting fetal growth are believed important, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. The influence of developmental programming on bronchial hyperreactivity is investigated in an animal model and evidence for comparable associations is sought in humans. Pregnant Wistar rats were fed either control or protein-restricted diets throughout pregnancy. Bronchoconstrictor responses were recorded from offspring bronchial segments. Morphometric analysis of paraffin-embedded lung sections was conducted. In a human mother-child cohort ultrasound measurements of fetal growth were related to bronchial hyperreactivity, measured at age six years using methacholine. Protein-restricted rats' offspring demonstrated greater bronchoconstriction than controls. Airway structure was not altered. Children with lesser abdominal circumference growth during 11-19 weeks' gestation had greater bronchial hyperreactivity than those with more rapid abdominal growth. Imbalanced maternal nutrition during pregnancy results in offspring bronchial hyperreactivity. Prenatal environmental influences might play a comparable role in humans

    Control of an atom laser using feedback

    A generalised method of using feedback to control Bose-Einstein condensates is introduced. The condensates are modelled by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, so only semiclassical fluctations can be suppressed, and back-action from the measurement is ignored. We show that for any available control, a feedback scheme can be found to reduce the energy while the appropriate moment is still dynamic. We demonstrate these schemes by considering a condensate trapped in a harmonic potential that can be modulated in strength and position. The formalism of our feedback scheme also allows the inclusion of certain types of non-linear controls. If the non-linear interaction between the atoms can be controlled via a Feshbach resonance, we show that the feedback process can operate with a much higher efficiency.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Vertex functions for d-wave mesons in the light-front approach

    While the light-front quark model (LFQM) is employed to calculate hadronic transition matrix elements, the vertex functions must be pre-determined. In this work we derive the vertex functions for all d-wave states in this model. Especially, since both of 3D1^3D_1 and 3S1^3S_1 are 1−−1^{--} mesons, the Lorentz structures of their vertex functions are the same. Thus when one needs to study the processes where 3D1^3D_1 is involved, all the corresponding formulas for 3S1^3S_1 states can be directly applied, only the coefficient of the vertex function should be replaced by that for 3D1^3D_1. The results would be useful for studying the newly observed resonances which are supposed to be d-wave mesons and furthermore the possible 2S-1D mixing in ψ′\psi' with the LFQM.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, some typos corrected and more discussions added.     Mode Selectivity and Stability of Continuously Pumped Atom Lasers

    A semiclassical, multimode model of a continuously pumped atom laser is presented. For a spatially independent coupling process it is found that the system is unstable below a critical scattering length. As large atomic interactions will increase the phase diffusion of the lasing mode, it is desirable to obtain a stable atom laser with low nonlinearity. It is shown that spatially dependent pumping stabilizes the atom laser to a finite number of modes, and can induce single-mode operation

    The benefits of being seen to help others: indirect reciprocity and reputation-based partner choice

    When one individual helps another, it benefits the recipient and may also gain a reputation for being cooperative. This may induce others to favour the helper in subsequent interactions, so investing in being seen to help others may be adaptive. The best-known mechanism for this is indirect reciprocity (IR), in which the profit comes from an observer who pays a cost to benefit the original helper. IR has attracted considerable theoretical and empirical interest, but it is not the only way in which cooperative reputations can bring benefits. Signalling theory proposes that paying a cost to benefit others is a strategic investment which benefits the signaller through changing receiver behaviour, in particular by being more likely to choose the signaller as a partner. This reputation-based partner choice can result in competitive helping whereby those who help are favoured as partners. These theories have been confused in the literature. We therefore set out the assumptions, the mechanisms and the predictions of each theory for how developing a cooperative reputation can be adaptive.
