How successful are controlled vocabularies at describing transgender topics? This work explores the use of hierarchical taxonomic structures to describe people's often-fluid gender and sexuality identities, particularly the lack of accurate and appropriate language in most commonly used subject thesauri, and how the lack of this accurate and appropriate language can affect potential users. Specifically, I am referring to individuals who identify as gender-nonconforming. This term, as defined by the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, refers to “people who do not follow other people's ideas or stereotypes about how they should look or act based on the female or male sex they were assigned at birth.” The phrase is frequently used as an umbrella term that encompasses a wide variety of gender identities, including transsexual, drag queen, genderqueer, and butch. Many standard vocabularies, including the Library of Congress Subject Headings, have a long and thorny history with regards to prescriptive access points about marginalized groups and sexualities. This work offers a historical overview of the ways in which authorized vocabularies have differed from vernacular language commonly used by community members and LGBTQ scholars to describe their own lives, and explores well- and lesser-known subject vocabularies such as LCSH, MeSH, IHLIA's Homosaurus, and tags assigned by LGBTQ people when describing their personal collections.

The Comparison of Performance Among Nine Biggest Banks in Indonesia Before and After the Implementation of Indonesia Banking Architecture

Like in many countries, banking industry in Indonesia is more dynamic in the last decade. Level of marketcompetition among banks tends to increase continuously. This phenomenon has encouraged banks to createthe more advanced products and services to fulfi ll the growing needs of modern banking customers. Asthe monetary authority, Bank Indonesia has launched the Indonesia Banking Architecture to manage thesedynamics. IBA is a fundamental framework of banking system and provides a direction for banking operationalin Indonesia within 5 to 10 years. It is expected that IBA will create conducive environment which will enablebanks to improve their performance. This research is aimed to compare and analyze the performance of ninebiggest banks in Indonesia before and after the implementation of IBA in 2004. The performance indicatorsused are including ROA, ROE, NIM, CAR, LDR, and NPL. The data on these indicators are collected in theperiod of 2000-2009. The period of 2000-2004 is considered as before the implementation of IBA, while 2005-2009 is defi ned as after the implementation of IBA. The main tool of analysis used in this research is the meanequality test

On aspects of self-consistency in the Dyson-Schwinger approach to QED and \lambda (\phi^\star \phi)^2 theories

We investigate some aspects of the self-consistency in the Dyson-Schwinger approach to both the QED and the self-interacting scalar field theories. We prove that the set of the Dyson-Schwinger equations, together with the Green-Ward-Takahashi identity, is equivalent to the analogous set of integral equations studied in condensed matter, namely many-body perturbation theory, where it is solved self-consistently and iteratively. In this framework, we compute the non-perturbative solution of the gap equation for the self-interacting scalar field theory.Comment: 9 pages, to appear on Phys. Rev.

    Holography for fermions

The holographic interpretation is a useful tool to describe 5D field theories in a 4D language. In particular it allows one to relate 5D AdS theories with 4D CFTs. We elaborate on the 5D/4D dictionary for the case of fermions in AdS5_5 with boundaries. This dictionary is quite useful to address phenomenological issues in a very simple manner, as we show by giving some examples.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures; v2: minor corrections, references adde

First-principles study of crystalline bundles of single-walled boron nanotubes with small diameter

    Get PDF
First-principles calculations based on density functional theory are performed to study structural and electronic properties of crystalline bundles of (n,0) zigzag and (0,n) armchair-type single-walled boron nanotubes (SWBNT) with small diameter, about 4-6. The results predict a modification in the properties of SWBNT bundles relative to those of isolated nanotubes with small diameter. The predicted modification can be attributed to a significant interplay between intra-and inter-tubular bonds in determining the stability of bundles of small diameter SWBNT, analogous to the role played by intra-and inter-icosahedral bonds in the boron crystalline solids. © IOP Publishing Ltd

Exact Microscopic Entropy of Non-Supersymmetric Extremal Black Rings

In this brief note we show that the horizon entropy of the largest known class of non-supersymmetric extremal black rings, with up to six parameters, is exactly reproduced for all values of the ring radius using the same conformal field theory of the four-charge four-dimensional black hole. A particularly simple case is a dipole black ring without any conserved charges. The mass gets renormalized, but the first corrections it receives can be easily understood as an interaction potential energy. Finally, we stress that even if the entropy is correctly reproduced, this only implies that one sector of chiral excitations has been identified, but an understanding of excitations in the other sector is still required in order to capture the black ring dynamics.Comment: 7 pages. v2: minor improvements, ref adde
