    Strong Correlations in Actinide Redox Reactions

    Reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions of the redox couples An(VI)/An(V), An(V)/An(IV), and An(IV)/An(III), where An is an element in the family of early actinides (U, Np, and Pu), as well as Am(VI)/Am(V) and Am(V)/Am(III), are modeled by combining density functional theory with a generalized Anderson impurity model that accounts for the strong correlations between the 5f electrons. Diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model yields improved estimates for the redox potentials and the propensity of the actinide complexes to disproportionate.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure, 3 tables. A 2015 Business Monitor report on pharmaceutical manufacturing in Kenya states that the country hosts the largest pharmaceutical industrial base in East Africa. The report also sees a bright future as a ‘potential base for export across East Africa’ (BMI Research, 2015).     The Optical Counterpart of the X-ray Transient RX J0117.6-7330: Spectroscopy and Photometry

    We conducted spectroscopic and photometric observations of the optical counterpart of the X-ray transient RX J0117.6-7330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, during a quiescent state. The primary star is identified as a B0.5 IIIe, with mass M = (18 +/- 2) M(sun) and bolometric magnitude M(bol) = -7.4 +/- 0.2. The main spectral features are strong H-alpha emission, H-beta and H-gamma emission cores with absorption wings, and narrow HeI and OII absorption lines. Equivalent width and FWHM of the main lines are listed. The average systemic velocity over our observing run is v(r) = (184 +/- 4) km/s; measurements over a longer period of time are needed to determine the binary period and the K velocity of the primary. We determine a projected rotational velocity v sin i = (145 +/- 10) km/s for the Be star, and we deduce that the inclination angle of the system is i = (21 +/- 3)deg.Comment: submitted to PASA; 6 figure

To better understand the nature of trophoblast–leukocyte interactions, we have studied signal transduction during intercellular interactions.Using a highly sensitive microfluorometric ratioing method and Ca 2+ -sensitive dyes, we measured Ca 2+ signals in trophoblast-like cell lines (JEG-3 and JAR) or in leukocytes (neutrophils and monocytes) during intercellular contact.Trophoblast cell lines exhibit Ca 2+ signals during leukocyte contact. In contrast, leukocytes cannot elicit Ca 2+ signals in non-opsonized tumour cells, suggesting that Ca 2+ signaling is not a general feature of cell–cell encounters. Similarly, leukocytes demonstrate Ca 2+ signals during contact with trophoblast cell lines.     Modeling the aggregated exposure and responses of bowhead whales Balaena mysticetus to multiple sources of anthropogenic underwater sound

    Potential responses of marine mammals to anthropogenic underwater sound are usually assessed by researchers and regulators on the basis of exposure to a single, relatively loud sound source. However, marine mammals typically receive sounds from multiple, dynamic sources. We developed a method to aggregate modeled sounds from multiple sources and estimate the sound levels received by individuals. To illustrate the method, we modeled the sound fields of 9 sources associated with oil development and estimated the sound received over 47 d by a population of 10 000 simulated bowhead whales Balaena mysticetus on their annual migration through the Alaskan Beaufort Sea. Empirical data were sufficient to parameterize simulations of the distribution of individual whales over time and their range of movement patterns. We ran 2 simulations to estimate the sound exposure history and distances traveled by bowhead whales: one in which they could change their movement paths (avert) in response to set levels of sound and one in which they could not avert. When animals could not avert, about 2% of the simulated population was exposed to root mean square (rms) sound pressure levels (SPL) \u3e = 180 dB re 1 mu Pa, a level that regulators in the U.S. often associate with injury. When animals could avert from sound levels that regulators often associate with behavioral disturbance (rms SPL \u3e 160 dB re 1 mu Pa), \u3c 1% of the simulated population was exposed to levels associated with injury. Nevertheless, many simulated bowhead whales received sound levels considerably above ambient throughout their migration. Our method enables estimates of the aggregated level of sound to which populations are exposed over extensive areas and time periods

    Endothelial heme oxygenase-1 induction by hypoxia. Modulation by inducible nitric-oxide synthase and S-nitrosothiols.

    The stress protein heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is induced in endothelial cells exposed to nitric oxide (NO)-releasing agents, and this process is finely modulated by thiols (Foresti, R., Clark, J. E., Green, C. J., and Motterlini R. (1997) J. Biol. Chem. 272, 18411–18417). Here, we report that up-regulation of HO-1 in aortic endothelial cells by severe hypoxic conditions (pO2 ≤ 2 mm Hg) is preceded by increased inducible NO synthase and NO synthase activity. This effect is accompanied by oxidation of intracellular glutathione and formation of S-nitrosothiols. Incubation of cells with a selective inhibitor of inducible NO synthase (S-(2-aminoethyl)-isothiourea) or a NO scavenger ([2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide]) significantly attenuated the increase in heme oxygenase activity caused by reduced oxygen availability. A series of antioxidant agents did not prevent the elevation in heme oxygenase activity by hypoxia; however, the precursor of glutathione synthesis and thiol donor,N-acetylcysteine, completely abolished HO-1 induction. We also found that the hypoxia-mediated increase in endothelial heme oxygenase activity was potentiated by the presence ofS-nitrosoglutathione. These results indicate that intracellular interaction of thiols with NO is an important determinant in the mechanism leading to HO-1 induction by reduced oxygen levels. We suggest that in addition to oxidative stress, HO-1 gene expression can be regulated by redox reactions involving NO andS-nitrosothiols (nitrosative stress), emphasizing a versatile role for the heme oxygenase pathway in the cellular adaptation to a variety of stressful conditions

    Improving Conditions for Incarcerated Individuals

    Whereas, in 2019, the United States’ incarceration rate was estimated to be 629 per 100,000 people, which is the highest rate globally and over 8% higher than the closest country; and Whereas, in Indiana, the total jail population has increased 526% from 1970 to 2015 and the total prison population has increased 224% from 1983 to 2018, with our incarceration rates being fourth highest nationally; and Whereas, in 2015, Indiana had the second highest rate of pretrial detainees in the nation at a rate of 272 per 100,000 people; and Whereas, since 2000, the rate of pretrial detainees has increased 72% among Indiana’s 48 rural counties, 43% in 21 small/medium counties, 40% in 22 suburban counties, and 268% in Marion county alone; and Whereas, in the United States, the rate of recidivism is 70% within 5 years of release with few resources to assist reentering individuals find housing, gain employment, or access social services; and Whereas, when connected with employment opportunities, financial planning services, stable housing, and physical and mental health services, rates of recidivism decrease significantly, over 60% amongst those who complete programs, among reentering individuals; and Whereas, incarcerated individuals have higher rates of mental illness than the general population, with approximately 14.5% of men and 31% of women in jails having at least one mental illness as compared to 3.2% and 4.9% respectively amongst the general population; and Whereas, nationally, the number of suicides has increased by 85% in state prisons, 61% in federal prisons, and 13% in local jails from 2001 to 2019, with suicide being the leading cause of death in jails; and Whereas, the risk of suicide in recently released individuals is nearly 6.8 times higher than that of the general population, with most occurring within 28 days of release; and Whereas, in a study of 80 jails by Scheyett et al., 68 reported having no mental health staff who provided care within the jail, 15 reported taking, on average, 5 days or longer to retrieve inmates’ medications and none were utilizing evidence-based screenings to assess for serious mental illnesses, highlighting a concerning disconnect between jail staff and mental health providers; and Whereas, re-entering individuals are unlikely to connect with primary care upon release and very rarely seek mental health services in the months following release; and Whereas, inarcerated individuals are often restricted from accessing rehabilitative social services such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and Medicaid either through a lack of meeting eligibility requirements or personally held beliefs by incarcerated individuals surrounding eligibility and accessing resources; and Whereas, when provided assistance and access to expedited Medicaid enrollment, reentering individuals were more likely to access health services and receive prescriptions; and 263 Whereas, ISMA (RESOLUTION 15-31) advocates for improved health care of incarcerated individuals; therefore, be it RESOLVED, that ISMA support legislation that improves access to comprehensive physical and behavioral health care services for juveniles and adults throughout the incarceration process from intake to re-entry into the community; and be it further RESOLVED, that ISMA support legislation that removes barriers and increases access to social services and benefits apropos to the respective situations of incarcerated individuals and re-entering individuals, such as: (a) food subsidies; (b) healthcare, including Medicare and/or Medicaid; and (c) housing; and be it further RESOLVED, that ISMA work with relevant stakeholders to create discharge planning and programs that connect reentering individuals with primary care providers and medical homes within the community

    To access the relative potency of pesticides to control adult mosquitoes, 19 pesticides with various modes of action were evaluated against Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus Say, and Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say. On the basis of 24-h LD50 values after topical application, the only pesticide that had higher activity than permethrin was fipronil, with LD50 values lower than permethrin for 107-, 4,849-, and 2-fold against Ae. aegypti, Cx. quinquefasciatus Say, and An. quadrimaculatus Say, respectively. Abamectin, imidacloprid, spinosad, diazinon, and carbaryl showed slightly lower activity than permethrin (\u3c20-fold). However, bifenazate showed very low activity against the three mosquito species tested, with LD50 values higher than permthrin for \u3e1000-fold. On the basis of 24-h LD50 values, Cx. quinquefasciatus was the least susceptible species to nine pesticides tested (DNOC, azocyclotin, chlorfenapyr, carbaryl, spinosad, imidaclorid, diazinon, abamectin, and permethrin), whereas Ae. aegypti was the least susceptible species to six pesticides tested (dicofol, amitraz, propargite, hydramethylnon, cyhexatin, and diafenthiuron), and An. quadrimaculatus was the least susceptible species to four pesticides tested (bifenazate, pyridaben, indoxacarb, and fipronil). Our results revealed that different species of mosquitoes had different susceptibility to pesticides, showing the need to select the most efficacious compounds for the least susceptible mosquito species to achieve successful mosquito control
