    Technology Directions for the 21st Century

    The Office of Space Communications (OSC) is tasked by NASA to conduct a planning process to meet NASA's science mission and other communications and data processing requirements. A set of technology trend studies was undertaken by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for OSC to identify quantitative data that can be used to predict performance of electronic equipment in the future to assist in the planning process. Only commercially available, off-the-shelf technology was included. For each technology area considered, the current state of the technology is discussed, future applications that could benefit from use of the technology are identified, and likely future developments of the technology are described. The impact of each technology area on NASA operations is presented together with a discussion of the feasibility and risk associated with its development. An approximate timeline is given for the next 15 to 25 years to indicate the anticipated evolution of capabilities within each of the technology areas considered. This volume contains four chapters: one each on technology trends for database systems, computer software, neural and fuzzy systems, and artificial intelligence. The principal study results are summarized at the beginning of each chapter

    Experimental Investigations of Induction Heating in Warm Forming of Stainless Steel Sheets

    The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of heating conditions on the temperature distribution in sheet metal. An AMS5604 stainless steel sheet was heated in an induction heater. Then, the hot workpiece was transported to the stamping tool. The uniform temperature distribution is a key factor influencing the possibility of forming and quality of warm-formed parts. To study the temperature distribution in sheet plate we carried out the measurements using termoelements. Furthermore, thermovisual measurements were performed using a FLIR P 640 thermovisual camera. It was found that to improve the uniformity of the temperature distribution in the workpiece the time of heating should be increased. However, the time of transport of the sheet to the tool should be decreased. During air cooling a decrease of the difference between the maximal and minimal temperature of the sheet is observed

    Bayesian separation of spectral sources under non-negativity and full additivity constraints

    This paper addresses the problem of separating spectral sources which are linearly mixed with unknown proportions. The main difficulty of the problem is to ensure the full additivity (sum-to-one) of the mixing coefficients and non-negativity of sources and mixing coefficients. A Bayesian estimation approach based on Gamma priors was recently proposed to handle the non-negativity constraints in a linear mixture model. However, incorporating the full additivity constraint requires further developments. This paper studies a new hierarchical Bayesian model appropriate to the non-negativity and sum-to-one constraints associated to the regressors and regression coefficients of linear mixtures. The estimation of the unknown parameters of this model is performed using samples generated using an appropriate Gibbs sampler. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through simulation results conducted on synthetic mixture models.     What is a Paraconsistent Logic?

    Paraconsistent logics are logical systems that reject the classical principle, usually dubbed Explosion, that a contradiction implies everything. However, the received view about paraconsistency focuses only the inferential version of Explosion, which is concerned with formulae, thereby overlooking other possible accounts. In this paper, we propose to focus, additionally, on a meta-inferential version of Explosion, i.e. which is concerned with inferences or sequents. In doing so, we will offer a new characterization of paraconsistency by means of which a logic is paraconsistent if it invalidates either the inferential or the meta-inferential notion of Explosion. We show the non-triviality of this criterion by discussing a number of logics. On the one hand, logics which validate and invalidate both versions of Explosion, such as classical logic and Asenjo–Priest’s 3-valued logic LP. On the other hand, logics which validate one version of Explosion but not the other, such as the substructural logics TS and ST, introduced by Malinowski and Cobreros, Egré, Ripley and van Rooij, which are obtained via Malinowski’s and Frankowski’s q- and p-matrices, respectively

    Polyelectrolyte-Linked Film Assemblies of Nanoparticles and Nanoshells: Growth, Stability, and Optical Properties

    Multi-layer films of nanoparticles and nanoshells featuring various polymeric linkage molecules have been assembled and their optical properties characterized. The growth dynamics, including molecular weight effects, and stability of the various nanoparticle film constructions, using both single polymer as well as combinations of alternating charge polyelectrolytes as linking mechanisms, are presented. The polymeric linkers studied include poly-L-lysine, poly-L-arginine, poly(allylamine hydrochloride), and polyamidoamine dendrimers. Significantly air stable films were achieved with the use of multi-layered polymeric bridges between the nanoparticles and nanoshells. Optical sensitivity normally observed with these nanomaterials in solution was observed for their corresponding film geometries, with the nanoshell films exhibiting a markedly higher ability to report their local dielectric environment

    Asymmetric Synthesis of the Aminocyclitol Pactamycin, a Universal Translocation Inhibitor

    An asymmetric total synthesis of the aminocyclopentitol pactamycin is described, which delivers the title compound in 15 steps from 2,4-pentanedione. Critical to this approach was the exploitation of a complex symmetry-breaking reduction strategy to assemble the C1, C2, and C7 relative stereochemistry within the first four steps of the synthesis. Multiple iterations of this reduction strategy are described, and a thorough analysis of stereochemical outcomes is detailed. In the final case, an asymmetric Mannich reaction was developed to install a protected amine directly at the C2 position. Symmetry-breaking reduction of this material gave way to a remarkable series of stereochemical outcomes leading to the title compound without recourse to non-strategic downstream manipulations. This synthesis is immediately accommodating to the facile preparation of structural analogs

    Microfluidic active loading of single cells enables analysis of complex clinical specimens

    A fundamental trade-off between flow rate and measurement precision limits performance of many single-cell detection strategies, especially for applications that require biophysical measurements from living cells within complex and low-input samples. To address this, we introduce ‘active loading’, an automated, optically-triggered fluidic system that improves measurement throughput and robustness by controlling entry of individual cells into a measurement channel. We apply active loading to samples over a range of concentrations (1–1000 particles μL[superscript −1]), demonstrate that measurement time can be decreased by up to 20-fold, and show theoretically that performance of some types of existing single-cell microfluidic devices can be improved by implementing active loading.
