A feasibility study of a microgravity enhancement system for Space Station Freedom
The current low frequency microgravity requirements for Space Station Freedom (SSF) call for a level of less than 1 micro-g over 50 percent of all the laboratory racks for continuous periods of 30 days for at least 180 days per year. While this requirement is attainable for some of the laboratory modules for the Permanently Manned Configuration (PMC), it can not be met for the Man-Tended Configuration (MTC). In addition, many experiments would prefer even lower acceleration levels. To improve the microgravity environment, the Microgravity Enhancement System (MESYS) will apply a continuous thrust to SSF, to negate the disturbing gravity gradient and drag forces. The MESYS consists of a sensor, throttle-able thrusters and a control system. Both a proof mass system and accelerometer were evaluated for use as the sensor. The net result of the MESYS will be to shift the microgravity contours from the center of mass to a chosen location. Results indicate the MESYS is not feasible for MTC since it will require 5,073 kg of hydrazine fuel and 7,660 watts of power for 30 days of operation during average atmospheric conditions. For PMC, the MESYS is much more practical since only 4,008 kg of fuel and 5,640 watts of power are required
Collateral and Debt Maturity Choice. A Signaling Model
This paper derives optimal loan policies under asymmetric information where banks offer loan contracts of long and short duration, backed or unbacked with collateral. The main novelty of the paper is that it analyzes a setting in which high quality firms use collateral as a complementary device along with debt maturity to signal their superiority. The least-cost signaling equilibrium depends on the relative costs of the signaling devices, the difference in firm quality and the proportion of good firms in the market. Model simulations suggest a non-monotonic relationship between firm quality and debt maturity, in which high quality firms have both long-term secured debt and short-term secured or non-secured debt.
A Dietary-Wide Association Study (DWAS) of Environmental Metal Exposure in US Children and Adults
Background: A growing body of evidence suggests that exposure to toxic metals occurs through diet but few studies have comprehensively examined dietary sources of exposure in US populations.
Purpose: Our goal was to perform a novel dietary-wide association study (DWAS) to identify specific dietary sources of lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic exposure in US children and adults.
Methods: We combined data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with data from the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Intakes Converted to Retail Commodities Database to examine associations between 49 different foods and environmental metal exposure. Using blood and urinary biomarkers for lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic, we compared sources of dietary exposure among children to that of adults.
Results: Diet accounted for more of the variation in mercury and arsenic than lead and cadmium. For instance we estimate 4.5% of the variation of mercury among children and 10.5% among adults is explained by diet. We identified a previously unrecognized association between rice consumption and mercury in a US study population – adjusted for other dietary sources such as seafood, an increase of 10 g/day of rice consumption was associated with a 4.8% (95% CI: 3.6, 5.2) increase in blood mercury concentration. Associations between diet and metal exposure were similar among children and adults, and we recapitulated other known dietary sources of exposure.
Conclusion: Utilizing this combination of data sources, this approach has the potential to identify and monitor dietary sources of metal exposure in the US population
Divergent mathematical treatments in utility theory
In this paper I study how divergent mathematical treatments affect mathematical modelling, with a special focus on utility theory. In particular I examine recent work on the ranking of information states and the discounting of future utilities, in order to show how, by replacing the standard analytical treatment of the models involved with one based on the framework of Nonstandard Analysis, diametrically opposite results are obtained. In both cases, the choice between the standard and nonstandard treatment amounts to a selection of set-theoretical parameters that cannot be made on purely empirical grounds. The analysis of this phenomenon gives rise to a simple logical account of the relativity of impossibility theorems in economic theory, which concludes the paper
Human monoclonal antibodies against Ross River virus target epitopes within the E2 protein and protect against disease
Ross River fever is a mosquito-transmitted viral disease that is endemic to Australia and the surrounding Pacific Islands. Ross River virus (RRV) belongs to the arthritogenic group of alphaviruses, which largely cause disease characterized by debilitating polyarthritis, rash, and fever. There is no specific treatment or licensed vaccine available, and the mechanisms of protective humoral immunity in humans are poorly understood. Here, we describe naturally occurring human mAbs specific to RRV, isolated from subjects with a prior natural infection. These mAbs potently neutralize RRV infectivity in cell culture and block infection through multiple mechanisms, including prevention of viral attachment, entry, and fusion. Some of the most potently neutralizing mAbs inhibited binding of RRV to Mxra8, a recently discovered alpahvirus receptor. Epitope mapping studies identified the A and B domains of the RRV E2 protein as the major antigenic sites for the human neutralizing antibody response. In experiments in mice, these mAbs were protective against cinical disease and reduced viral burden in multiple tissues, suggesting a potential therapeutic use for humans
Nonlinear Differential Equations Satisfied by Certain Classical Modular Forms
A unified treatment is given of low-weight modular forms on \Gamma_0(N),
N=2,3,4, that have Eisenstein series representations. For each N, certain
weight-1 forms are shown to satisfy a coupled system of nonlinear differential
equations, which yields a single nonlinear third-order equation, called a
generalized Chazy equation. As byproducts, a table of divisor function and
theta identities is generated by means of q-expansions, and a transformation
law under \Gamma_0(4) for the second complete elliptic integral is derived.
More generally, it is shown how Picard-Fuchs equations of triangle subgroups of
PSL(2,R) which are hypergeometric equations, yield systems of nonlinear
equations for weight-1 forms, and generalized Chazy equations. Each triangle

Lime stabilisation for earthworks: a UK perspective
Lime stabilisation is a versatile technique applied during earthworks operations. Modern soil recycling units are much more efficient at pulverising fill material and intermixing the added binder/water than machinery available 20 years ago. While supplier innovation adds flexibility to the site working method, specifications have not been sufficiently updated to permit optimal application. This review paper details the physico-chemical changes instigated through the lime-clay soil reaction, updating previous reviews. It aims to assist scientific debate, current practitioners and future specification changes. For example, the application of the minimum 24 h mellowing periods (mandatory to UK specifications) with high reactivity, quicklime powders is concluded to cause increased air voids in the compacted fill. Increased air voids are associated with reduced long-term strength and potential volume change from water ingress, which is of particular concern for sulfate swelling. Shorter mellowing periods and/or use of hydrated lime may lesson this issue; however, a 'one size fits all' approach is discouraged in preference to site-specific methodologies refined to suit the fill material and project requirements. The discussion also summarises working methods which may lower the risk of sulfate swell and defines areas requiring further practical research
Rapid Responders to Frovatriptan in Acute Migraine Treatment: Results from a Long-Term, Open-Label Study
Background. the Chronic Nature of Migraine and the Reliance on Acute Treatment Constitute the Basis of the Present Long-Term, Open-Label Study. Objectives. First, Assessment of the Tolerability and Safety of Frovatriptan, 2.5-7.5 Mg Taken Orally over 24 Hours, for the Acute Treatment of Migraine, Repeatedly over a 12-Month Period. Second, Assessment of the Efficacy and Tolerability of a Second, Double-Blind Dose of 2.5-Mg Frovatriptan, Compared with Placebo, for Nonresponse at 2 Hours after Treatment of Moderate or Severe Headache with 2.5-Mg Frovatriptan. Results. with Regard to the First Attack Treated, 173 (36%) of the 486 Subjects in the Study Did Not Take a Second Dose at 2 Hours for Nonresponse. at 2 Hours and 4 Hours, These Rapid Responders Experienced a Decrease in Headache Intensity from Moderate or Severe to Mild or No Pain in 84% and 98%, Respectively ( Headache Response ). Six Percent of Them Experienced Recurrence of Moderate or Severe Headache within 24 Hours Following a Response at 4 Hours and 12% Took Rescue Medication. the Response, Measured in Terms of Median Time to Complete Migraine Relief, Was Maintained over 30 Subsequent Migraine Attacks, Treated from Attack 2 Onwards over the Course of 12 Months. Conclusion. Frovatriptan Provides a Remarkably Fast and High Headache Response in a Subgroup of More Than One-Third of Migraineurs, with a Very Low 24-Hour Headache Recurrence and Low Rescue Medication Intake. © 2009 American Academy of Pain Medicine
