    Opinion dynamics with varying susceptibility to persuasion

    A long line of work in social psychology has studied variations in people's susceptibility to persuasion -- the extent to which they are willing to modify their opinions on a topic. This body of literature suggests an interesting perspective on theoretical models of opinion formation by interacting parties in a network: in addition to considering interventions that directly modify people's intrinsic opinions, it is also natural to consider interventions that modify people's susceptibility to persuasion. In this work, we adopt a popular model for social opinion dynamics, and we formalize the opinion maximization and minimization problems where interventions happen at the level of susceptibility. We show that modeling interventions at the level of susceptibility lead to an interesting family of new questions in network opinion dynamics. We find that the questions are quite different depending on whether there is an overall budget constraining the number of agents we can target or not. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for finding the optimal target-set to optimize the sum of opinions when there are no budget constraints on the size of the target-set. We show that this problem is NP-hard when there is a budget, and that the objective function is neither submodular nor supermodular. Finally, we propose a heuristic for the budgeted opinion optimization and show its efficacy at finding target-sets that optimize the sum of opinions compared on real world networks, including a Twitter network with real opinion estimates

Despite these potential benefits of IMDs, thermo-mechanical concerns remain over the close coupling integration of the power module and machine This thesis presents a novel end winding mount Integrated Motor Drive. CFD simulations are performed for thermal analysis of the proposed concept and investigation of the effects of the cooling systems in IMDs. The thermal, mechanical and electrical effects of close coupling integration are investigated and solutions proposed. The design and manufacture of a working End Winding mount IMD prototype is also described with particular attention to the thermal effects and temperature distribution in the manufactured prototype

    Using biotechnology to enhance host resistance to aflatoxin contamination of corn

    Host resistance is the most widely explored strategy for eliminating aflatoxin contamination by Aspergillus flavus. Breeding strategies for developing resistant corn germplasm have been enhanced by the development of new screening tools for field inoculation and for laboratory screening. RFLP analysis of corn populations has highlighted the possibility that different resistance traits can be successfully pyramided into agronomically useful germplasm, while proteomics has impacted the identification of proteins associated with resistance (RAPs). The identification of RAPs has also been enhanced by the discovery of near-isogenic corn lines in progeny generated in a West African breeding program. The characterization of genes of the aflatoxin biosynthetic pathway has provided a foundation for a genomics investigation aimed at understanding the biochemical function and genetic regulation of aflatoxin biosynthesis. Successful inhibition of aflatoxin elaboration may require not only the action of antifungal compounds, but of compounds that block biosynthesis of toxins as well.     Thermo-mechanical behavior of aluminum matrix nano-composite automobile disc brake rotor using finite element method

    Analysis of mechanical and thermal behaviors during braking has become an increasingly important issue in many transport sectors for different modes of transportation. Brake failure generated during braking is a complex phenomenon confronting automobile manufacturers and designers. During braking, kinetic energy is transferred to thermal energy, resulting in the intense heating of disc brake rotors that increases proportionally with vehicle speed, mass, and braking frequency. It is essential to look into and improve strategies to make versatile, thermally resistant, lightweight, high-performance discs. As a result, this study uses the finite element method to conduct a thermo-mechanical analysis of aluminum alloy and aluminum matrix nano-composite disc brake rotors to address the abovementioned issues. The FEA method is used for the thermo-mechanical analysis of AMNCs for vented disc brake rotor during emergency braking at 70 km/h. From the results obtained, aluminum base metal matrix nano-composites have an excellent strength-to-weight ratio when used as disc brake rotor materials, significantly improving the discs' thermal and mechanical performance. From the result of transient thermal analysis, the maximum value of heat flux obtained for aluminum alloy disc is about 8 W/mm(2), whereas for AMNCs, the value is increased to 16.28 W/mm(2). The result from static analysis shows that the maximum deformation observed is 0.19 mm for aluminum alloy disc and 0.05 mm for AMNCs disc. In addition, the maximum von Mises stress value of AMNC disc is about 184 MPa. The maximum von Mises stress value of aluminum alloy disc is about 180 MPa. Therefore, according to the results, the proposed aluminum base metal matrix nano-composites are valid for replacing existing materials for disc brake rotor applications.Web of Science1517art. no. 607

    Collective Efficacy: Development and Validation of a Measurement Scale for Use in Public Health and Development Programmes.

    Impact evaluations of water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions have demonstrated lower than expected health gains, in some cases due to low uptake and sustained adoption of interventions at a community level. These findings represent common challenges for public health and development programmes relying on collective action. One possible explanation may be low collective efficacy (CE)-perceptions regarding a group's ability to execute actions related to a common goal. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a metric to assess factors related to CE. We conducted this research within a cluster-randomised sanitation and hygiene trial in Amhara, Ethiopia. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were carried out to examine underlying structures of CE for men and women in rural Ethiopia. We produced three CE scales: one each for men and women that allow for examinations of gender-specific mechanisms through which CE operates, and one 26-item CE scale that can be used across genders. All scales demonstrated high construct validity. CE factor scores were significantly higher for men than women, even among household-level male-female dyads. These CE scales will allow implementers to better design and target community-level interventions, and examine the role of CE in the effectiveness of community-based programming

    Natural adaptation and human selection of northeast African sheep genomes

    African sheep manifest diverse but distinct physio-anatomical traits, which are the outcomes of natural- and human-driven selection. Here, we generated 34.8 million variants from 150 indigenous northeast African sheep genomes sequenced at an average depth of ∼54× for 130 samples (Ethiopia, Libya) and ∼20× for 20 samples (Sudan). These represented sheep from diverse environments, tail morphology and post-Neolithic introductions to Africa. Phylogenetic and model-based admixture analysis provided evidence of four genetic groups corresponding to altitudinal geographic origins, tail morphotypes and possible historical introduction and dispersal of the species into and across the continent. Running admixture at higher levels of K (6 ≤ K ≤ 25), revealed cryptic levels of genome intermixing as well as distinct genetic backgrounds in some populations. Comparative genomic analysis identified targets of selection that spanned conserved haplotype structures overlapping clusters of genes and gene families. These were related to hypoxia responses, ear morphology, caudal vertebrae and tail skeleton length, and tail fat-depot structures.     The global burden of non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

    Background Non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease is a major cause of global morbidity and mortality. Malnourished children, those with recent malaria or sickle-cell anaemia, and adults with HIV infection are at particularly high risk of disease. We sought to estimate the burden of disease attributable to non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease for the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017. Methods We did a systematic review of scientific databases and grey literature, and estimated non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease incidence and mortality for the years 1990 to 2017, by age, sex, and geographical location using DisMod-MR, a Bayesian meta-regression tool. We estimated case fatality by age, HIV status, and sociodemographic development. We also calculated the HIV-attributable fraction and estimated health gap metrics, including disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Findings We estimated that 535 000 (95% uncertainty interval 409 000-705 000) cases of non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease occurred in 2017, with the highest incidence in sub-Saharan Africa (34.5 [26.6-45.0] cases per 100 000 person-years) and in children younger than 5 years (34.3 [23.2-54.7] cases per 100 000 person-years). 77 500 (46 400-123 000) deaths were estimated in 2017, of which 18 400 (12 000-27 700) were attributable to HIV. The remaining 59 100 (33 300-98 100) deaths not attributable to HIV accounted for 4.26 million (2.38-7.38) DALYs in 2017. Mean all-age case fatality was 14.5% (9.2-21.1), with higher estimates among children younger than 5 years (13.5% [8.4-19.8]) and elderly people (51.2% [30.2-72.9] among those aged >= 70 years), people with HIV infection (41.8% [30.0-54.0]), and in areas of low sociodemographic development (eg, 15.8% [10.0-22.9] in sub-Saharan Africa). Interpretation We present the first global estimates of non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease that have been produced as part of GBD 2017. Given the high disease burden, particularly in children, elderly people, and people with HIV infection, investigating the sources and transmission pathways of non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease is crucial to implement effective preventive and control measures.
