This paper studies tilings related to the beta-transformation when beta is a Pisot number (that is not supposed to be a unit). Then it applies the obtained results to study the set of rational numbers having a purely periodic beta-expansion. Special focus is given to some quadratic examples

Exceptional Longevity: Are Socioeconomic Conditions in Childhood Important?

The close relationship between early childhood conditions and health and mortality outcomes in old age has been extensively studied in both the epidemiological and demographic fields. The channels through which early life is hypothesized to influence mortality are diverse and could be direct or indirect via adult characteristics. Despite the ample evidence on the influence of childhood conditions on overall longevity, less established in the literature is whether this association holds true within long lived families and whether this is a direct effect or an indirect effect. In this paper we investigate the association between socioeconomic and biodemographic factors in early life and mortality after age 40 and through which pathways this effect may operate. An event-history database that links individuals to their childhood characteristics gathered from the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census records and to their adult characteristics is used. Gender-specific parametric models with a Gompertz specification of the risk of mortality are used to estimate the effect of early life and adult variables on mortality risks after age 40. The link between early life conditions and later life outcomes is examined both with and without intermediary characteristics, aiming for a better understanding regarding to what extent the effect of exposure to an early life insult can be mediated. Overall, it is found that adverse childhood conditions leave an indelible direct and indirect imprint on adult mortality among long-lived men, while childhood conditions only exert a significant direct effect among men from the general population. The results also suggest substantial gender differences, with men being more sensitive to early life socioeconomic conditions and adult occupation than women

Les questions et objections souvent rapportées par les étudiants sont également prises en compte. Exégèse : Les principes qui sous-tendent le TCS sont rappelés. Ses atouts et ses limites sont évoqués. Les étapes de construction, de validation, de passation, de calcul de la note sont développées. Les auteurs illustrent le propos en s’appuyant sur une expérience concrète menée au Département de médecine générale de l’Université de Liège Most teacher concerns about Script Concordance Tests (SCT) are the object of some 20 questions and answers. The questions and objections most commonly reported by students are also taken into account. Analysis: The principles of SCT are described. Their strengths and limitations are discussed. The steps in designing, validating, testing and calculating scores are developed. « Nous, les Allemands, nous sommes un peuple de réfugiés ». La mémoire des migrations dans la presse allemande durant l’été 2015

Vertriebene (expulsés), réfugiés de RDA ou encore Gastarbeiter (travailleurs immigrés) : telles sont les migrations auxquelles est comparé l’afflux de réfugiés à l’été 2015. À côté de l’information sur l’actualité, la presse allemande, en constituant une généalogie des migrations censées avoir fait l’Allemagne d’aujourd’hui, opère un « collective-memory setting ». Elle réactive et re-modèle la mémoire dans un récit à fonction prescriptive, une « construction fonctionnelle » porteuse d’un modèle de comportement et dont l’horizon est l’accueil des réfugiés. La généalogie des migrations établie à l’été 2015 remplit alors la fonction d’une tradition positive dans laquelle s’inscrire, construit une identité, celle d’un pays-refuge, d’un pays dont la ligne directrice ne peut être que « wir schaffen das ». À l’été 2015, les journalistes ne sont pas seulement des observateurs et des médiateurs neutres, mais sont aussi acteurs à la fois du discours mémoriel et de la politique. C’est ce qui leur sera reproché à l’automne, après la phase d’euphorie, lorsque ce discours mémoriel et sa fonction seront critiqués en même temps que les médias qui les ont relayés et produits.Im Sommer 2015 wird in der deutschen Presse, parallel zur aktuellen Berichterstattung über die Ankunft in Europa Tausender Flüchtlinge, auf als vergleichbar dargestellte historische Präzedenzfälle zurückgegriffen. Unter anderem Vertriebene, DDR-Flüchtlinge, Gastarbeiter bilden durch eine explizite Serialisierung eine Genealogie der Migrationen, welche Deutschland geprägt haben sollen. Dadurch findet in der Presse ein „collective-memory setting“ statt, es wird retrospektiv ein „funktional konstruiertes“ Gedächtnis aktiviert, welches wiederum als Interpretationsmuster der Aktualität eine preskriptive und normative Funktion innehat: Horizont des medial vermittelten Gedächtnisses ist die Aufnahme der Flüchtlinge. Die Genealogie der Migrationen schafft eine positive Identität des heutigen Deutschland als Zufluchtsland, dessen Motto nichts anderes „wir schaffen das“ sein kann. Die Journalisten werden dadurch zu Akteuren des öffentichen Lebens und der Politik. Im Herbst 2015 aber endet das „Sommermärchen“; es werden gleichzeitig die Aufnahme von Migranten und die Haltung der Presse diesem Thema gegenüber in Frage gestellt

Serialisierte Erzählung und kulturspezifische Pressenarrative: Die „Wulff-Affäre“ in der deutschen Presse

This paper addresses narrativity in press discourse from a postclassical and transdisciplinary perspective and seeks to describe dominant metanarratives in German journalistic culture. The corpus consists of all the press texts about the Wulff-scandal (that led to the resignation of the Bundespräsident in 2012). The paper defines the characteristics of narrativity in the press and presents the theory of French-speaking authors about press narration as a serialized macro-text with its own temporality. It proceeds to a close reading of the corpus and describes markers of narrativity, of seriality, of cohesion and of temporal organi-zation. The narration in the press is described as simultaneous, retrospective and prospective / performative. It appears that it is a kind of self-fulfilling narrative, organised in a teleological perspective with Wulff’s resignation as the only possi-ble resolution. In the underlying metanarrative, scandals appear as stages on the way to an exemplary democracy, in which the journalists have a central function, on the side of or against the politicians. The social group of journalists is de-scribed as a narrative community with its own narrative forms and culturally available plots, its own narrative memory, i.e. its own founding stories that are told again and again with an exemplary function, and with its own goals that are legitimated by the narratives

Les médias à Berlin, au centre des conflits

L’affrontement Est/Ouest se fait à Berlin par le biais des médias dans la ville et par la ville, celle-ci devenant elle-même dans son organisation et dans sa matérialité un acteur et une chambre d’écho de ces conflits. Les deux espaces de communication sont imbriqués, en particulier par la circulation des médias audiovisuels d’Ouest en Est mais aussi d’Est en Ouest. L’audiovisuel de l’Ouest est la (contre)-référence permanente, explicite ou implicite, des médias de l’Est et du discours officiel sur ces médias, tant dans la réalité de la consommation que dans les représentations. On a donc affaire à un phénomène transnational de représentations croisées et imbriquées des médias respectifs, qui fait qu’ils s’influencent également mutuellement. Le groupe Springer, installé à Berlin, est à la fois un acteur (notamment avec son immeuble de la Kochstraße) mais aussi un objet omniprésent de la communication et des conflits des deux côtés du Mur, ce qui aura des conséquences à moyen et long terme dans le domaine des médias (naissance de nouveaux médias alternatifs) mais aussi sur le plan de l’urbanisme.Der Ost-West-Konflikt hat in Berlin auch durch die Medien stattgefunden; die Stadt Berlin selbst ist in ihrer Organisation und ihrer Materialität zu einem Aktanten und einer Echokammer dieser Konflikte geworden. Die beiden Öffentlichkeiten bzw. Kommunikationsräume waren insbesondere dadurch miteinander verflochten, dass Rundfunkmedien von West nach Ost, aber auch umgekehrt sendeten. Der Westrundfunk blieb für die Ostmedien ein ständiges, implizites oder explizites Gegenmodell, was auch für den offiziellen Diskurs über diese Medien der Fall war; dies galt sowohl für die Medienkonsumgewohnheiten als auch für die Repräsentationen. Man hat es hier mir einem transnationalen Phänomen von verflochtenen Repräsentationen der jeweiligen Medien zu tun, die in einem wechselseitigen Verhältnis stehen und dadurch auch einen Einfluss auf einander ausüben. Der seit den 60er Jahren in Berlin ansässige Springer-Konzern war mit seinem Springerhochhaus sowohl Aktant als auch allgegenwärtiges Objekt der über die Mauer hinweg stattfindenden Kommunikation und der konvergierenden bzw. mit einander verflochtenen Konflikte. Dies sollte mittel- und langfristig Spuren im Bereich der Medien (mit der Gründung neuer, alternativer Medien) wie auch im Stadtbild selbst hinterlassen

The FCTOOLS User Manual (Version 1.0)

We describe a set of modular extensions to our Auto/Graph verification toolset for networks of communicating processes. These software additions operate from a common file exchange format for automata and networks, called {\sc fc2}. Tool functionalities comprise graphical depiction of objects, global model construction from hierarchical descriptions, various types of model reductions and of verification of simple modal properties by observers, counterexample production and visualisation. We illustrate typical verification sessions conducted on usual academic examples: dining philosophers, mutual exclusion algorithms and round-robin schedulers. Based on previous experience of drastic state explosion problems we aim here at efficiency in implementation. We use both explicit representation techniques and implicit techniques such as {\sc BDD}s, with functional overlap at places

Is sweep-flocculation relevant to saponite aggregation?

International audienceSynthetic saponites with various Cationic Exchange Capacities were aggregated at pH 8.0 in a stirred vessel by hydrolyzed aluminum species. Floc growth was followed by Fraunhoffer laser diffraction and the efficiency of clarification was assessed from conventional residual turbidity and sediment volume measurements. We show that the aggregation mechanisms are layer-charge dependent and can not be described by the widely accepted sweep flocculation model
