    Although genomes from many edible mushrooms are sequenced, studies on fungal micro RNAs (miRNAs) are scarce. Most of the bioinformatic tools are designed for plants or animals, but the processing and expression of fungal miRNAs share similarities and differences with both kingdoms. Moreover, since mushroom species such as Agaricus bisporus (A. bisporus, white button mushroom) are frequently consumed as food, controversial discussions are still evaluating whether their miRNAs might or might not be assimilated, perhaps within extracellular vesicles (i.e., exosomes). Therefore, the A. bisporus RNA-seq was studied in order to identify potential de novo miRNA-like small RNAs (milRNAs) that might allow their later detection in diet. Results pointed to 1 already known and 37 de novo milRNAs. Three milRNAs were selected for RT-qPCR experiments. Precursors and mature milRNAs were found in the edible parts (caps and stipes), validating the predictions carried out in silico. When their potential gene targets were investigated, results pointed that most were involved in primary and secondary metabolic regulation. However, when the human transcriptome is used as the target, the results suggest that they might interfere with important biological processes related with cancer, infection and neurodegenerative disease

    Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type VIIC: A Mexican Case Report

    Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a heterogeneous group of heritable connective tissue disorders whose primary clinicalfeatures include soft and extensible skin, articular hypermobility and tissue fragility. EDS type VIIC or ‘human dermatosparaxis’ is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by severe skin fragility and sagging redundant skin (major criteria) with a soft, doughy texture, easy bruising, premature rupture of fetal membranes and large hernias (minor criteria). Dermatosparaxis (meaning ‘tearing of skin’), which has been described in several non-human species, is a disorder of the connective tissue resulting from a deficiency of the enzyme that cleaves the registration peptide off the N-terminal end of collagen after it has been secreted from fibroblasts. We describe a Mexican case from consanguineous parents with all the phenotypical characteristics previously described, plus skeletal abnormalities

    Homocisteína, polimorfismos MTHFR C677T, A1298C y variables clínico-bioquímicas en población mexicana

    El objetivo del trabajo consistió en analizar la relación del nivel sérico de homocisteína (Hcy) con los polimorfismos de la metilentetrahidrofolato reductasa MTHFR C677T y A1298C y variables clínicas y bioquímicas en población mexicana. Se determinó el nivel de Hcy (inmunoensayo) y de polimorfismos (PCR/RFLP) en 102 individuos de la población general. El genotipo 677TT mostró asociación significativa con el peso corporal (r=0,012) y el genotipo 1298CC tuvo tendencia a asociarse con el IMC (r~0,06). Los valores séricos de Hcy en mujeres (51/102) fueron 8,33±1,86 µmol/L y en hombres (51/102) 11,64±4,15 µmol/L. La Hcy mostró asociación positiva con peso corporal (r=0,004) y asociación negativa con Hb y Hto (r=0,001). Se encontró mayor nivel de Hcy en individuos fumadores (r=0,009) y una tendencia hacia hiperhomocisteinemia en alcohólicos y en mujeres menopáusicas. No se evidenció asociación de Hcy con los polimorfismos MTHFR C677T y A1298C, sin embargo, el análisis con el modelo de herencia dominante para el polimorfismo C677T (TT+CT vs. CC) mostró un efecto semidominante (r<0,10). En este estudio, la presencia de los polimorfismos MTHFR C677T y A1298C no representó ser un factor de riesgo significativo para hiperhomocisteinemia, sin embargo, se encontraron diferencias que puntualizan la posible dependencia de los niveles de Hcy en relación con los genotipos modificados con diversos factores ambientales

    Assessment of Physicochemical Groundwater Quality and Hydrogeochemical Processes in an Area near a Municipal Landfill Site: A Case Study of the Toluca Valley

    Sanitary landfills are considered one of the main sources of contamination of water resources due to the generation of leachate with a high content of dissolved organic matter (DOM), inorganic material, and toxic elements. This study aimed to determine the influence of leachate on the physicochemical quality and hydrogeochemical processes which determine the chemical composition of groundwater in an area near a municipal sanitary landfill site. In situ parameters (pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, ORP), physicochemical parameters (HCO3−, PO43−, Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+), and dissolved organic matter were analyzed. The content of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was determined by 3D fluorescence microscopy. The presence of Cl−, NO3−, NH4+, PO43−, BOD, and COD indicated the presence of contamination. The significant correlation between NO3− and PO43− ions (r = 0.940) and DOM of anthropogenic origin in the 3D fluorescence spectra confirm that its presence in the water is associated with the municipal landfill site in question. The type of water in the area is Mg-HCO3, with a tendency to Na-HCO3 and Na-SO+-Cl. The water-rock interaction process predominates in the chemical composition of water; however, significant correlations between Na+ and Ca2+ (r = 0.876), and between K+ and Mg2+ (r = 0.980) showed that an ion exchange process had taken place. Likewise, there is enrichment by HCO3− and SO42− ions due to the mineralization of the organic matter from the leachate. The groundwater quality that supplies the study area is being affected by leachate infiltration from the sanitary landfill

    Immunologic and inflammatory processes are involved in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Human leukocyte antigen-G (HLA-G) is a negative regulator of the immune response. This study evaluates the 14 bp Del/Ins HLA-G polymorphism in ACS and DM2. Three hundred and seventy individuals from Western Mexico were recruited and categorized into three groups: ACS (86), DM2 without coronary complications (70), and healthy subjects (214). Genotyping of the 14 bp Del/Ins HLA-G polymorphism was performed by PCR and Native-PAGE. The most common risk factors were hypertension and overweight in ACS and DM2, respectively. The genetic distribution of the 14 bp Del/Ins HLA-G polymorphism showed no significant differences between groups ( ≥ 0.23). Nonetheless, the Ins/Ins genotype was associated with high blood pressure (HBP) in the DM2 group (OR c = 1.65, = 0.02). The genetic recessive model showed similar findings (OR c = 3.03, = 0.04). No association was found in ACS, with a of 0.05; nevertheless, the prevalence of Ins/Ins carriers was quite similar to that found in the DM2-HBP group. The 14 bp Del/Ins HLA-G polymorphism was not a susceptibility factor for ACS or DM2; however, the Ins/Ins genotype might have contributed to the development of HBP in the studied groups
