    Characterization of Catalan red wines by pattern recognition methods

    52 red wines produced in the Tarragona province (Catalonia, Spain), 1983 vintage, belonging to 4 different regions, namely Priorat, Terra Alta, Camp de Tarragona and Falset, have been characterized and differentiated according to their geographic origin on the basis of 17 parameters measured for each sample and 3 pattern recognition methods: Statistical Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, K-Nearest Neighbour and Linear Learning Machine. The meta! ions manganese, magnesium, iron and sodium, along with the enological parameters ethanol content, alkalinity of ashes and titratable acidity have been found as the most relevant ones in this study. The lack of varietal differences together with quite similar climatic and cultural conditions due to the geographic contiguity of the studied zones leads to a maximum prediction ability of 87 % with the Linear Learning Machine method

    Real examples of surface reconstructions determined by direct methods

    In this work the modulus sum function is briefly introduced and its applicability to the automated interpretation of projections of reconstructed surfaces shown. The selected real examples have been arranged according to the interpretation complexity of the respective two-dimensional Patterson maps and correspond to the most common types of surface reconstructions represented by: (i) a shift of the surface atoms from their ideal positions. This type of reconstruction is often found on (001) semiconductor surfaces and its most characteristic structural feature is the pairing of neighbouring surface atoms forming dimers, e.g., the In0.04Ga0.96As(001)-p(4 × 2) reconstructed surface. (ii) Different atom types occupying the surface sites. This type of reconstruction can be induced by both the adsorption of deposited atoms onto the surface, e.g. Sb/Ge(113)-c(2 × 2), or a new structural arrangement of the substrate caused by the adsorption of external molecules onto the surface, e.g. C60/Au(110)-p(6 × 5) reconstructed surface

    ZbbˉZ\to b\bar b in U(1)RU(1)_R Symmetric Supersymmetry

    We compute the one-loop corrections to the ZbbˉZ \to b\bar{b} vertex in the U(1)RU(1)_R symmetric minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. We find that the predicted value of RbR_b is consistent with experiment if the mass of the lighter top squark is no more than 180 GeV. Furthermore, other data combines to place a lower bound of 88 GeV on the mass of the light top squark.     Why does cultural policy change? Policy discourse and policy subsystem : a case study of the evolution of cultural policy in Catalonia

However, cultural policies have been unable to respond to the dilemmas and expectations that this new order presents. In order to appreciate the consequences of this process, it is essential to gain a better understanding of cultural policy change dynamics. This paper develops a framework for analysing cultural policy stability and change and applies it to the evolution of cultural policy in Catalonia. Both policy continuity and change are conditioned by the evolution of policy discourse on culture and the characteristics of the cultural policy subsystem. Within this framework, we also take into account the role of factors that are exogenous to the cultural domain. Lastly this paper addresses particular characteristics of cultural policy change in regions or stateless nations

    Higgs lepton flavour violation: UV completions and connection to neutrino masses

    We study lepton violating Higgs (HLFV) decays, first from the effective field theory (EFT) point of view, and then analysing the different high-energy realizations of the operators of the EFT, highlighting the most promising models. We argue why two Higgs doublet models can have a BR(h → τ μ) ∼ 0.01, and why this rate is suppressed in all other realizations including vector-like leptons. We further discuss HLFV in the context of neutrino mass models: in most cases it is generated at one loop giving always BR(h → τ μ) < 10−4 and typically much less, which is beyond experimental reach. However, both the Zee model and extended left-right symmetric models contain extra SU(2) doublets coupled to leptons and could in principle account for the observed excess, with interesting connections between HLFV and neutrino parameters

    Targeting tumor-associated macrophages by anti-tumor Chinese materia medica

    Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a key role in all stages of tumorigenesis and tumor progression. TAMs secrete different kinds of cytokines, chemokines, and enzymes to affect the progression, metastasis, and resistance to therapy depending on their state of reprogramming. Therapeutic benefit in targeting TAMs suggests that macrophages are attractive targets for cancer treatment. Chinese materia medica (CMM) is an important approach for treating cancer in China and in the Asian region. According to the theory of Chinese medicine (CM) and its practice, some prescriptions of CM regulate the body's internal environment possibly including the remodeling the tumor microenvironment (TME). Here we briefly summarize the pivotal effects of TAMs in shaping the TME and promoting tumorigenesis, invasion, metastasis and immunosuppression. Furthermore, we illustrate the effects and mechanisms of CMM targeting TAMs in antitumor therapy. Finally, we reveal the CMM's dual-regulatory and multi-targeting functions on regulating TAMs, and hopefully, provide the theoretical basis for CMM clinical practice related to cancer therapy

    Chronic intermittent hypoxia induces local inflammation of the rat carotid body via functional upregulation of proinflammatory cytokine pathways

    Maladaptive changes in the carotid body (CB) induced by chronic intermittent hypoxia (IH) account for the pathogenesis of cardiovascular morbidity in patients with sleep-disordered breathing. We postulated that the proinflammatory cytokines, namely interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and cytokine receptors (IL-1r1, gp130 and TNFr1) locally expressed in the rat CB play a pathophysiological role in IH-induced CB inflammation. Results showed increased levels of oxidative stress (serum 8-isoprostane and nitrotyrosine in the CB) in rats with 7-day IH treatment resembling recurrent apneic conditions when compared with the normoxic control. Local inflammation shown by the amount of ED1-containing cells (macrophage infiltration) and the gene transcripts of NADPH oxidase subunits (gp91phox and p22phox) and chemokines (MCP-1, CCR2, MIP-1α, MIP-1β and ICAM-1) in the CB were significantly more in the hypoxic group than in the control. In addition, the cytokines and receptors were expressed in the lobules of chemosensitive glomus cells containing tyrosine hydroxylase and the levels of expressions were significantly increased in the hypoxic group. Exogenous cytokines elevated the intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) response to acute hypoxia in the dissociated glomus cells. The effect of cytokines on the [Ca2+]i response was significantly greater in the hypoxic than in the normoxic group. Moreover, daily treatment of IH rats with anti-inflammatory drugs (dexamethasone or ibuprofen) attenuated the levels of oxidative stress, gp91phox expression and macrophage infiltration in the CB. Collectively, these results suggest that the upregulated expression of proinflammatory cytokine pathways could mediate the local inflammation and functional alteration of the CB under chronic IH conditions
