This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity, biocompatibility and osteoinductive profile of a new MTA based material (MTA Flow) compared to AH plus and MTA fillapex. Cell viability was evaluated in periodontal ligament stem cells by the MTT test. The inflammatory response and the osteoinductive profile were evaluated in the connective tissue of 24 male rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus, Rodentia, Mammalia of the Wistar line) weighing between 300 and 350g. The animals were divided into 4 experimental groups. Four polyethylene tubes were implanted on the back of each animal, one empty and another three filled with one of the materials. After 7, 30 and 60 days, 8 animals were killed with inhaled anesthetic. The tube and adjacent subcutaneous tissue were removed and fixed in 10% formalin solution. The material was analyzed histologically for the inflammatory process, fibrous condensation and presence of abscess. Subsequently, the immunohistochemical analysis was performed to identify collagen I, osteopontin, bone sialoprotein and bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP-4). Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA, complemented by the Tukey test using SPSS 15.0. MTA Flow was shown to be non-cytotoxic and to have excellent biocompatibility with lower inflammatory reaction in rat subcutaneous tissue compared to AH Plus and MTA Fillapex. In addition, the MTA Flow showed to be able to stimulate the mineralization process, being an advantage over the other materials tested

Tipuana tipu (Benth.)

The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of gingivitis and calculus and their predictors in a population of adults in Brazil. A representative sample of 758 adults from 35 to 59 years of age from Porto Alegre city was examined. A structured questionnaire was applied. The Gingival Bleeding Index and the presence of calculus were measured at 4 sites/tooth. Multivariable logistic models were fitted to determine the predictors for gingival bleeding at >20% of sites. Overall, 96.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]=95.1-98.0) of individuals had ≥ 1 bleeding site. The mean percentages of sites with gingivitis and calculus were 26.1% and 44.6%, respectively. The odds of gingivitis decreased by ~45% for individuals ≥40 years old compared to younger adults. Individuals that never performed interproximal cleaning and non-whites had an approximately two times higher chance of gingivitis. Smokers had lower chances of gingivitis than never-smokers (odds ratio=0.40; 95% CI=0.24-0.68). Higher numbers of missing teeth were associated with higher chances of gingivitis. The percentage of calculus was significantly associated with skin color, education, proximal cleaning, smoking exposure, dental visits, and tooth loss. It can be concluded that the occurrence of gingivitis and calculus was high in this Brazilian population, and it was associated with age, skin color, education, self-reported proximal cleaning, smoking, dental care, and tooth loss

    Get PDF
Objective: To evaluate and compare the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation combined with conventional physical therapy on muscle thickness in critically ill patients. Design: Double-blind, randomized controlled trial. Patients: Twenty-five patients participated in the study. Methods: Patients on mechanical ventilation for 24–48 h were randomized to an intervention group (neuromuscular electrical stimulation + conventional physical therapy) or a conventional group (sham neuromuscular electrical stimulation + conventional physical therapy). Primary outcome was thickness of the rectus abdominis and chest muscles, determined on cross-sectional ultrasound images before and after the intervention. Results: Eleven patients were included in the intervention group and 14 in the conventional group. After neuromuscular electrical stimulation, rectus abdominis muscle thickness and chest muscle thickness were preserved in the intervention group, whereas there was a significant reduction in thickness in the conventional group, with a significant difference between groups. There was a significant difference between groups in length of stay in the intensive care unit, with shorter length of stay in the intervention group. Conclusion: There was no change in rectus abdominis and chest muscle thickness in the intervention group. A significant decrease was found in these measures in the conventional group

Fractal signature as a rotational modulation and stellar noise classifier based on the active Kepler stars

In this study, we report on the analysis of 701 stars in a solar vicinity defined in three categories namely subsolar, solar, and supersolar with rotation periods between 1 and 70 days, based on rotational modulation signatures inferred from time series from the Kepler mission's Public Archives. In our analysis, we performed an initial selection based on the rotation period and position in the period-H diagram, where H denotes the Hurst exponent extracted from fractal analysis. To refine our analysis, we applied a fractal approach known as the R/S method, taking into account the fluctuations of the features associated with photometric modulation at different time intervals and the fractality traces that are present in the time series of our sample. In this sense, we computed the so-called Hurst exponent for the referred stars and found that it can provide a strong discriminant of rotational modulation and background noise behavior, going beyond what can be achieved with solely the rotation period itself. Furthermore, our results emphasize that the rotation period of stars is scaled by the exponent H which increases following the increase in the rotation period. Finally, our approach suggests that the referred exponent may be a powerful rotational modulation and noise classifier.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, submitted to BJ
