    Environmental control on coccolithophore morphology : do modern species yield information that is transferable to the geological past?

    It is generally assumed that calcareous nannofossils conserve palaeoenvironmental information from the time of their formation. Changes in coccolith morphology can result from physiological responses to environmental drivers. Temperature, salinity, nutrient concentration, light and carbonate chemistry are among the environmental drivers that impact extant coccolithophores and may alter coccolith size, as well as coccosphere size and morphology. Many palaeoreconstruction studies have assessed the biological responses of living coccolithophore species to environmental drivers with the expectation that it is possible to use this information for calibrating the biomineralisation responses of ancient coccolithophores. However, there is a large uncertainty concerning whether the morphological responses of living coccolithophores to environmental changes are similar to the morphological responses of fossil species, when you consider the fact that millions of years of evolutionary adaptation lie between the extant species and their fossilised ancestors. In order to test this caveat, we examined four extant species (Emiliania huxleyi, Gephyrocapsa oceanica , Coccolithus pelagicus subsp. braarudii and Pleurochrysis carterae), which have been evolutionarily distinct for millions of years. We cultured them under changing environmental conditions in order to evaluate any changes in coccolith morphology. Our underlying hypothesis was that if the species showed a uniform reaction to any of the tested environmental drivers, then this would suggests that the same response may well occur over geological timescales, and that coccolith morphological changes could serve as a palaeo-proxy for that particular driver. Our experiments demonstrated that the four species had no common response to changing light intensity, Mg/Ca, nutrient content or temperature with respect to coccolith size. These results revealed the difficulties in using coccolith size as a proxy for environmental drivers. One exception was an increase in malformations when coccolithophores were grown under excess CO2 , and these data provided evidence that this response variable can be used as a palaeo-proxy for episodes of acute carbonate chemistry perturbations

    Interactive Effects of Ocean Acidification and Warming on Growth, Fitness and Survival of the Cold-Water Coral Lophelia pertusa under Different Food Availabilities

    Cold-water corals are important bioengineers that provide structural habitat for a diverse species community. About 70% of the presently known scleractinian cold-water corals are expected to be exposed to corrosive waters by the end of this century due to ocean acidification. At the same time, the corals will experience a steady warming of their environment. Studies on the sensitivity of cold-water corals to climate change mainly concentrated on single stressors in short-term incubation approaches, thus not accounting for possible long-term acclimatisation and the interactive effects of multiple stressors. Besides, preceding studies did not test for possible compensatory effects of a change in food availability. In this study a multifactorial long-term experiment (6 months) was conducted with end-of-the-century scenarios of elevated pCO2 and temperature levels in order to examine the acclimatisation potential of the cosmopolitan cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa to future climate change related threats. For the first time multiple ocean change impacts including the role of the nutritional status were tested on L. pertusa with regard to growth, “fitness,” and survival. Our results show that while L. pertusa is capable of calcifying under elevated CO2 and temperature, its condition (fitness) is more strongly influenced by food availability rather than changes in seawater chemistry. Whereas growth rates increased at elevated temperature (+4°C), they decreased under elevated CO2 concentrations (~800 ÎŒatm). No difference in net growth was detected when corals were exposed to the combination of increased CO2 and temperature compared to ambient conditions. A 10-fold higher food supply stimulated growth under elevated temperature, which was not observed in the combined treatment. This indicates that increased food supply does not compensate for adverse effects of ocean acidification and underlines the importance of considering the nutritional status in studies investigating organism responses under environmental changes

    Phytoplankton response to increased nickel in the context of ocean alkalinity enhancement

    Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is considered one of the most promising approaches to actively remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere by accelerating the natural process of rock weathering. This approach involves introducing alkaline substances sourced from natural mineral deposits, such as olivine, basalt, and carbonates or obtained from industrial waste products such as steel slag, into seawater and dispersing them over coastal areas. Some of these natural and industrial substances contain trace metals, which would be released into the oceans along with the alkalinity enhancement. The trace metals could serve as micronutrients for marine organisms at low concentrations but could potentially become toxic at high concentrations, adversely affecting marine biota. To comprehensively assess the feasibility of OAE, it is crucial to understand how the phytoplankton, which forms the base of marine food webs, responds to ocean alkalinization and associated trace metal perturbations. As one of the most abundant metals in OAE source materials, understanding the impacts of nickel (Ni) on the phytoplankton is critical for OAE assessment. In this study, we investigated the influence of nickel (Ni) on three representative phytoplankton species over a gradient of nine Ni concentrations (from 0 to 100 ”mol L−1 with 12 ”mol L−1 synthetic organic ligand). The impacts of elevated Ni varied among the tested phytoplankton species. The coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi and the dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae exhibited a growth rate inhibition of about 30 % and 20 %, respectively, at the highest Ni concentrations. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50, at which the growth rate is inhibited by 50 %) of both species exceeded the tested range of Ni. This suggests that both species were only mildly affected by the elevated Ni concentrations. In contrast, the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii displayed a considerably higher sensitivity to Ni, with a 60 % growth rate inhibition at the highest Ni concentration and an IC50 value of 63.9 ”mol L−1. In conclusion, the variability in phytoplankton sensitivity to Ni exposure suggests that for OAE applications with Ni-rich materials caution is required and critical toxic thresholds for Ni must be avoided.</p

    Ocean Acidification-Induced Food Quality Deterioration Constrains Trophic Transfer

    Our present understanding of ocean acidification (OA) impacts on marine organisms caused by rapidly rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is almost entirely limited to single species responses. OA consequences for food web interactions are, however, still unknown. Indirect OA effects can be expected for consumers by changing the nutritional quality of their prey. We used a laboratory experiment to test potential OA effects on algal fatty acid (FA) composition and resulting copepod growth. We show that elevated CO2 significantly changed the FA concentration and composition of the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana, which constrained growth and reproduction of the copepod Acartia tonsa. A significant decline in both total FAs (28.1 to 17.4 fg cell−1) and the ratio of long-chain polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids (PUFA:SFA) of food algae cultured under elevated (750 ”atm) compared to present day (380 ”atm) pCO2 was directly translated to copepods. The proportion of total essential FAs declined almost tenfold in copepods and the contribution of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) tripled at high CO2. This rapid and reversible CO2-dependent shift in FA concentration and composition caused a decrease in both copepod somatic growth and egg production from 34 to 5 eggs female−1 day−1. Because the diatom-copepod link supports some of the most productive ecosystems in the world, our study demonstrates that OA can have far-reaching consequences for ocean food webs by changing the nutritional quality of essential macromolecules in primary producers that cascade up the food web

    Availability of phosphate for phytoplankton and bacteria and of labile organic carbon for bacteria at different pCO<sub>2</sub> levels in a mesocosm study

    International audienceAvailability of phosphate for phytoplankton and bacteria and of labile organic carbon for bacteria at different pCO2 levels were studied in a mesocosm experiment (PeECE III). Using nutrient-depleted SW Norwegian fjord waters, three different levels of pCO2 (350 ?atm: 1×CO2; 750 ?atm: 2×CO2; 1050 ?atm: 3×CO2) were set up, and nitrate and phosphate were added at the start of the experiment in order to induce a phytoplankton bloom. Despite similar responses of total particulate P concentration and phosphate turnover time at the three different pCO2 levels, the size distribution of particulate P and 33PO4 uptake suggested that phosphate transferred to the >10 ?m fraction was greater in the 3×CO2 mesocosm during the first 6?10 days when phosphate concentration was high. During the period of phosphate depletion (after Day 12), specific phosphate affinity and specific alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) suggested a P-deficiency (i.e. suboptimal phosphate supply) but not a P-limitation for the phytoplankton and bacterial community at the three different pCO2 levels. Although specific phosphate affinity and specific APA tended to be higher in 3×CO2 than in 2×CO2 and 1×CO2 mesocosms during the phosphate depletion period, no statistical differences were found. Responses of specific glucose affinity for bacteria were similar at the three different pCO2 levels. Measured specific glucose affinities were consistently much lower than the theoretical maximum predicted from the diffusion-limited model, suggesting that bacterial growth was not limited by the availability of labile dissolved organic carbon. These results suggest that availability of phosphate and glucose was similar at the three different pCO2 levels

    CO2-induced seawater acidification affects physiological performance of the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

    CO2/pH perturbation experiments were carried out under two different pCO2 levels (39.3 and 101.3 Pa) to evaluate effects of CO2-induced ocean acidification on the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. After acclimation (>20 generations) to ambient and elevated CO2 conditions (with corresponding pH values of 8.15 and 7.80, respectively), growth and photosynthetic carbon fixation rates of high CO2 grown cells were enhanced by 5% and 12%, respectively, and dark respiration stimulated by 34% compared to cells grown at ambient CO2. The half saturation constant (Km) for carbon fixation (dissolved inorganic carbon, DIC) increased by 20% under the low pH and high CO2 condition, reflecting a decreased affinity for HCO3– or/and CO2 and down-regulated carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM). In the high CO2 grown cells, the electron transport rate from photosystem II (PSII) was photoinhibited to a greater extent at high levels of photosynthetically active radiation, while non-photochemical quenching was reduced compared to low CO2 grown cells. This was probably due to the down-regulation of CCM, which serves as a sink for excessive energy. The balance between these positive and negative effects on diatom productivity will be a key factor in determining the net effect of rising atmospheric CO2 on ocean primary production
