    Aerodynamic characteristics at Mach 6 of a hypersonic research airplane concept having a 70 deg swept delta wing

    The hypersonic aerodynamic characteristics of an air-launched, delta-wing research aircraft concept were investigated at Mach 6. The effect of various components such as nose shape, wing camber, wing location, center vertical tail, wing tip fins, forward delta wing, engine nacelle, and speed brakes was also studied. Tests were conducted with a 0.021 scale model at a Reynolds number, based on model length, of 10.5 million and over an angel of attack range from -4 deg to 20 deg. Results show that most configurations with a center vertical tail have static longitudinal stability at trim, static directional stability at angles of attack up to 12 deg, and static lateral stability throughout the angle of attack range. Configurations with wing tip fins generally have static longitudinal stability at trim, have lateral stability at angles of attack above 8 deg, and are directionally unstable over the angle of attack range

    Promoting Financial Capability of Incarcerated Women for Community Reentry: A Call to Social Workers

    Female incarceration rates are increasing at unprecedented rates. The majority of women are poor single mothers, serving sentences for nonviolent drug-related and property offenses. Among challenges faced when transitioning back into society are a history of interpersonal violence and financial instability. This study examines literature with regard to the barriers women experience with an emphasis on financial struggles and explores outcomes of one initiative to begin addressing the financial capability of women in a minimum security prison. Findings reveal women benefited from the class experience. Social workers are called upon for additional financial capability programming and research in this area

    'Reaching the hard to reach' - lessons learned from the VCS (voluntary and community Sector). A qualitative study.

    Background The notion 'hard to reach' is a contested and ambiguous term that is commonly used within the spheres of social care and health, especially in discourse around health and social inequalities. There is a need to address health inequalities and to engage in services the marginalized and socially excluded sectors of society. Methods This paper describes a pilot study involving interviews with representatives from eight Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations . The purpose of the study was to explore the notion of 'hard to reach' and perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to accessing services for 'hard to reach' groups from a voluntary and community sector perspective. Results The 'hard to reach' may include drug users, people living with HIV, people from sexual minority communities, asylum seekers, refugees, people from black and ethnic minority communities, and homeless people although defining the notion of the 'hard to reach' is not straight forward. It may be that certain groups resist engaging in treatment services and are deemed hard to reach by a particular service or from a societal stance. There are a number of potential barriers for people who may try and access services, including people having bad experiences in the past; location and opening times of services and how services are funded and managed. A number of areas of commonality are found in terms of how access to services for 'hard to reach' individuals and groups could be improved including: respectful treatment of service users, establishing trust with service users, offering service flexibility, partnership working with other organisations and harnessing service user involvement. Conclusions: If health services are to engage with groups that are deemed 'hard to reach' and marginalised from mainstream health services, the experiences and practices for engagement from within the VCS may serve as useful lessons for service improvement for statutory health services

    Primakuin yang digunakan sebagai profilaksis malaria terbukti efektif dan diterima dengan baik oleh tubuh manusia yang normal terhadap aktivitas enzim 6 glukosa-6 fosfat dehidrogenase (G-6PD). Pemeriksaan laboratoris klinik adalah bagian dari uji coba secara acak dengan kontrol plasebo dalam rangka mengevaluasi penggunaan primakuin sebagai profilaksis pada penduduk transmigran yang tidak kebal di Irian Jaya. Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap 129 pria Jawa dewasa yang normal G-6PDnya. Pemeriksaan hematologi, fungsi hati dan ginjal, dan pemeriksaan limfosit dilakukan berulang kali selama waktu penelitian profilaksis dilakukan untuk menjamin keamanan dari sukarelawan tersebut dan mengawasi Perubahan yang mungkin terjadi akibat obat profilaksis. Seperti yang diperkirakan, pengguna primakuin tidak menunjukkan gejala peningkatan methemoglobin yang kembali dalam batas normal setelah 7 hari pemberian dosis terakhir. Pada akhir penelitian (12 bulan profilaksis) nilai hematologi, fungsi hati dan ginjal, dan nilai limfosit dari kelompok primakuin sebanding dengan kelompok plasebo, dan berada dalam batas nilai normal untuk orang Indonesia.Hasil penelitian ini memberikan masukan adanya keluhan fisik yang sedikit dari sukarelawan pengguna profilaksis primakuin. Untuk membuktikan hasil penelitian ini dan mempersiapkan penggunaan secara umum primakuin untuk profilaksis malaria, perlu dilakukan uji coba lebih lanjut keamanan primakuin. Di Indonesia, primakuin tidak digunakan sebagai profilaksis dan laporan hasil penelitian ini hendaknya tidak ditafsirkan sebagai laporan keamanan dari primakuin

    The impact of Loa loa microfilaraemia on research subject retention during a whole sporozoite malaria vaccine trial in Equatorial Guinea

    Loa loa microfilariae were found on thick blood smears (TBSs) from 8 of 300 (2.7%) residents of Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, during a Plasmodium falciparum sporozoite malaria vaccine clinical trial. Only one subject was found to have microfilaraemia on his first exam; parasites were not discovered in the other seven until subsequent TBSs were performed, at times many weeks into the study. All infected individuals were asymptomatic, and were offered treatment with diethylcarbamazine, per national guidelines. L. loa microfilaraemia complicated the enrolment or continued participation of these eight trial subjects, and only one was able to complete all study procedures. If ruling out loiasis is deemed to be important during clinical trials, tests that are more sensitive than TBSs should be performed

    Increased levels of anti-PfCSP antibodies in post-pubertal females versus males immunized with PfSPZ Vaccine does not translate into increased protective efficacy

    BACKGROUND: While prior research has shown differences in the risk of malaria infection and sickness between males and females, little is known about sex differences in vaccine-induced immunity to malaria. Identifying such differences could elucidate important aspects of malaria biology and facilitate development of improved approaches to malaria vaccination. METHODS: Using a standardized enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, IgG antibodies to the major surface protein on Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) sporozoites (SPZ), the Pf circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP), were measured before and two weeks after administration of a PfSPZ-based malaria vaccine (PfSPZ Vaccine) to 5-month to 61-year-olds in 11 clinical trials in Germany, the US and five countries in Africa, to determine if there were differences in vaccine elicited antibody response between males and females and if these differences were associated with differential protection against naturally transmitted Pf malaria (Africa) or controlled human malaria infection (Germany, the US and Africa). RESULTS: Females >/= 11 years of age made significantly higher levels of antibodies to PfCSP than did males in most trials, while there was no indication of such differences in infants or children. Although adult females had higher levels of antibodies, there was no evidence of improved protection compared to males. In 2 of the 7 trials with sufficient data, protected males had significantly higher levels of antibodies than unprotected males, and in 3 other trials protected females had higher levels of antibodies than did unprotected females. CONCLUSION: Immunization with PfSPZ Vaccine induced higher levels of antibodies in post-pubertal females but showed equivalent protection in males and females. We conclude that the increased antibody levels in post-pubertal females did not contribute substantially to improved protection. We hypothesize that while antibodies to PfCSP (and PfSPZ) may potentially contribute directly to protection, they primarily correlate with other, potentially protective immune mechanisms, such as antibody dependent and antibody independent cellular responses in the liver

Researchers are increasingly asking children and young people to complete self-report questionnaires to better understand their health and wellbeing. Often, this research is carried out in schools, partly because this is a useful way of engaging with large groups of children and young people, but also as a way of assessing local needs and evaluating interventions

    Confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in Scottish neonates 2020-2022: a national, population-based cohort study

    Objectives: To examine neonates in Scotland aged 0–27 days with SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by viral testing; the risk of confirmed neonatal infection by maternal and infant characteristics; and hospital admissions associated with confirmed neonatal infections. Design: Population-based cohort study. Setting and population: All live births in Scotland, 1 March 2020–31 January 2022. Results: There were 141 neonates with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection over the study period, giving an overall infection rate of 153 per 100 000 live births (141/92 009, 0.15%). Among infants born to women with confirmed infection around the time of birth, the confirmed neonatal infection rate was 1812 per 100 000 live births (15/828, 1.8%). Two-thirds (92/141, 65.2%) of neonates with confirmed infection had an associated admission to neonatal or (more commonly) paediatric care. Six of these babies (6/92, 6.5%) were admitted to neonatal and/or paediatric intensive care; however, none of these six had COVID-19 recorded as their main diagnosis. There were no neonatal deaths among babies with confirmed infection. Implications and relevance: Confirmed neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection was uncommon over the first 23 months of the pandemic in Scotland. Secular trends in the neonatal confirmed infection rate broadly followed those seen in the general population, although at a lower level. Maternal confirmed infection at birth was associated with an increased risk of neonatal confirmed infection. Two-thirds of neonates with confirmed infection had an associated admission to hospital, with resulting implications for the baby, family and services, although their outcomes were generally good. Ascertainment of confirmed infection depends on the extent of testing, and this is likely to have varied over time and between groups: the extent of unconfirmed infection is inevitably unknown
