Laserlight visual cueing device for freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease: a case study of the biomechanics involved
AbstractBackground: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a serious gait disorder affecting up to two-thirds of people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Cueing has been explored as a method of generating motor execution using visual transverse lines on the floor. However, the impact of a laser light visual cue remains unclear. Objective: To determine the biomechanical effect of a laser cane on FOG in a participant with PD compared to a healthy age- and gender-matched control. Methods: The participant with PD and healthy control were given a task of initiating gait from standing. Electromyography (EMG) data were collected from the tibialis anterior (TA) and the medial gastrocnemius (GS) muscles using an 8-channel system. A 10-camera system (Qualisys) recorded movement in 6 degrees of freedom and a calibrated anatomical system technique was used to construct a full body model. Center of mass (COM) and center of pressure (COP) were the main outcome measures. Results: The uncued condition showed that separation of COM and COP took longer and was of smaller magnitude than the cued condition. EMG activity revealed prolonged activation of GS, with little to no TA activity. The cued condition showed earlier COM and COP separation. There was reduced fluctuation in GS, with abnormal, early bursts of TA activity. Step length improved in the cued condition compared to the uncued condition. Conclusion: Laserlight visual cueing improved step length beyond a non-cued condition for this patient indicating improved posture and muscle control
A multistage linear array assignment problem
The implementation of certain algorithms on parallel processing computing architectures can involve partitioning contiguous elements into a fixed number of groups, each of which is to be handled by a single processor. It is desired to find an assignment of elements to processors that minimizes the sum of the maximum workloads experienced at each stage. This problem can be viewed as a multi-objective network optimization problem. Polynomially-bounded algorithms are developed for the case of two stages, whereas the associated decision problem (for an arbitrary number of stages) is shown to be NP-complete. Heuristic procedures are therefore proposed and analyzed for the general problem. Computational experience with one of the exact problems, incorporating certain pruning rules, is presented with one of the exact problems. Empirical results also demonstrate that one of the heuristic procedures is especially effective in practice

CFHT AO Imaging of the CLASS Gravitational Lens System B1359+154
We present adaptive optics imaging of the CLASS gravitational lens system
B1359+154 obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) in the
infrared K band. The observations show at least three brightness peaks within
the ring of lensed images, which we identify as emission from multiple lensing
galaxies. The results confirm the suspected compound nature of the lens, as
deduced from preliminary mass modeling. The detection of several additional
nearby galaxies suggests that B1359+154 is lensed by the compact core of a
small galaxy group. We attempted to produce an updated lens model based on the
CFHT observations and new 5-GHz radio data obtained with the MERLIN array, but
there are too few constraints to construct a realistic model at this time. The
uncertainties inherent with modeling compound lenses make B1359+154 a
challenging target for Hubble constant determination through the measurement of
differential time delays. However, time delays will offer additional
constraints to help pin down the mass model. This lens system therefore
presents a unique opportunity to directly measure the mass distribution of a

Polarization morphology of SiO masers in the circumstellar envelope of the AGB star R Cassiopeiae
Silicon monoxide maser emission has been detected in the circumstellar
envelopes of many evolved stars in various vibrationally-excited rotational
transitions. It is considered a good tracer of the wind dynamics close to the
photosphere of the star. We have investigated the polarization morphology in
the circumstellar envelope of an AGB star, R Cas. We mapped the linear and
circular polarization of SiO masers in the v=1, J=1-0 transition. The linear
polarization is typically a few tens of percent while the circular polarization
is a few percent. The fractional polarization tends to be higher for emission
of lower total intensity. We found that, in some isolated features the
fractional linear polarization appears to exceed 100%. We found the Faraday
rotation is not negligible but is ~15 deg., which could produce small scale
structure in polarized emission whilst total intensity is smoother and partly
resolved out. The polarization angles vary considerably from feature to feature
but there is a tendency to favour the directions parallel or perpendicular to
the radial direction with respect to the star. In some features, the
polarization angle abruptly flips 90 deg. We found that our data are in the
regime where the model of Goldreich et al (1973) can be applied and the
polarization angle flip is caused when the magnetic field is at close to 55
deg. to the line of sight. The polarization angle configuration is consistent

Completeness of case ascertainment and survival time error in English cancer registries: impact on 1-year survival estimates.
BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that cancer registries in England are too dependent on processing of information from death certificates, and consequently that cancer survival statistics reported for England are systematically biased and too low. METHODS: We have linked routine cancer registration records for colorectal, lung, and breast cancer patients with information from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database for the period 2001-2007. Based on record linkage with the HES database, records missing in the cancer register were identified, and dates of diagnosis were revised. The effects of those revisions on the estimated survival time and proportion of patients surviving for 1 year or more were studied. Cases that were absent in the cancer register and present in the HES data with a relevant diagnosis code and a relevant surgery code were used to estimate (a) the completeness of the cancer register. Differences in survival times calculated from the two data sources were used to estimate (b) the possible extent of error in the recorded survival time in the cancer register. Finally, we combined (a) and (b) to estimate (c) the resulting differences in 1-year cumulative survival estimates. RESULTS: Completeness of case ascertainment in English cancer registries is high, around 98-99%. Using HES data added 1.9%, 0.4% and 2.0% to the number of colorectal, lung, and breast cancer registrations, respectively. Around 5-6% of rapidly fatal cancer registrations had survival time extended by more than a month, and almost 3% of rapidly fatal breast cancer records were extended by more than a year. The resulting impact on estimates of 1-year survival was small, amounting to 1.0, 0.8, and 0.4 percentage points for colorectal, lung, and breast cancer, respectively. INTERPRETATION: English cancer registration data cannot be dismissed as unfit for the purpose of cancer survival analysis. However, investigators should retain a critical attitude to data quality and sources of error in international cancer survival studies
On the edge of a new frontier: Is gerontological social work in the UK ready to meet twenty-first-century challenges?

Copyright @ 2013 The Authors.This article explores the readiness of gerontological social work in the UK for meeting the challenges of an ageing society by investigating the focus on work with older people in social work education and the scope of gerontological social work research. The discussion draws on findings from two exploratory studies: a survey of qualifying master's programmes in England and a survey of the content relating to older people over a six-year period in four leading UK social work journals. The evidence from master's programmes suggests widespread neglect of ageing in teaching content and practice learning. Social work journals present a more nuanced picture. Older people emerge within coverage of generic policy issues for adults, such as personalisation and safeguarding, and there is good evidence of the complexity of need in late life. However, there is little attention to effective social work interventions, with an increasingly diverse older population, or to the quality of gerontological social work education. The case is made for infusing content on older people throughout the social work curriculum, for extending practice learning opportunities in social work with older people and for increasing the volume and reporting of gerontological social work research.Brunel Institute for Ageing Studie
ALMA data suggest the presence of a spiral structure in the inner wind of CW Leo
(abbreviated) We aim to study the inner wind of the well-known AGB star CW
Leo. Different diagnostics probing different geometrical scales have pointed
toward a non-homogeneous mass-loss process: dust clumps are observed at
milli-arcsec scale, a bipolar structure is seen at arcsecond-scale and
multi-concentric shells are detected beyond 1". We present the first ALMA Cycle
0 band 9 data around 650 GHz. The full-resolution data have a spatial
resolution of 0".42x0".24, allowing us to study the morpho-kinematical
structure within ~6". Results: We have detected 25 molecular lines. The
emission of all but one line is spatially resolved. The dust and molecular
lines are centered around the continuum peak position. The dust emission has an
asymmetric distribution with a central peak flux density of ~2 Jy. The
molecular emission lines trace different regions in the wind acceleration
region and suggest that the wind velocity increases rapidly from about 5 R*
almost reaching the terminal velocity at ~11 R*. The channel maps for the
brighter lines show a complex structure; specifically for the 13CO J=6-5 line
different arcs are detected within the first few arcseconds. The curved
structure present in the PV map of the 13CO J=6-5 line can be explained by a
spiral structure in the inner wind, probably induced by a binary companion.
From modeling the ALMA data, we deduce that the potential orbital axis for the
binary system lies at a position angle of ~10-20 deg to the North-East and that
the spiral structure is seen almost edge-on. We infer an orbital period of 55
yr and a binary separation of 25 au (or ~8.2 R*). We tentatively estimate that
the companion is an unevolved low-mass main-sequence star. The ALMA data hence
provide us for the first time with the crucial kinematical link between the
dust clumps seen at milli-arcsecond scale and the almost concentric arcs seen
