Tracing Quasar Narrow-Line Regions Across Redshift: A Library of High S/N Optical Spectra
In a single optical spectrum, the quasar narrow-line region (NLR) reveals low
density, photoionized gas in the host galaxy interstellar medium, while the
immediate vicinity of the central engine generates the accretion disk continuum
and broad emission lines. To isolate these two components, we construct a
library of high S/N optical composite spectra created from the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey (SDSS-DR7). We divide the sample into bins of continuum luminosity
and Hbeta FWHM that are used to construct median composites at different
redshift steps up to 0.75. We measure the luminosities of the narrow-emission
lines [NeV]3427, [NeIII]3870, [OIII]5007, and [OII]3728 with ionization
potentials (IPs) of 97, 40, 35, and 13.6 eV respectively. The high IP lines'
luminosities show no evidence of increase with redshift consistent with no
evolution in the AGN SED or the host galaxy ISM illuminated by the continuum.
In contrast, we find that the [OII] line becomes stronger at higher redshifts,
and we interpret this as a consequence of enhanced star formation contributing
to the [OII] emission in host galaxies at higher redshifts. The SFRs estimated
from the [OII] luminosities show a flatter increase with z than non-AGN
galaxies given our assumed AGN contribution to the [OII] luminosity. Finally,
we confirm an inverse correlation between the strength of the FeII4570 complex
and both the [OIII] EW (though not the luminosity) and the width of the Hbeta

Convict Criminology and the Struggle for Inclusion
Convict Criminology (CC) began in the early 1990s as a reaction to the then current state of academic criminology that did not adequately reflect the voices of convicted felons. Since its beginnings, CC has attempted to draw attention to a range of problems created by the criminal justice apparatus and defenders of the status quo. Dr. Joanne Belknapâs 2014 ASC presidential address and subsequent article presented an argument that stressed the importance of activism to be considered as part of criminological research. In the process, she reviewed her career and then criticized the field of Critical Criminology, in particular Convict Criminology. The article, however, ignored the numerous efforts that CC has engaged in to build an inclusive group school, movement, organization and network that includes the diverse voices of Ph.D. educated convicts and excons, and overall reflected a superficial understanding of the history and intent of Convict Criminology. This article attempts to explain the shortcomings of Belknapâs article and clarifies misunderstandings
Laserlight visual cueing device for freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease: a case study of the biomechanics involved
AbstractBackground: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a serious gait disorder affecting up to two-thirds of people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Cueing has been explored as a method of generating motor execution using visual transverse lines on the floor. However, the impact of a laser light visual cue remains unclear. Objective: To determine the biomechanical effect of a laser cane on FOG in a participant with PD compared to a healthy age- and gender-matched control. Methods: The participant with PD and healthy control were given a task of initiating gait from standing. Electromyography (EMG) data were collected from the tibialis anterior (TA) and the medial gastrocnemius (GS) muscles using an 8-channel system. A 10-camera system (Qualisys) recorded movement in 6 degrees of freedom and a calibrated anatomical system technique was used to construct a full body model. Center of mass (COM) and center of pressure (COP) were the main outcome measures. Results: The uncued condition showed that separation of COM and COP took longer and was of smaller magnitude than the cued condition. EMG activity revealed prolonged activation of GS, with little to no TA activity. The cued condition showed earlier COM and COP separation. There was reduced fluctuation in GS, with abnormal, early bursts of TA activity. Step length improved in the cued condition compared to the uncued condition. Conclusion: Laserlight visual cueing improved step length beyond a non-cued condition for this patient indicating improved posture and muscle control
Prison as Seen by Convict Criminologists
Most criminologists tend to base their view of prison on ideological assumptions gathered from secondary sources, with at best limited entry to the prison world. They nearly always get it wrong, as they systematically exclude the perspectives and real life experiences of their human subjects. These academic researchers have contributed to poor public policy that promotes the violent repression of prisoners in the USA and other countries. In response, Convict Criminologists are exâconvicts working as criminology and criminal justice professors, along with ânonâconâ associates, that insist that as a means for societies to develop humane, effective, and cost efficient prisons, we must develop ways to incorporate the voice of prisoners in our theorizing about, policy recommendations for, and management of the prison
Advanced digital modulation: Communication techniques and monolithic GaAs technology
Communications theory and practice are merged with state-of-the-art technology in IC fabrication, especially monolithic GaAs technology, to examine the general feasibility of a number of advanced technology digital transmission systems. Satellite-channel models with (1) superior throughput, perhaps 2 Gbps; (2) attractive weight and cost; and (3) high RF power and spectrum efficiency are discussed. Transmission techniques possessing reasonably simple architectures capable of monolithic fabrication at high speeds were surveyed. This included a review of amplitude/phase shift keying (APSK) techniques and the continuous-phase-modulation (CPM) methods, of which MSK represents the simplest case
Prison Research from the Inside: The Role of Convict Autoethnography
A perspective that has often been absent in criminal justice research is that of former prisoners. This article discusses the establishment, in 1997, of âconvict criminology,â a group of scholars producing research informed by their experiences of crime and the criminal justice process; that is, either those who have served time themselves or who have operated alongside prisoners as professionals in custodial settings. It is argued that such scholars face similar dilemmas to others in terms of emotionalism, but suggests that their emotions are of a different nature. While an âinsiderâ perspective cannot lay claim to scientific âobjectivity,â the article argues that the existence of emotion does not invalidate an âinsiderâ criminologistâs views. Rather, the passion engendered by the experience of incarceration can add color, context, and contour to data collection, findings, and analysis and may therefore be regarded as an essential thread in the tapestry of criminological inquiry
