Caiuajara dobruskii is a tapejarid pterosaur from the Cretaceous of the 'Cemitério dos Pterossauros' (pterosaur graveyard) site, a unique pterosaur bonebed which is located at the municipality of Cruzeiro do Oeste (Paraná, Brazil). Preliminary inferences on Caiuajara morphology were founded on a few partial skeletons, with no detail on the skull anatomy. Here we describe a new specimen from the pterosaur graveyard site, which corresponds to the most complete skull of Caiuajara dobruskii known so far. Furthermore, we describe and compare other specimens including the holotype, a paratype, and several other undescribed specimens. The new specimen preserves the posterior portion of the skull, allowing a better comprehension of its morphology and provides an appreciation of the anatomic structures of the basicranium, enabling better interpretation of this region. We also described the lower jaw of Caiuajara, reporting a unique feature of its symphyseal which adds to the diagnosis for the species. A variability in the premaxillary crest is also noted in different specimens of Caiuajara, which might be interpreted as sexual dimorphism or ontogenetic variability. Therefore, those new findings allow a better comprehension of its skull and enables a more precise comparison between the skulls of those extinct flying reptiles

In college, as in other educational contexts, not enough to acquire a body of knowledge, it is essential to think about the cognitive processes to make independent and informed decisions regarding learning. Learning goes beyond cognitive issues, emotions and the posssibilities of think over of learning are critical in the complex processes of knowledge construction. The purpose of the study is to analyze metacognitive aspects related to academic learning on first year students of Kindergarten Teacher at the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto and Intituto Superior María Inmaculada (Argentina). At the first part of the research, students answered a general questionnaire on practices and habits of study and an inventory of learning patterns: ILS (Vermunt, 1998). Then, we conducted group interviews with students in order to acknowledge different views regarding the study practices, learning and teaching in contexts of higher education. The results show that most of students require external regulations to develop learning processes. We observe some difficulties in self-regulation of reading processes, writing and study in general. It is proposed to develop innovative strategies to promote thoughtful and metacognitive practices in students concerning learning in academic contexts.Elisondo, R.; De La Barrera, ML.; Rigo, DY.; Kowszyk, DI.; Fagotti Kucharski, E.; Ricetti, A.; Siracusa, M. The purpose of this work was to develop a definition of myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia (MMM) using diagnostic criteria that would remain valid within the set of patients with chronic myeloproliferative disorders or myelodysplastic syndromes. A list of 12 names for the disease and 37 diagnostic criteria were proposed to a Consensus Panel of 12 Italian experts who ranked them in order so as to identify a core set of criteria. The Panel was then asked to score the diagnosis of 46 patient profiles as appropriate or not appropriate for MMM. Using the experts' consensus as the gold standard, the performance of 90 possible definitions of the disease obtained through the core set was evaluated. 'Myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia' ranked as the preferred name of the disease. Necessary criteria consisted of 'diffuse bone marrow fibrosis' and 'absence of Philadelphia chromosome or BCR-ABL rearrangement in peripheral blood cells'. The six optional criteria in the core set consisted of: splenomegaly of any grade; anisopoikilocytosis with tear-drop erythrocytes; the presence of circulating immature myeloid cells; the presence of circulating erythroblasts: the presence of clusters of megakaryoblasts and anomalous megakaryocytes in bone marrow sections; myeloid metaplasia. The definition of the disease with the highest final score was as follows: necessary criteria plus any other two criteria when splenomegaly is present or any four when splenomegaly is absent. The use of this definition will help to standardize the conduct and reporting of clinical studies and should help practitioners in clinical practic

Infilling methods for monthly precipitation records with poor station network density in Subtropical Argentina

    Get PDF
Precipitation plays a crucial role from a social and economic perspective in Subtropical Argentina (STAr). Therefore, it renders the need for continuous and reliable precipitation records to develop serious climatological researches. However, precipitation records in this region are frequently inhomogeneous and scarce, which makes it necessary to deal with data filling methods. Choosing the best method to complete precipitation data series relies on rain gauge network density and on the complexity of orography, among other factors. Most comparative-method studies in the literature are focused on dense station networks while, contrastingly, the STAr's station network density is remarkably poor (between 10 and 1000 times lower). The research aims at assessing the performance of several interpolation methods in STAr. In this sense, the performance of a large number of interpolation methods was evaluated for dry and wet seasons, interpolating raw monthly data and their anomalies applied to different time-series subsets. In general, most methods performances improve when applied to anomalies in the seasonal time-series subset. Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) stands out as the method with the best performance for infilling precipitation records for most of the regions regardless of orography or season. Despite the bibliography invokes that kriging interpolation methods are the best ones, in this work the performance of kriging methods was similar to the one of the Inverse Distance Weighted method (IDW) and the Angular Distance Weighted method (ADW, the method used to generate CRU precipitation dataset).Fil: Hurtado, Santiago Ignacio. Selenium enhances glutathione peroxidase activity and prostacyclin release in ultured human endothelial cells. Concurrent effects on mRNA levels

Selenium (Se) is an essential component of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), an enzyme that protects cells by reducing intracellular peroxides. Impaired Se status and GSH-Px activity seem associated with increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases. This study reports the effects of Se supplementation on GSH-Px activity, on prostacyclin (PGI2) production, on 12-hydroxy-eicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE) levels, and on GSH-Px mRNA expression in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Se-enriched HUVEC showed significant increase of both GSH-Px activity and thrombin-stimulated production of PGI2 in the presence of stable concentrations of 12-HETE. On the other hand, an inverse correlation between Se concentrations in culture media and GSH-Px mRNA levels in Northern blot analysis was shown; this suggests that a major degree of regulation for GSH-Px expression by Se is most likely exerted at the posttranscriptional level. These observations may help to explain the increased incidence of atherosclerosis described in Se-deficient individuals
