Aquatic Stage Mosquito Biocontrol: Effects of Entomopathogenic Fungi Blastospores and Conidia on \u3ci\u3eAedes aegypti\u3c/i\u3e Pupae
Fungal entomopathogens present an opportunity to produce mosquito controls on-site, from remote locations to developing communities. Locally produced biopesticides have the potential to empower communities to develop internal disease vector control initiatives to protect local public health. We tested the effectiveness of the conidia solution and blastospore solution of Metarhizium anisopliae E9, Metarhizium anisopliae E1037, Isaria fumosorosea A97, and Isaria fumosorosea 9901 in controlling Aedes aegypti pupae. We observed that entomopathogenic fungi liquid blastospore solution induce mortality in Aedes aegypti pupae at a significantly greater rate than conidia solution and control treatment.
However, further analysis of testing methods used in this study reveal that results may be an inaccurate representation of the fungi’s effect on mosquito pupae
Evidence of active management of private voluntary pension funds in Colombia: a perfomance analysis using proxy ETFS
The purpose of this study is to find evidence that shows that either activemanagement of private pension funds in Colombia actually adds value tothe investors or, on the contrary, investors would achieve better results ifthey invested in passively managed products such as, for example, an ETF(Exchange Trade Fund). After conducting a review of data available from 30different private pension funds in Colombia and 30 ETFs that had similarinvestment goals to these portfolios, our findings reveal that, using commonperformance indicators, a Colombian investor would have a better ROI byinvesting in passively managed products (ETFs) than in portfolios currentlyoffered by voluntary pension funds in Colombia.Portfolio performance, active management, voluntary pension market inColombia
A indexação do conhecimento científico: a necessidade do conhecimento a serviço do desenvolvimento comunitário e da proteção da natureza
The pandemic, the economic crisis, and climate change impose new development models of scientific production, as we suggest in this perspective study. The authors propose “new ways of evaluating academic performance,” which means stopping exclusively rewarding researchers who publish in indexed journals and valuing work with communities and applied interdisciplinary research, aimed at understanding socioenvironmental problems and proposing possible solutions that improve academic performance, improve quality of life of the population, and protect nature.
Experimental Characterization of straight compound-channel turbulent field
Straight compound-channel flows have been studied by many authors, mainly concerned with mean flow variables. Detailed information on the complex turbulent field of these flows is still scarce. In the present paper, high data rate measurements were obtained for the streamwise and vertical velocity components, using a 2D Laser Doppler Velocimeter in a experimental compound flume. The filtered velocities time series allowed the computation of relevant turbulence statistics: autocorrelation functions, dissipation spectra, turbulence scales and dissipation rate. The results are analyzed by comparison with universal laws drawn for isotropic turbulent 2D fully developed open-channel flow. The presence of strong secondary currents does not affect the universal law in the floodplain, as long as the constants are changed. In the main channel the 3D behavior of the flow is more pronounced and the universal laws fail to reproduce accurately the experimental result
The role of traditional restaurants in tourist destination loyalty
The aim of this study is to examine the effect that visitor satisfaction with traditional restaurants has on perceptions of the local gastronomy, the overall image of a city and loyalty to that destination. Fieldwork has been carried out in Córdoba, a city in southern Spain famous for being a UNESCO World Heritage city and for its traditional gastronomy. The methodology used is based on structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). This paper makes a novel contribution in that no previous studies to date have explored satisfaction with traditional restaurants, with respect to the food, the service and the atmosphere. To achieve the proposed objective, a structured questionnaire has been used to find out the opinions of diners in renowned restaurants that base their cuisine on traditional dishes made with quality local ingredients. The results obtained confirm that a satisfactory experience with the food of a traditional restaurant has a positive effect on the image of the destination and the gastronomy of the place, as well as on visitors’ intentions to recommend and repeat the visit to said destination. Based on the analysis carried out, effective strategies are suggested to help manage these types of restaurants. The study provides theoretical and practical implications from a gastronomic perspective, which can enable tourism managers to employ new strategies to retain tourists visiting a city, based on increasing their post-experience satisfaction with restaurants featuring local cuisine
