A Growth Model for the Quadruple Helix Innovation Theory
We propose a theoretical growth model with which to frame analytically the Quadruple Helix Innovation Theory (QHIT). The aim is to emphasise the investment in innovation transmission mechanisms in terms of economic growth and productivity gains, in one-high-technology sector, by stressing the role played by the helices of the Quadruple Helix Innovation Model: Academiaand Technological Infrastructures, Firms of Innovation, Government and Civil Society. In the existing literature, the relationship between the helices and respective impacts on economic growth does not appear clear. Results are fragiledue to data weakness and the inexistence of a theoretical framework to specify the relationship between the helices. Hence our motivation for providing the QHIT with a theoretical growth model. Our intent is to model the importance of emerging, dynamically adaptive, and transdisciplinary knowledge and innovation ecosystems to economic growth. We .nd that higher economic growth rate is obtained as a result of an increase in synergies and complementarities between different productive units, or an incease in productive government expenditure.Economic Growth; Quadruple Helix Innovation Model; Innovation Ecosystems.
A qualitative approach to define the prototype of a portuguese expatriate leader in Angola
This qualitative research analyzes the individual life experiences of Portuguese expatriate leaders who left their home country to work at organizations in Angola, a place that offers better job opportunities. Through interviews with those professionals and their followers, a prototype of a Portuguese expatriate leader in Angola has been developed.
Even though Angola is a former Portuguese colony, it was at war for many years and so the economic situation and culture of the country are distant from what Portuguese workers are used too, which requires them to adapt and be open-minded to change
Marine biofouling in man-made metallic immersed structures is still a global socio-economic problem. The protection of structures has been conventionally performed using antifouling paints containing toxic organic and/or metallic biocides (e.g. copper) towards non-target organisms. In order to circumvent this environmental problem and control the chemicals release over time, some of these biocides have been immobilized/encapsulated in engineered nanomaterials. When directly dispersed in artificial saltwater, novel nanoadditives show a noteworthy reduction in their toxicity and hazard to marine ecosystems. Thus, the present study aimed to test the toxicity and antifouling efficacy of 8 modified coatings with free or nanostructured biocides and 1 state-of-the-art coating and to establish a relationship with physicochemical parameters and the release rate of chemicals over time. The tested systems are the following: two coatings containing only free biocides (CuPT and DCOIT (commercially known as Sea-Nine), two with nano-structured biocides (CuPT @ Zn-Al LDH and Sea-Nine @ SiNC), three with unloaded/"empty" nanostructures (Cu-Al LDH, Zn-Al LDH and SiNC), blank reference without biocides and a commercial reference. The anti-fouling efficacy assessment was done at Gafanha da Encarnação marina (Aveiro, Portugal), for a complete year. Bacteria, microphytobenthos and macrofoulers communities were evaluated periodically.
In the laboratory, coated plates were properly characterized in terms of chemical composition and metallographic properties, and then, placed in aquaria and allowed to release their chemical compounds for 3 months. Water samples were taken from each aquarium and monitored for toxic effects on microalgae (growth inhibition, Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Tetraselmis chuii) and crustaceans (lethality, Artemia salina), elemental composition (ICP-MS and ICP-OES), DCOIT quantification (only in paints with this compound via HPLC) and physicochemical characterization. Overall, this study showed that coatings with free biocides showed high antifouling efficacy, but extreme toxicity. The encapsulation of these biocides significantly reduced the coatings toxicity and kept (CuPT @ Zn-Al LDH) or even increased (Sea-Nine @ SiNC) their anti-macrofouling efficacy over an entire year of immersion in the field, being a promising method with environmental benefits.
Optical microsystem for spectroscopy signals extraction applied to gastrointestinal dysplasia detection
Tese de Doutoramento em Engenharia BiomédicaThe early detection of gastrointestinal cancer, in the dysplastic stage, is essential to
increase the patient survival rate. Spectroscopic techniques, particularly diffuse reflectance and
fluorescence, can improve the gastrointestinal dysplasia detection, since these techniques can be
used to extract biochemical and morphologic information related with the status of a
gastrointestinal tissue.
Several research groups have developed prototypes for the extraction of diffuse reflectance
and fluorescence signals applied to gastrointestinal cancer detection. Despite their advantages
associated with the gastrointestinal cancer identification, they have several disadvantages related
with the use of complex, high-cost and sophisticate components such as xenon lamps, lasers,
monochromators, optical fibers and high quantum efficiency detectors, which may hamper their
wide use as well as their huge clinical value. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to develop a
low-cost, miniaturized and minimal invasive microsystem for spectroscopic signals extraction.
As a result, in this work it is proposed the implementation of a microsystem, which
comprises in a single chip, an optical filter system for selection and extraction of the diffuse
reflectance and fluorescence signals in relevant spectral bands, a silicon photodiodes matrix (4×4)
and its readout electronics, and miniaturized light emitting diodes. The main applications of this
microsystem are: its use as a portable device in a surgery room for inspection of total removing of
the cancerous or dysplastic tissue; and its integration with the standard endoscopes and
colonoscopes using it as an auxiliary, to the physician, in early gastrointestinal cancer detection.
Along this thesis, important steps towards that microsystem implementation were
achieved. In a first step experimental measurements were performed, with phantoms
representative of the main absorbing, scattering and fluorescence properties of gastrointestinal
tissues (containing hemoglobin, polystyrene microspheres to represent collagen fibers, and the
fluorophores NADH and Carbostyril 124, the latter representing collagen), in order to study the
diffuse reflectance and fluorescence typical spectra and their temperature dependence. Moreover,
the viability of using only 16 spectral bands (between 350 and 750 nm) for signals extraction was
discussed, proving the feasibility of an optical filter system implementation in the final microsystem.
Therefore, it were designed, fabricated and characterized 16 MgO/TiO2 and SiO2/TiO2
based thin-film optical filters. Their characterization performed through optical transmittance, selectivity, profilometry and scanning electron microscopy, allowed understanding the deviations
between the simulated characteristics and the ones experimentally obtained. Moreover, the optical
filters results showed transmittances ranging from 50% to 90% approximately, and a full width half
maximum (FWHM) averaging from 11 nm to 20 nm, which fits the required application. The
fabricated optical filters had some deviations considering their simulated characteristics, which can
be explained by the complexity of the optical filters design, for example, the materials refractive
index dependence with wavelength and thin-film thickness.
The diffuse reflectance and fluorescence signals that pass through the optical filters can
be measured with an on-chip silicon photodetectors matrix (4×4), based on n+/p-epilayer junction
photodiodes with an active area of 100 × 100 µm2, and a light-to-frequency converter, per each
photodiode, that enables producing a digital signal with a frequency proportional to the photodiode
current. As a result, the design and implementation of a CMOS microsystem comprising these
components were performed. The photodiodes characterization showed a responsivity of
200 mA/W at 550 nm, approximately, and the light-to-frequency converter connected to the
photodiode showed a linear response (R2>0.99) with a sensitivity of 25 Hz/nA at 550 nm,
approximately. The behavior of the current-to-frequency converter, with an external current source
directly injected in its input, was also studied allowing to confirm its linearity in the range of currents
produced in this application, its power consumption of 1 mW, and its maximum input current,
approximately 300 µA. This CMOS approach avoids the need of an expensive readout optical
microsystem, since it is possible to integrate the photodiodes and the readout electronics in a small
silicon area (275 × 100 µm2 per photodiode and its respective converter).
The performance of the implemented microsystem and the fabricated optical filters was
evaluated, using phantoms (also containing hemoglobin, polystyrene microspheres, NADH and
Carbostyril 124). The obtained results have shown the viability of the microsystem (including the
optical filter system) to extract diffuse reflectance and fluorescence signals. Some issues were
noted on the sensitivity of the implemented optical setups for the on-chip measurements. However,
some solutions were proposed for the remaining problems, specifically the future use of
miniaturized light emitting diodes and the direct deposition of the optical filters on the top of the
photodetection system. Finally, the direct integration of optical filters on top of the photodiodes was
discussed and a new approach was tested. The author, Sara Filomena Ribeiro Pimenta, was supported by the Portuguese Foundation

As principais aplicações deste
a 550 nm, aproximadamente.
Carbostyril 124). Os resultados obtidos provaram a viabilidade do microssistema (incluindo o sistema
No
The influence of nudges and financial literacy on market participation and socially responsible investment
To make sound financial decisions, individuals need to have some knowledge of financial concepts and the expertise to use that knowledge efficiently. However, financial literacy is not enough for individuals to make better financial decisions. This is due to behavioral biases, which can be corrected through the use of nudges.
The main objective of this study is to test whether the use of nudges applied to financial and investment decisions produces effects in guiding individuals towards the best choice. The investigation starts by evaluating the sample's level of financial literacy and verifying whether variables such as perceived financial literacy, financial experience, risk profile and sociodemographic characteristics have any influence on it; continues with the study on market participation, testing whether the same variables plus effective financial literacy have an influence on the number of financial assets that individuals hold; assesses individuals' preferences in relation to information nudges, recommendations and default options; whether these preferences could influence market participation; follows with the testing of various nudges in hypothetical scenarios in SRI; and, ends with the analysis of the importance given by individuals to sustainability issues.
For this, a questionnaire was created as an experiment with a treatment group and a control group, to test if the use of nudges would produce significant differences between the choice of conventional investment funds or SRI. The econometric analysis involved the use of Ordered Probit and Probit regressions.
The universe under analysis is the Portuguese Population, so the questionnaire was distributed via email and social platforms, constructing a sample of 244 respondents of different ages, different levels of education and income levels.
This study contributes to the literature, filling the existing gap regarding the use of nudges in financial markets and sustainable investments.
The results reveled low levels of financial literacy and that indivduals that were male or had higher perceived financial literacy, education or risk profile were more financially literate. The market participation levels were also low and were influenced by gender, study field and financial literacy. There was no outstanding influence on the use of nudges and SRI. However, it was found that individuals attach great importance to receiving information and brief explanations about financial investments and value sustainability issues. Concluding that information nudges can be used to guide investors towards market participation and, consequently, towards SRI
Disorder dynamic in cell: protein unfolding, molecular crowding and their combined action in intracellular aqueous two-phase systems formation
Dissertação de mestrado em Bioquímica Aplicada, ramo BiotecnologiaInside the cell, the heterogeneous distribution of macromolecules can produce regions of
different density, also known as membraneless organelles. These organelles are formed by phase
separation, creating a specific microenvironment for the occurrence of localized biochemistry. The
mechanism by which this phase separation occurs is still controversial, although various
experimental evidences suggest a major role of intermolecular interactions between intrinsically
disordered proteins (IDPs), proteins that display high structural flexibility crucial for this dynamic
association. On the other hand, there is an increased evidence that globular proteins present high
structural flexibility, where not only the native states but also the partially and globally unfolded
states can have biological function. Accordingly, it is proposed that the intermolecular interactions
between partial/globally unfolded states of globular proteins and other proteins could also lead to
phase separation. The analysis of such hypothesis involved the in vitro mimicking of heat stress
condition, a physiological situation that encompasses both the intracellular phase separation and
thermal unfolding. To accomplish this, myoglobin was selected as a model to study the thermal
unfolding and an in vitro model for phase separation was used, based on PEG/Dextran aqueous
two-phase systems (ATPS). In addition, and to closer mimic the protein´s native environment,
namely, the intracellular ions, KCl was added to the model. For comparative purposes, the effect
of additional four different salts in the myoglobin stability (thermal and chemical) was evaluated.
The analysis of the results for each salt suggests a thermal destabilization induced by Debye-Hückel
screening, whereas in the case of chemical denaturation, the effects of salts followed their position
in the Hofmeister series. Structural data from circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence resonance
energy transfer (FRET) analysis indicate a perturbation of the myoglobin structure both in the native
and unfolded state, with the latter being distinct for thermal or chemical unfolding.
The results regarding the proposal pointed out for an earlier phase separation of
PEG/dextran systems above certain concentrations of myoglobin. The main reason for this effect
emerges from the direct interactions between the myoglobin unfolded states and PEG, indicating
that unfolded states of globular proteins can alter the behavior of phase separation, namely, by
decreasing the concentration needed for its occurrence. Moreover, an additional contribution of
the solvent was observed, suggesting that the interplay between the proteins and their surrounding
water must be considered when studying the mechanism of intracellular phase separation.
Collectively, the present results strengthen the proposed hypothesis, opening new
biochemical perspectives for the occurrence of such phenomenon inside the cells.
A formação destes
A analise desta hipótese
The present work was performed in the Department of Chemistry, University of Minho, Braga,

Some temporal conjunctions can express a variety of meanings on a causal-temporal dimension. By inference, a when-clause may indicate a cause, an event prior in time, or even an event occurring simultaneously with the main clause event (Bever & Townsend, 1970). Using a self-paced reading experiment in the program Psyscope, we crossed the independent variables connective (when) and position (first position – Subordinate-Main – and second position – Main-Subordinate) to test if readers focus more on the main clause than on the subordinate clause and if readers use the order-of-mention strategy to interpret two-clause sentences conjoined with when establishing a causal-temporal relationship. Our results showed a significant effect of both structure and position factors. The online results showed that, in general, the main clause receives more reading times than the subordinate clause and that readers spent more time reading the main-subordinate sentences. The offline results indicate that the information about the first event is easier to recall if the when-clause is the first clause. Thus, the subordinate-main condition presented more accuracy rates. The order of mention strategy did not seem to be used during sentence reading processing, however, the accuracy rates were higher in conditions, in which the linguistic order mirrored the occurrence order. The main-subordinate order affected the ease of late comprehension, although it eased the reading processing.
