    Get PDF
As early as 1939, Aimé Césaire took on the role of spokesperson for those who had been reduced to silence as a result of colonial or racial oppression. Faced with the long tradition of voicelessness of slaves and their descendants, the contemporary world must open up public space not only to the history but also to the memory of slavery and of the slave trade. People of African descent not only narrate their memories but also perform them in order to recall their enslaved ancestors. Listening to their memories means reconstructing social ties in order that they may feel that they are, as Henry Louis Gates puts it, truly “citizens of a multicultural, cosmopolitan, secular world.

Effect of drill speed on the strain distribution during drilling of bovine and human bones

    Get PDF
Drilling is an operation commonly required in orthopaedic surgery for insertion of screws and internal fixation of bone fractures. Induced damage is one of the undesired effects of drilling mainly due to the use of inadequate drilling parameters. During the recent years, scientists have been trying to describe the relationship between drilling parameters and bone injury. However, no studies have examined the level of strain generated in the bone during the drilling process. This paper focuses on the analysis of different drill speeds during drilling of fresh bovine femora and human cadaveric tibiae. The main contribution of this work is to determine how differences in applied drill speeds affect the strain of cortical tissue near the drilling site and the drill bit temperature. This research was supported by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology under the research project UID/EMS/50022/2013.

Conceptual Profiles: Theoretical-methodological Grounds and Empirical Studies

    Get PDF
AbstractIn this paper, we briefly address the theoretical and methodological grounds of the conceptual profile theory and discuss two empirical studies aiming at constructing conceptual profile models and using them to analyze classroom discourse in different sciences, chemistry (entropy and spontaneity) and biology (adaptation). The basic idea is to illustrate how these models were built, considering differences and similarities between the methods used for this purpose. Conceptual profiles are models of different modes of seeing and conceptualizing the world used by individuals to signify their experience. They are built for a given concept and are constituted by several zones, each representing a particular mode of thinking about that concept, related to a particular way of speaking. Each zone is individuated by ontological, epistemological, and axiological commitments underlying discourse. We will show how different concepts, situated in sciences with different levels of conceptual polysemy, demand different methodologies to deal with the variation found in meaning making in the sociocultural, ontogenetic, and microgenetic domains

Functionalized Boron Nitride Applications in Biotechnology

    Get PDF
Due to its interesting chemical, physical, and biological properties, boron nitride has received considerable attention by the scientific and technological communities. However, there is a strong dependency of its structural quality and compatibility in different host systems, regarding its potential applications. The use of these different nanostructures involves several challenges due to their low dispersibility in water and organic solvents; thus, its chemical modification is an important step that gives them specificity. Therefore, the ability to control their surface (physically or chemically) is essential for exploring and building blocks in the nanoengineering of supramolecular structures. In this chapter, we report different boron nitride functionalization processes, as well as their important uses as adjuvants in vaccines, brachytherapy, or drug delivery. Besides some important theoretical studies that have demonstrated the different functionalization possibilities for use in nanomedicine, are also reported

This study evaluated the effectiveness of theoretical and practical teaching method in diabetes and doctors' position about feasibility of intensive blood glucose control. Forty-eight internal medicine or endocrinology residents participated in a two-day diabetes immersion course. The participants received training on self-blood glucose monitoring, techniques of insulin administration and carbohydrate counting. They were also instructed to behave as patients with diabetes and to follow individual medical prescription. They were assessed through questionnaires. In knowledge assessment, a significant increase of 12% was observed between the beginning and the end of the course (61.2% and 73.2%, respectively, with p < 0.0001). Before the course, 70.8% and 89.6% of the participants believed there were complications in performing carbohydrate counting and blood glucose monitoring, respectively. After the experience, 82.9% of them had difficulties in carbohydrate counting and 80.8% in self-monitoring; 40.4% took all medications prescribed and 36.1% monitored blood glucose correctly. These results show that the methodology of this course is an effective way to disseminate knowledge and that it contributes to doctors becoming more sensitive to daily problems faced by patients with diabetes melito concerning the acceptance of medical recommendations
