The needle core biopsy is a technique applied to remove small cylinders of breast tissue. The development of accurate radiological techniques for location of breast lesions has spread the use of core biopsy as the first histological approach to non-palpable lesions. The differential diagnosis of mucinous carcinoma and benign mucinous lesions by core biopsy may be challenging, mainly when the lesion shows mucin extravasation. The accuracy of diagnosis in these cases is extremely important to determine the type of procedure to be performed, as well as the treatment choice. This study shows a review and an update of the literature as to invasive mucinous carcinoma of the breast and its differential diagnosis, with emphasis on the challenges of diagnosis by core biopsy. Among the differential diagnoses are fibrocystic changes with luminal mucin, mucinous papillary lesions, mucocele-like lesions that range from benign to those associated with atypical ductal hyperplasia and ductal carcinoma in situ. Mucinous changes may also be found in a variety of lesions such as fibroadenoma, phyllodes tumor, pleomorphic adenoma and nodular mucinosis. In conclusion, core biopsy is a reliable technique for the diagnosis of mucinous carcinoma of the breast and its differential diagnosis, however, in doubtful cases or when the sample is scarce, it is advisable to perform an excisional biopsy to clarify the diagnosis

The objective of this work was to perform the stratification of maize cropping environments in Paraná, Minas Gerais, and Bahia States, Brazil, using different methods, and to determine association and divergence levels between the stratification methods. Four methods were evaluated: the Lin’s traditional one; the one of environmental dissimilarity; the genotype x environment (GxE) interaction decomposition in simple and complex parts; and the factor analysis. These methods were applied to 48 maize experimental hybrids, evaluated in 11 cropping environments in the three Brazilian states, divided into two sets of experiments. Besides the hybrids, six commercial cultivars, common to both sets, were used as controls. Genotype x environment interaction was predominantly complex. The decomposition of GxE interaction in simple and complex parts and the stratification by factor analysis were strongly associated to each other, and moderately associated to the other methods. Furthermore, these methods are more rigorous in the stratification process, weighting more efficiently the magnitude of the GxE interaction

Abstract\ud \ud \ud \ud Background\ud \ud The main focus of several studies concerned with cancer progression and metastasis is to analyze the mechanisms that allow cancer cells to interact and quickly adapt with their environment. Integrins, a family of transmembrane glycoproteins, play a major role in invasive and metastatic processes. Integrins are involved in cell adhesion in both cell-extracellular matrix and cell-cell interactions, and particularly, β1 integrin is involved in proliferation and differentiation of cells in the development of epithelial tissues. This work aimed to investigate the putative role of β1 integrin expression on survival and metastasis in patients with breast invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). In addition, we compared the expression of β1 integrin in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods\ud \ud Through tissue microarray (TMA) slides containing 225 samples of IDC and 67 samples of DCIS, β1 integrin expression was related with several immunohistochemical markers and clinicopathologic features of prognostic significance.\ud \ud \ud \ud Results\ud \ud β1 integrin was overexpressed in 32.8% of IDC. In IDC, β1 integrin was related with HER-2 (p = 0.019) and VEGF (p = 0.011) expression and it had a significant relationship with metastasis and death (p = 0.001 and p = 0.05, respectively). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the overexpression of this protein is very significant (p = 0.002) in specific survival (number of months between diagnosis and death caused by the disease). There were no correlation between IDC and DCIS (p = 0.559) regarding β1 integrin expression.\ud \ud \ud \ud Conclusions\ud \ud Considering that the expression of β1 integrin in breast cancer remains controversial, specially its relation with survival of patients, our findings provide further evidence that β1 integrin can be a marker of poor prognosis in breast cancer.\ud \ud \ud \ud Virtual slides\ud \ud The virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: \ud http://www.diagnosticpathology.diagnomx.eu/vs/6652215267393871We thank CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, Brazil) and FAPESP (Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo, Brazil) for financial support, CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, Brazil) and FACEPE (Fundação de Amparo à Ciência e Tecnologia do Estado de Pernambuco, Brazil) for schollarships and financial support; and Deisy Mara da Silva for technical assistance. This research is in accordance with Declaration of Helsinki, and was aprooved by the local ethics comitee

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of extruded soybean and organic selenium supplementation on fatty acid profile and oxidative stability of Holstein milk. Twenty-four Holstein cows were distributed in three blocks and were allocated in three treatments: control diet; diet with 21% extruded soybean; and diet with 21% of extruded soybean + 5 mg of organic selenium. The experiment lasted six weeks. The cows fed with extruded soybean diet produced milk with lower concentration of short and medium chain fatty acids and higher concentration of long chain fatty acids, lower concentration of saturated fatty acids and higher concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid content. The organic selenium supplementation increased milk selenium concentration and delayed milk oxidation. Diet with 21% extruded soybean modified fatty acid profile and resulted in milk susceptible to oxidation. Organic selenium supplementation reduced oxidation and influenced positively the stability of milk

Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050. This means that unless we take immediate action, we will not be able to establish their current status, much less monitor how it is changing and what is being lostinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
