This paper investigates the potential for consumer-facing innovations to contribute emission reductions for limiting warming to 1.5 °C. First, we show that global integrated assessment models which characterise transformation pathways consistent with 1.5 °C mitigation are limited in their ability to analyse the emergence of novelty in energy end-use. Second, we introduce concepts of disruptive innovation which can be usefully applied to the challenge of 1.5 °C mitigation. Disruptive low-carbon innovations offer novel value propositions to consumers and can transform markets for energy-related goods and services while reducing emissions. Third, we identify 99 potentially disruptive low-carbon innovations relating to mobility, food, buildings and cities, and energy supply and distribution. Examples at the fringes of current markets include car clubs, mobility-as-a-service, prefabricated high-efficiency retrofits, internet of things, and urban farming. Each of these offers an alternative to mainstream consumer practices. Fourth, we assess the potential emission reductions from subsets of these disruptive low-carbon innovations using two methods: a survey eliciting experts’ perceptions and a quantitative scaling-up of evidence from early-adopting niches to matched segments of the UK population. We conclude that disruptive low-carbon innovations which appeal to consumers can help efforts to limit warming to 1.5 °C

Accounting for taste? Analysing diverging public support for energy sources in Great Britain

Public acceptance of energy technologies is an important area of energy and social science research. However, few studies utilise large datasets which include spatial and temporal dimensions, as well as the demographic and attitudinal characteristics of survey respondents. In this paper, we analyse twenty-five waves of the UK Government's Energy and Climate Change Public Attitudes Tracker: a large, nationally representative dataset spanning six years (2012 - 2018). This enables unique insights into trends in public acceptance across time, space and social groups, covering eight energy sources. We find differing profiles in terms of who supports which types of energy, with a key division between support for renewable technologies on the one hand, and nuclear and fracking on the other. We also identify a growing gap between public and policymakers’ attitudes to energy technologies which we argue must be bridged to ensure a smooth rapid transition that is acceptable to all

Objectives. Aiming to contribute to the study of mechanisms involved in the anticariogenic properties of dental materials, this study assessed the suitability of a short-term in situ model to evaluate the anticariogenic potential of ionomeric materials. Methods. The study used a 3-phase crossover, double blind design, and in each phase eight volunteers wore palatal appliances containing four enamel blocks restored with one of the following materials: composite resin (CR-Z250) (negative control), a conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC-Ketac-Fil) or a resin-modified GIC (RM-GIC-Vitremer). The restored blocks were covered with a 'test plaque' of S. mutans, placed in palatal. appliances and a cariogenic challenge was made during 1 min with 20% sucrose solution. After 45 min, test plaque was collected for fluoride (F) analysis. Enamel surface microhardness was previously determined at one side of the restoration and the percentage of surface microhardness change (%SMC) in retation to baseline (other side) was calculated. F concentration in enamel was also evaluated. Results. Split-plot ANOVA showed a statistically tower %SMC on enamel around the ionomeric materials than around the CR (p<0.05). This result was supported by a statistically higher F concentration in test plaque (P<0.001) and in enamel (P<0.001) restored with the ionomeric materials when compared to the CR. Conclusions. The results suggest that the short-term in situ model tested is useful for studying the anticariogenic potential of dental materials that release fluoride. Torna-se, portanto, necessário trabalhar de forma preventiva a anemia, bem como alertar os profissionais da área de saúde quanto ao diagnóstico precoce, profilaxia e tratamento.<br>This cross sectional study included children aged 12 to 60 months attended by the public health service in the city of Viçosa, state of Minas Gerais. The objective was to evaluate the prevalences of anemia and serious anemia, the hemoglobin levels and the relation between nutritional status and iron deficiency anemia in these children. For the diagnosis of anemia, (Hemocue) was used, and the cutoff point of 11.0 g/dL proposed by the World Health Organization for anemia, and was adopted serious anemia, was adopted 9,5g/dL. A total of 171 children was evaluated; 62.2% were anemic and 43.5% of these were seriously anemic. Analyzing the nutritional status, a high percentage of under nourished children was found, according to the indexes weight/age, weight/height and height/age (11.7%, 7.0% and 5.8%, respectively). A high prevalence of anemia was observed among the earlier groups. No association was verified between anemia and nutritional status. Therefore, it is necessary to work towards anemia prevention and to alert the health professionals to an early diagnosis, prophylaxis and treatment
