Optical and X-ray Spectroscopy of 1E 0449.4-1823: Demise of the original type 2 QSO
New optical spectra of the original narrow-line quasar 1E 0449.4-1823 show
that it now has broad emission lines of considerable strength, eliminating it
as a "type 2 QSO" candidate. We suggest that the behavior of 1E 0449.4-1823 is
the same as that of some Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies, in which Goodrich
attributed long-term variations of their broad Balmer lines to dynamical
motions of obscuring material located in or around the broad-line region. The
optical continuum and broad emission-line regions of 1E 0449.4-1823 may still
be partly covered in our line of sight, which would explain its large
forbidden-line equivalent widths and flat alpha_ox relative to other
low-redshift QSOs. Also present are apparent absorption features in the broad
Balmer lines and in Mg II, which may be related to the past obscuration and
current emergence of the broad-line region. However, it is difficult to
distinguish absorption from broad emission-line peaks that are displaced in
velocity; we consider the latter a plausible competing interpretation of these
peculiar line profiles. An ASCA X-ray spectrum of 1E 0449.4-1823 can be fitted
with a power-law of Gamma = 1.63, intrinsic N_H < 9 x 10^20 cm-2, and no Fe
Kalpha line emission. Its 2-10 keV luminosity is 6.7 x 10^44 ergs/s. With
regard to the still hypothetical type 2 QSOs, we argue that there is little

Effects of cover crops on phosphatase activity in a clay arable soil in the UK
The effect of five cover crop species (radish, buckwheat, vetch, phacelia and oat) alongside an un-cropped control, on the activity and persistence of soil acid and alkaline phosphatase activity was investigated. There was no effect on alkaline phosphatase activity at the time of cover crop incorporation (March), but by the point of maturation of the following oat cash crop (June) significant differences were detected, with the greatest activity following an oat cover crop. Acid phosphatase activity showed species-related significant differences at both sampling dates, with the magnitude increasing by June. Again, plots following an oat cover crop showed the greatest activity, followed by phacelia. This has shown that soil phosphatase enzymes are affected by the presence of a cover crop, that this effect is apparently species-dependent â and not dependent on the amount of biomass from the cover crop â and that cover crops could be a potential means to enhance soil phosphorus cycling

Influence of ruminal methane on digesta retention and digestive physiology in non-lactating dairy cattle
Enteric methane (CH4) production is a side-effect of herbivore digestion, but it is unknown whether CH4 itself influences digestive physiology.
We investigated the effect of adding CH4 to, or reducing it in, the reticulorumen (RR) in a 4 Ă 4 Latin square experiment with rumen-fistulated,
non-lactating cows, with four treatments: (i) control, (ii) insufflation of CH4 (iCH4), (iii) N via rumen fistula, (iv) reduction of CH4 via
administration of bromochloromethane (BCM). DM intake (DMI), apparent total tract digestibility, digesta mean retention times (MRT), rumen
motility and chewing activity, spot breath CH4 emission (CH4exhal, litre/kg DMI) as well as CH4 dissolved in rumen fluid (CH4RRf, ÎŒg/ml)
were measured. Data were analysed using mixed models, including treatment (or, alternatively, CH4exhal or CH4RRf) and DMI relative to
body mass0·85 (rDMI) as covariates. rDMI was the lowest on the BCM treatment. CH4exhal was highest for iCH4 and lowest for BCM
treatments, whereas only BCM affected (reduced) CH4RRf. After adjusting for rDMI, CH4RRf had a negative association with MRT in the
gastrointestinal tract but not in the RR, and negative associations with fibre digestibility and measures of rumination activity. Adjusting for
rDMI, CH4exhal had additionally a negative association with particle MRT in the RR and a positive association with rumen motility. Thus,
higher rumen levels of CH4 (CH4exhal or CH4RRf) were associated with shorter MRT and increased motility. These findings are tentatively
interpreted as a feedback mechanism in the ruminant digestive tract that aims at mitigating CH4 losses by shortening MRT at higher CH4
The X-ray spectra and spectral variability of intermediate type Seyfert galaxies: ASCA observations of NGC 4388 and ESO 103-G35
The X-ray spectra of two intermediate type Seyfert galaxies are investigated
using ASCA observations separated by more than a year. Both NGC 4388 and ESO
103-G35 exhibit strong, narrow Fe K alpha line emission and absorption by cold
neutral gas with a column density ~ 10^23 cm^-2, characteristic of the X-ray
spectra of type 2 Seyfert galaxies. The power law continuum flux has changed by
a factor of 2 over a time-scale of ~ 2 years for both objects, declining in the
case of NGC 4388 and rising in ESO 103-G35. No variation was observed in the
equivalent width of the Fe K alpha line in the spectra of NGC 4388, implying
that the line flux declined with the continuum. We find that the strength of
the line cannot be accounted for by fluorescence in line-of-sight material with
the measured column density unless a `leaky-absorber' model of the type favored
for IRAS 04575-7537 is employed. The equivalent width of the Fe K alpha
emission line is seen to decrease between the observations of ESO 103-G35 while
the continuum flux increased. The 1996 observation of ESO 103-G35 can also be
fitted with an absorption edge at 7.4 0.2 keV due to partially ionized
iron, and when an ionized absorber model is fitted to the data it is found that
the equivalent column of neutral hydrogen rises to 3.5 x 10^23 cm^-2. The Fe K
alpha line flux can be accounted by fluorescence in this material alone and
this model is also a good representation of the 1988 and 1991 Ginga
observations. There is then no requirement for a reflection component in the
ASCA spectra of ESO 103-G35 or NGC 4388.Comment: 45 pages, 5 tables, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in the

Mechanisms and consequences of partial migration in insects
Partial migration, where a proportion of a population migrates, while other individuals remain resident, is widespread across most migratory lineages. However, the mechanisms driving individual differences in migratory tendency are still relatively poorly understood in most taxa, but may be influenced by morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits, controlled by phenotypic plasticity and the underlying genetic complex. Insects differ from vertebrates in that partial migration is often associated with pronounced morphological differences between migratory and resident phenotypes, such as wing presence or length. In contrast, the mechanisms influencing migratory tendency in wing-monomorphic insects is less clear. Insects are the most abundant and diverse group of terrestrial migrants, with trillions of animals moving across the globe annually, and understanding the drivers and extent of partial migration across populations will have considerable implications for ecosystem services, such as the management of pests and the conservation of threatened or beneficial species. Here, we present an overview of our current but incomplete knowledge of partial migration in insects. We discuss the factors that lead to the maintenance of partial migration within populations, and the conditions that may influence individual decision making, particularly in the context of individual fitness and reproductive tradeoffs. Finally, we highlight current gaps in knowledge and areas of future research that should prove fruitful in understanding the ecological and evolutionary drivers, and consequences of partial migration in insects

WFPC2 Observations of Compact Star Cluster Nuclei in Low Luminosity Spiral Galaxies
We have used the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space
Telescope to image the compact star cluster nuclei of the nearby, late-type,
low-luminosity spiral galaxies NGC 4395, NGC 4242, and ESO 359-029. We also
analyze archival WFPC2 observations of the compact star cluster nucleus of M33.
A comparative analysis of the structural and photometric properties of these
four nuclei is presented. All of the nuclei are very compact, with luminosity
densities increasing at small radii to the resolution limit of our data. NGC
4395 contains a Seyfert 1 nucleus with a distinct bipolar structure and bright
associated filaments which are likely due to [OIII] emission. The M33 nucleus
has a complex structure, with elongated isophotes and possible signatures of
weak activity, including a jet-like component. The other two nuclei are not
known to be active, but share similar physical size scales and luminosities to
the M33 and NGC 4395 nuclei. The circumnuclear environments of all four of our
program galaxies are extremely diffuse, have only low-to-moderate star
formation, and appear to be devoid of large quantities of dust. The central
gravitational potentials of the galaxies are also quite shallow, making the

Adaptive strategies of high-flying migratory hoverflies in response to wind currents
Large migrating insects, flying at high altitude, often exhibit complex behaviour. They frequently elect to fly on winds with directions quite different from the prevailing direction, and they show a degree of common orientation, both of which facilitate transport in seasonally beneficial directions. Much less is known about the migration behaviour of smaller (10â70 mg) insects. To address this issue, we used radar to examine the high-altitude flight of hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae), a group of day-active, medium-sized insects commonly migrating over the UK. We found that autumn migrants, which must move south, did indeed show migration timings and orientation responses that would take them in this direction, despite the unfavourability of the prevailing winds. Evidently, these hoverfly migrants must have a compass (probably a time-compensated solar mechanism), and a means of sensing the wind direction (which may be determined with sufficient accuracy at ground level, before take-off). By contrast, hoverflies arriving in the UK in spring showed weaker orientation tendencies, and did not correct for wind drift away from their seasonally adaptive direction (northwards). However, the spring migrants necessarily come from the south (on warm southerly winds), so we surmise that complex orientation behaviour may not be so crucial for the spring movements
The distribution of radioactive 44Ti in Cassiopeia A
The distribution of elements produced in the innermost layers of a supernova explosion is a key diagnostic for studying the collapse of massive stars. Here we present the results of a 2.4 Ms NuSTAR observing campaign aimed at studying the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A). We perform spatially resolved spectroscopic analyses of the 44Ti ejecta, which we use to determine the Doppler shift and thus the three-dimensional (3D) velocities of the 44Ti ejecta. We find an initial 44Ti mass of (1.54 ± 0.21) Ă 10â4 Mâ, which has a present-day average momentum direction of 340° ± 15° projected onto the plane of the sky (measured clockwise from celestial north) and is tilted by 58° ± 20° into the plane of the sky away from the observer, roughly opposite to the inferred direction of motion of the central compact object. We find some 44Ti ejecta that are clearly interior to the reverse shock and some that are clearly exterior to it. Where we observe 44Ti ejecta exterior to the reverse shock we also see shock-heated iron; however, there are regions where we see iron but do not observe 44Ti. This suggests that the local conditions of the supernova shock during explosive nucleosynthesis varied enough to suppress the production of 44Ti by at least a factor of two in some regions, even in regions that are assumed to be the result of processes like α-rich freezeout that should produce both iron and titanium
Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts
