    Effects of smoking on vital capacity in healthy students

    INTRODUCTION: Although the tobacco consumption has been reported to obstruct the effects of physical culture in young adults, there are few reports that include physical and laboratory evidence of this. Health education appears not to prevent impairment of the vital capacity associated with tobacco consumption. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was estimate the effect of tobacco consumption on vital capacity after four months of participation in a theoretical-practical program on movement fundamentals.METHODS: Preexperimental design of two measurements. Lung function and a physical test were performed on seventeen healthy students. Course-Navette test was carried out to estimate vital capacity (heart rate at rest, maximum heart rate, physical level, VO2 max, distance and average speed). Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) was measured by Welch Allyn Schiller spirometer. The sample was divided on the consumption of cigarettes (12 consumers vs. 5 abstainers). T-tests were used to evaluate the differences between groups. RESULTS: Participants were men of 20.94 years (SD = 2.69, 18-19 years) with normal body complexion (Body mass index = 24.51 kg/m 2 (SD = 1.69). There were no baseline differences between groups regarding age or body composition (p \u3e .05). Differences in all parameters related to vital capacity were observed in the abstainers group (p \u3c .01), except for maximal heart rate and resting heart rate (p \u3e .05). The smokers group decreased their results in both tests but without significant differences. CONCLUSION: Tobacco consumption affected the vital capacity of young adults despite the participation in theoretical-practical program of fundamentals of the movement. Tobacco abstinence coupled with participation in an educational program increased vital capacity measured with a physical and a laboratory test

    In vitro dissolution characteristics of patent, generic and similar brands of naproxen in various dissolution media

    Purpose: To investigate the dissolution properties of various brands of naproxen in four dissolution media in order to forecast their biological availability. Methods: Dissolution tests were carried out in a dissolution tester with 48 tablets of different naproxen brands in 900 mL of 0.1 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.4. Subsequently, the medium was modified with 600 mL of buffer plus 300 mL of cola drink, grapefruit or milk. Each sample was taken and brought to a concentration approximating that of a reference solution. Absorbance at 332 nm was determined and the dissolution, Q, was calculated (Q values ≥ 80.0 ± 5 % were acceptable). Results: Dissolution in buffer was > 85 %. In cola drink, it was < 80 %, while in grapefruit juice, it was in the range of 7 - 68 %. Using 2-way ANOVA, these media and the three naproxen brands showed significant differences (F = 68.90, p = 0.0000; F = 23.18, p = 0.0000). With Fisher's LSD test, two of these media contributed consistently to dissolution, and the three drug brands showed statistically different dissolution profiles (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: Caution must be exercised cola drink, grapefruit juice and milk are used to administered naproxen as the biological availability of the drug may be altered

    Chaotic motion of space charge wavefronts in semiconductors under time-independent voltage bias

    A standard drift-diffusion model of space charge wave propagation in semiconductors has been studied numerically and analytically under dc voltage bias. For sufficiently long samples, appropriate contact resistivity and applied voltage - such that the sample is biased in a regime of negative differential resistance - we find chaos in the propagation of nonlinear fronts (charge monopoles of alternating sign) of electric field. The chaos is always low-dimensional, but has a complex spatial structure; this behavior can be interpreted using a finite dimensional asymptotic model in which the front (charge monopole) positions and the electrical current are the only dynamical variables.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
