Singling out the effect of quenched disorder in the phase diagram of cuprates
We investigate the specific influence of structural disorder on the
suppression of antiferromagnetic order and on the emergence of cuprate
superconductivity. We single out pure disorder, by focusing on a series of
YEuBaCuO samples at fixed oxygen content
, in the range . The gradual Y/Eu isovalent substitution
smoothly drives the system through the Mott-insulator to superconductor
transition from a full antiferromagnet with N\'eel transition K at
to a bulk superconductor with superconducting critical temperature
K at , YBaCuO. The electronic properties are
finely tuned by gradual lattice deformations induced by the different cationic
radii of the two lanthanides, inducing a continuous change of the basal Cu(1)-O
chain length, as well as a controlled amount of disorder in the active
Cu(2)O bilayers. We check that internal charge transfer from the basal to
the active plane is entirely responsible for the doping of the latter and we
show that superconductivity emerges with orthorhombicity. By comparing
transition temperatures with those of the isoelectronic clean system we
deterime the influence of pure structural disorder connected with the Y/Eu

A design methodology for an innovative racing mini motorcycle frame
Sports equipment design is a young and evolving engineering discipline focused on the best simultaneous optimization of user and product as a system. In motorsports, in particular, the final performance during a race depends on many parameters related to the vehicle, circuit, weather, and tyres and the personal feelings of every single driver. Top teams in high-tech categories can invest huge amounts of money in developing simulators, but such economic commitment is not sustainable for all those teams that operate in minor but very popular categories, such as karts or mini-motorcycles. In these fields, the most common design approach is trial and error on physical prototypes. Such an approach leads to high costs, long optimization times, poor innovation, and inefficient management of the design knowledge. The present paper proposes a driver centred methodology for the design of an innovative mini racing motorcycle frame. It consists of two main phases: the drivers’ feelings translation into engineering requirements and constraints, and the exploration of the design solution space. Expected effects of the application of the proposed methodology are an overall increase in the degree of innovation, time compression, and cost reduction during the development process, with a significant impact on the competitiveness of small racing teams in minor categories
Catalogue of extreme wave events in Ireland: revised and updated for 14680 BP - 2017
This paper aims to extend and update the survey of extreme wave events in Ireland that was previously carried out by O’Brien et al. (2013). The original catalogue highlighted the frequency of such events dating back as far as the turn of the last ice age through to 2012. Ireland’s marine territory extends far beyond its coastline and is one of the largest seabed
territories in Europe. It is therefore not surprising that extreme waves have continued to occur regularly since 2012, particularly
considering the severity of weather during the winters of 2013-14 and 2015-16. In addition, a large number of storm surges
have been identified since the publication of the original catalogue. This paper updates the O’Brien et al. (2013) catalogue to include events up to the end of 2016. Storm surges are included as a new category and events are categorised into long waves (tsunamis and storm surges) and short waves (storm and rogue waves). New results prior to 2012 are also included and some of the events previously documented are reclassified. Important questions regarding public safety, services and the influence of climate change are also highlighted
Electron localization and possible phase separation in the absence of a charge density wave in single-phase 1T-VS
We report on a systematic study of the structural, magnetic and transport
properties of high-purity 1T-VS powder samples prepared under high
pressure. The results differ notably from those previously obtained by
de-intercalating Li from LiVS. First, no Charge Density Wave (CDW) is found
by transmission electron microscopy down to 94 K. Though, \textit{ab initio}
phonon calculations unveil a latent CDW instability driven by an acoustic
phonon softening at the wave vector (0.21,0.21,0)
previously reported in de-intercalated samples. A further indication of latent
lattice instability is given by an anomalous expansion of the V-S bond distance
at low temperature. Second, infrared optical absorption and electrical
resistivity measurements give evidence of non metallic properties, consistent
with the observation of no CDW phase. On the other hand, magnetic
susceptibility and NMR data suggest the coexistence of localized moments with
metallic carriers, in agreement with \textit{ab initio} band structure
calculations. This discrepancy is reconciled by a picture of electron
localization induced by disorder or electronic correlations leading to a phase
separation of metallic and non-metallic domains in the nm scale. We conclude
that 1T-VS is at the verge of a CDW transition and suggest that residual
electronic doping in Li de-intercalated samples stabilizes a uniform CDW phase

Expectations and outcomes when moving from open to laparoscopic adrenalectomy: Multivariate analysis
Various authors have suggested that laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) leads to better surgical outcomes than open surgery. The debate is still open, however, and indications and limitations of minimally invasive surgery have not been completely established. The objective of our study was to compare surgical outcomes of LA and open adrenalectomy (OA), using multivariate analysis to adjust for potential confounding factors (e.g., size of the lesion, histology). Between 1995 and June 2000 at "Careggi" Hospital in Florence, Italy patients with an indication for adrenalectomy were treated laparoscopically if the lesion was 2 hours, blood loss greater than or equal to 500 ml) between patients operated on through a traditional approach and those who underwent LA. On the other hand, patients operated on laparoscopically have a significantly higher probability than the OA group of experiencing a better recovery from surgery (i.e., require less postoperative analgesics and return to normal activities earlier). The results of the present study show that, although LA does not add much benefit in terms of expected intraoperative outcomes, it dramatically speeds patients' recovery from surgery. The two approaches are complementary and should both be integrated into the technical background of all endocrine surgeons
Magnetic ground state and spin fluctuations in MnGe chiral magnet as studied by Muon Spin Rotation
We have studied by muon spin resonance ({\mu}SR) the helical ground state and
fluctuating chiral phase recently observed in the MnGe chiral magnet. At low
temperature, the muon polarization shows double period oscillations at short
time scales. Their analysis, akin to that recently developed for MnSi [A. Amato
et al., Phys. Rev. B 89, 184425 (2014)], provides an estimation of the field
distribution induced by the Mn helical order at the muon site. The refined muon
position agrees nicely with ab initio calculations. With increasing
temperature, an inhomogeneous fluctuating chiral phase sets in, characterized
by two well separated frequency ranges which coexist in the sample. Rapid and
slow fluctuations, respectively associated with short range and long range
ordered helices, coexist in a large temperature range below T = 170 K. We
discuss the results with respect to MnSi, taking the short helical period,
metastable quenched state and peculiar band structure of MnGe into account.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figure
Titanium-Based Tetrakis-2,3-[5,6-di(Substituted)pyrazino]porphyrazine: Synthesis and Characterization
Tetrapyrazinoporphyrazine (TPysPz) ligands and metal complexes find, generally, application as electronic materials and catalysts. Considering the limited application of Titanium (Ti), we prepared and characterized a family of ligands and Ti-based complexes of tetrakis-2,3-[5,6-di-R8-pyrazino]porphyrazine (R = H, 2-Py, Ph). UV/Vis measurements in different solvents confirm molecular aggregation, which results more pronounced in the presence of 2-pyridil and phenyl substituents on the macrocycle edge. Because of low solubility, solid state NMR was applied for structure characterization. Additional IR and MALDI-TOF were carried out to complete the characterization. Cyclic voltammetry in DMSO/Bu4NBF4 0.1 m unveiled that our Ti complexes can take part in up to five redox events. The first two quasi-reversible reductions involve Ti(IV), whereas the further to or three occur at the expense of the TPysPz macrocycle. To test the applicability of our compounds as catalytic materials, we performed a preliminary cyclic voltammetry investigation in the solid-state, which showed typical peaks of hydrogen redox reactions
