The formaldehyde used as anti-contaminant agent in artificial diets of insects can cause serious risks to human health. However, there are products with the same purpose, but with less toxicity to humans. In this sense, the aim of this study was to evaluate the biological parameters of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) fed on an artificial diet containing different anti-infective agents to replace the formaldehyde, as well as analyze the effects on its parasitoid Cotesia flavipes (Cameron, 1891) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The experiment was conducted under a completely randomized design, studying the anti-contaminant agents: sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, 2-phenylphenol, and formaldehyde (standard diet), with deionized water as control. The larvae of sugarcane borer were fed on diets with the cited agents, and were daily observed for: larval and pupal periods, larval and pupal viabilities, number of unviable larvae, longevity, pupae weight, sex ratio and the adults fecundity. To analyze the effects of the anti-contaminant agents on the C. flavipes parasitoid, 50 larvae of sugarcane borer were parasitized and daily observed until the parasitoid pupae formation, being evaluated: number of adults emerged per pupal mass, longevity and sex ratio. D. saccharalis larvae are positively influenced by replacing formaldehyde to 2-phenylphenol in their diet, not causing significant deleterious effects to C. flavipes. The formaldehyde used as anti-contaminant agent in artificial diets of insects can cause serious risks to human health. The objective of this work was to evaluate the electrophoretic patterns of heat‑tolerant proteins and the activity of the endo‑β‑mannanase enzyme during lettuce seed germination, at high temperature. Seeds of eight lettuce cultivars were subjected to germination, first count, and emergence tests at two temperatures, 20 and 35°C. The index of germination speed (IVG) and the emergence rate index (IVE) were calculated. The expression of heat‑tolerant proteins and of the endo‑β‑mannanase enzyme was also evaluated for all treatments. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2x8 factorial arrangement, with two temperatures and eight cultivars. The highest germination is observed at 35°C in the Everglades cultivar, considered thermotolerant. The patterns of heat‑tolerant proteins in lettuce seeds present specific bands in the Everglades cultivar, at 35ºC. The activity of the endo‑β‑mannanase enzyme is higher in the Everglades cultivar, at this temperature. This cultivar has potential for use in lettuce breeding programs aiming for tolerance to high temperatures during germination

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) were initially designed to extend the coverage and accuracy of navigation systems, but given the possible applications, it is possible to analyze the different terrestrial phenomena from a specific methodology. how to estimate the speed and direction of the plate tectonics or blocks where the stations rest. In the present work we sought to extend and derive GNSS applications, seeking to better understand the regional geotectonics of the Pantanal Sedimentary Basin. In this sense, the combination of SIRGAS (Geocentric Reference System for the Americas) GNSS speed data with water surface data in times of flood and drought was modeled. From the obtained results, it can be concluded that the variation in the volume and weight of the water during the times of flood and of drought are reflected in the position of the height ruler located in Corumbá-MS. This volume of water, in addition to promoting the reactivation of tectonic structures, exerts a lubricating effect on regional faults and fractures, and may act as a facilitator or inducer of regional earthquake

Pesca do apaiari, Astronotus ocellatus (Agassiz, 1831), e perfil socioeconômico dos pescadores artesanais de uma região da Amazônia brasileira

The artisanal fishery is an important economic and subsistence activity among traditional populations in the Amazon Region. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the fishery of apaiari, Astronotus ocellatus (Agassiz, 1831), and to present a socioeconomic profile of artisanal fishermen in the region lakes of Pracuúba, Amapá, Brazil. From May to August 2011 interviews were conducted using standardized forms with fishermen selected by "snowball" method and aged above 18 years old. A total of 68 fishing workers were interviewed, of which 55 were men and 13 women. It was possible to observe that fishing workers have a wide knowledge of fishery in the Region, including apaiari fishery, and that social and economic lives of the Pracuúba population depend totally of the artisanal fishery

Genomic epidemiology unveils the dynamics and spatial corridor behind the Yellow Fever virus outbreak in Southern Brazil

Despite the considerable morbidity and mortality of yellow fever virus (YFV) infections in Brazil, our understanding of disease outbreaks is hampered by limited viral genomic data. Here, through a combination of phylogenetic and epidemiological models, we reconstructed the recent transmission history of YFV within different epidemic seasons in Brazil. A suitability index based on the highly domesticated Aedes aegypti was able to capture the seasonality of reported human infections. Spatial modeling revealed spatial hotspots with both past reporting and low vaccination coverage, which coincided with many of the largest urban centers in the Southeast. Phylodynamic analysis unraveled the circulation of three distinct lineages and provided proof of the directionality of a known spatial corridor that connects the endemic North with the extra-Amazonian basin. This study illustrates that genomics linked with eco-epidemiology can provide new insights into the landscape of YFV transmission, augmenting traditional approaches to infectious disease surveillance and control

Checklist of the dipterofauna (Insecta) from Roraima, Brazil, with special reference to the Brazilian Ecological Station of Maracá

Roraima is a Brazilian state located in the northern portion of the Amazon basin, with few studies regarding its biodiversity. The Ecological Station of Maracá (Brazil, state of Roraima) harbors the third largest Brazilian pluvial island and is composed of a transitional landscape of savanna and Amazon rainforest components. Despite its ecological importance and strategic localization, few studies covered the dipterofauna of this locality. An updated checklist addressing 41 families of true flies (Diptera) occurring in Roraima is presented based on the literature and the specimens collected during a field expedition that occurred in 2015. This checklist brings several improvements such as new records of 165 taxa to the state of Roraima, 29 taxa to Brazil, and 259 morphotypes, mostly likely representing undescribed species
