A review on the radiological protection materiality in environmental sustainability reports
Materiality should be used as a strategic business tool, with implications beyond social, economic, and environmental responsibility in sustainability reporting. Organizations can benefit by incorporate materiality into their existing economic processes, creating a broader approach and ensuring strategies with significant social and environmental topics. This provides stakeholder engagement; prioritizes financial resources for sustainability; develops new business; identifies climate change issues; among others. In this context, aim this study was to present a review the materiality related to radiologic protection in organizational sustainability reports. The results show that radiologic protection is considered in several topics in the organizational sustainability reports evaluated, represented from issues occupational health and safety, environmental assessment suppliers, environmental compliance, local communities, and waste management. It was concluded that, in preparing the materiality matrix, it is necessary to have the methods defined advance to grant them to be reproduced and periodically reviewed. This will allow to demonstrate the sustainability evolution and its alignment with the organizations' strategies
A novel experimental procedure for lock-in thermography on solar cells
The occurrence of defects in solar cells is intrinsically related to a reduction in the efficiency and reliability of these devices. Therefore, monitoring techniques, such as lock-in thermography, electroluminescence and the I-V characteristic curve are adopted in order to evaluate the integrity of the solar cells. In the present work, a novel experimental procedure for the lock-in thermography of solar cells is proposed, aiming to improve the detection capability of the assay. Conventional techniques use pulse width modulation to operate the cell at a fixed point on the I-V curve. Instead, we propose a methodology based on a sinusoidal electric current excitation in order to extend the range of operational points that are close to the maximum power point as the cell operates in the field. Some traditional image processing techniques (principal component analysis, the fast Fourier transform and the four-step phase-shifting method) have been used to analyze the thermal images captured by an infrared camera during steady-state operation mode of the solar cells using both sinusoidal electric current signal and standard pulse width modulation procedures. Comparison between the results of both procedures found that this novel approach provides smoother and clearer delimitation of the defects. Furthermore, the contrast of the phase images was found to exhibit significant changes between the defective and non-defective regions for different modulation frequencies and types of defects. From the achieved results, it was possible to obtain a satisfactory characterization of the existing defects
Haematological and biochemical profiles during the puerperium in dairy cows – Short communication
The main aim of the current study was to assess the prevalence of anaemia in Holstein dairy cows during the puerperium, and the haematological and biochemical profile of dairy cows with and without anaemia. The study was conducted in seven dairy herds in São Paulo State, Brazil. The evaluated sample comprised a total of 336 Holstein cows. Blood samples were collected at postpartum day 25 ± 3. Haematological analysis included white blood cell, red blood cell and platelet count, haematocrit value, haemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration. The biochemical profile encompassed cholesterol, non-esterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate, albumin, globulin, fibrinogen, calcium and total bilirubin concentrations. The prevalence of anaemia was 16.3% in all herds, and this was not affected by clinical diseases, milk production, parity and body score condition. Moreover, anaemic cows had lower red blood cell count, haematocrit, haemoglobin, serum cholesterol and calcium concentrations and higher white blood cell and platelet counts, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, red cell distribution width, non-esterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate, fibrinogen and globulin concentrations when compared with non-anaemic cows. The results indicate changes in energy balance and an inflammatory process in anaemic cows
Protein methyltransferase 7 deficiency in Leishmania major increases neutrophil associated pathology in murine model
Leishmania major is the main causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Old World. In Leishmania parasites, the lack of transcriptional control is mostly compensated by post-transcriptional mechanisms. Methylation of arginine is a conserved post-translational modification executed by Protein Arginine Methyltransferase (PRMTs). The genome from L. major encodes five PRMT homologs, including the cytosolic protein associated with several RNA-binding proteins, LmjPRMT7. It has been previously reported that LmjPRMT7 could impact parasite infectivity. In addition, a more recent work has clearly shown the importance of LmjPRMT7 in RNA-binding capacity and protein stability of methylation targets, demonstrating the role of this enzyme as an important epigenetic regulator of mRNA metabolism. In this study, we unveil the impact of PRMT7-mediated methylation on parasite development and virulence. Our data reveals that higher levels of LmjPRMT7 can impair parasite pathogenicity, and that deletion of this enzyme rescues the pathogenic phenotype of an attenuated strain of L. major. Interestingly, lesion formation caused by LmjPRMT7 knockout parasites is associated with an exacerbated inflammatory reaction in the tissue correlated with an excessive neutrophil recruitment. Moreover, the absence of LmjPRMT7 also impairs parasite development within the sand fly vector Phlebotomus duboscqi. Finally, a transcriptome analysis shed light onto possible genes affected by depletion of this enzyme. Taken together, this study highlights how post-transcriptional regulation can affect different aspects of the parasite biology
Emotional, hyperactivity and inattention problems in adolescents with immunocompromising chronic diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic
Objective: To assess factors associated with emotional changes and Hyperactivity/Inattention (HI) motivated by COVID-19 quarantine in adolescents with immunocompromising diseases.
Methods: A cross-sectional study included 343 adolescents with immunocompromising diseases and 108 healthy adolescents. Online questionnaires were answered including socio-demographic data and self-rated healthcare routine during COVID-19 quarantine and validated surveys: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 (PedsQL4.0).
Results: The frequencies of abnormal emotional SDQ scores from adolescents with chronic diseases were similar to those of healthy subjects (110/343 [32%] vs. 38/108 [35%], p = 0.548), as well as abnormal hyperactivity/inattention SDQ scores (79/343 [23%] vs. 29/108 [27%], p = 0.417). Logistic regression analysis of independent variables associated with abnormal emotional scores from adolescents with chronic diseases showed: female sex (Odds Ratio [OR = 3.76]; 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) 2.00‒7.05; p < 0.001), poor sleep quality (OR = 2.05; 95% CI 1.08‒3.88; p = 0.028) and intrafamilial violence during pandemic (OR = 2.17; 95% CI 1.12‒4.19; p = 0.021) as independently associated with abnormal emotional scores, whereas total PedsQL score was inversely associated with abnormal emotional scores (OR = 0.95; 95% CI 0.93‒0.96; p < 0.0001). Logistic regression analysis associated with abnormal HI scores from patients evidenced that total PedsQL score (OR = 0.97; 95% CI 0.95‒0.99; p = 0.010], changes in medical appointments during the pandemic (OR = 0.39; 95% CI 0.19-0.79; p = 0.021), and reliable COVID-19 information (OR = 0.35; 95% CI 0.16‒0.77; p = 0.026) remained inversely associated with abnormal HI scores.
Conclusion: The present study showed emotional and HI disturbances in adolescents with chronic immunosuppressive diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. It reinforces the need to promptly implement a longitudinal program to protect the mental health of adolescents with and without chronic illnesses during future pandemics
Effects of different types of verbal encouragement on ankle force and muscle activity
The aim of this study is to investigate (i) the effect of live and recorded verbal encouragement on muscle activity and ankle force; (ii) the effect of communication/extroversion on the variables; (iii) the reliability intra and inter examiners of the variables. Twenty healthy-youngers were assessed by surface electromyography of tibialis anterior and ankle flexion force by an ergometer twice, with one week apart. No difference was found between ankle force (p = 0.373) and root mean square values (RMS) (p = 0.207) for any of the conditions assessed on day 1 nor between examiners 1 and 2 for both live and recorded conditions in RMS (p = 0.207) and force (p = 0.373). Between the 1st and 7th days, there were no differences for any of the conditions on RMS (main effect “Day” p = 0.261, “condition” p = 0.568, interaction p = 0.936) or force (main effect“Day” p = 0.889, “condition” p = 0.781, interaction p = 0.961). Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for the ankle force were, for without verbal encouragement (ICC2, k = 0.880), live verbal encouragement of examiner 1 (ICC2, k = 0.870), and recorded verbal encouragement of examiner 1 (ICC2, k = 0.920). RMS without verbal encouragement condition (ICC2, k = 0.860), live verbal encouragement of examiner 1 (ICC2, k = 0.930) and recorded verbal encouragement of examiner 1 (ICC2, k = 0.920). Reproducibility between the two examiner’s live encouragements for ankle force (ICC3, k = 0.981) and RMS (ICC3, k = 0.920). There was no effect of the presence or type of the augmented feedback in RMS and ankle force. We conclude that verbal encouragement does not influence ankle torque or muscle activity and there is good to excellent intra and inter rater reliability for subjects’ performance regardless of verbal encouragement modality. In addition, we observed that psychological traits Communication and Emotional stability does not affect the subjects’ strength performance at the ankle
