    Supporting children with genetic syndromes in the classroom: the example of 22q deletion syndrome

    An increasing number of children are likely to have a known genetic cause for their special educational needs. One such genetic condition is 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22qDS), a genetic syndrome associated with early speech and language difficulties, global and specific cognitive impairments, difficulties with attention and difficulties with social-emotional functioning. In this article the learning and behavioural strengths and needs of this genetic syndrome are described along with recommendations for classroom-based interventions. Suggested recommendations in the learning and emotional-behavioural domains for the syndrome draw on a number of approaches that have been found to be useful for children with a range of conditions including ADHD, ASD and dyscalculia. While teachers cannot be expected to know about all potential genetic causes for special educational needs, knowing that a genetic condition is likely to be associated with a pattern of relative cognitive and behavioural strengths and needs is important

    An exploration into the acceptance of male rape myths within the UK

    Rape is worldwide issue with no demographic constraint, and previous studies have explored how rape myths serve to justify sexual violence against women at the hands of men. However, this study aims to bridge the gap in the literature that fails to account for rape myths that do not follow the traditional script. 65 UK university students completed measures of rape myth acceptance and ambivalent sexism to investigate the factors associated with supporting rape myths. A multiple regression indicated that the acceptance of female rape myths predicted the acceptance of male rape myths. However, the factors involved in facilitating this acceptance differed between the genders. The findings are discussed in relation to the implications and conclude by offering directions for future research. Whilst the study is limited in some areas, such as the generalisation of findings, and the photonegative scales, it offers an interesting insight into understanding male rape myths and the factors that contribute to these attitudes within the UK

    Fourteen years after the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), border-crossing restrictions still remain with Mexico. Although studies have analyzed the impact of NAFTA trade liberalization, there has only been limited research on effects of informal trade barriers on U.S.–Mexico grain and soybean flows. This paper quantitatively measures the impact of logistic barriers impeding U.S.–Mexico grain and soybean trade.     The Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS) is a funding provision with access to specialists, additional teachers and teacher aides to support inclusion for children with high or very high learning and adaptive needs. This study used a qualitative methodology to explore the perceptions of five parents about the supports received through the ORS funding scheme including its strengths and limitations. The study was conducted in three different regular primary schools in the Central North region of New Zealand. The main themes identified were related to the nature and extent of support by the professional teams and the process of obtaining ORS funding with a clear message for more transparency. The study suggests that the efficacy of the teacher aide role, how the ORS funding is managed and the importance of transparency are all areas for further research

    Parenting from Prison: What Can Extension Educators Do?

    The number of children affected by parental incarceration has increased drastically in the last decade. Many incarcerated parents want to be good parents, and, while in prison, they can improve on their parenting skills and maintain or strengthen their relationships with their children. Extension parent educators can teach parenting skills and present ideas for staying connected while in prison. Since 1997, 139 mothers and 68 fathers have taken the Parenting From Prison class. Activities used in the class are described as well as considerations for modifying existing parenting curricula to fit the needs of incarcerated parents

    As the world becomes a closer-knit economic and academic community, teachers who have worked or completed their student teaching requirements overseas are sought after for their international experience and multicultural understanding. Previous research has explored the observations of overseas student teachers in order to understand better the classroom and foreign community experiences and to help develop overseas internship programs. In consideration of the important role cooperating teachers perform in the student teaching experience, this current research examined the inductive perceptions of cooperating teachers in order to corroborate and develop further what has been reported in student teacher studies. This research project applied qualitative methods to determine through the perspectives of cooperating teachers what elements of the student teachers’ experiences led to a successful overseas internship experience

Though it was originally a model used to design products, practitioners have found it also helps companies develop innovative mindsets throughout their organizations. This project takes Design Thinking in another direction, where it is not applied to something that already exists, but instead serves as the incubator for a marketing plan that will be used to convince small to medium-sized Western New York businesses to consider doing business in Korea. This project will give insight into how to use Design Thinking to overcome cultural and organizational hurdles by using the “customer-centric” focus of Design Thinking to find the opportunities embedded in the differences between WNY companies and potential Korean consumers
