    Rich and Ever Richer: Differential Returns Across Socio-Economic Groups

    This paper estimates rates of return across the gross wealth distribution in eight European countries. Like differential saving rates, differential rates of return matter for Post Keynesian theory, because they impact the income and wealth distribution and add an explosive element to growth models. We show that differential rates of return matter empirically by merging data on household balance sheets with long-run returns for individual asset categories. We find that (1) the composition of wealth differentiates between three socioeconomic groups: 30% are asset-poor, 65% are middle-class home owners, and the top 5% are business-owning capitalists; (2) rates of return rise across all groups; and (3) rates of return broadly follow a log-shaped function across the distribution, where inequality in the lower half of the distribution is higher than in the upper half. If socioeconomic groups are collapsed into the bottom 95% workers and top 5% capitalists, then rates of return are 5.6% for the former and 7.2% for the latter.Series: Ecological Economic Paper

    Predicting the cell death responsiveness and sensitization of glioma cells to TRAIL and temozolomide.

    Genotoxic chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ) is a mainstay of treatment for glioblastoma (GBM); however, at best, TMZ provides only modest survival benefit to a subset of patients. Recent insight into the heterogeneous nature of GBM suggests a more personalized approach to treatment may be necessary to overcome cancer drug resistance and improve patient care. These include novel therapies that can be used both alone and with TMZ to selectively reactivate apoptosis within malignant cells. For this approach to work, reliable molecular signatures that can accurately predict treatment responsiveness need to be identified first. Here, we describe the first proof-of-principle study that merges quantitative protein-based analysis of apoptosis signaling networks with data- and knowledge-driven mathematical systems modeling to predict treatment responsiveness of GBM cell lines to various apoptosis-inducing stimuli. These include monotherapies with TMZ and TRAIL, which activate the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis pathways, respectively, as well as combination therapies of TMZ+TRAIL. We also successfully employed this approach to predict whether individual GBM cell lines could be sensitized to TMZ or TRAIL via the selective targeting of Bcl-2/Bcl-xL proteins with ABT-737. This environment is often referred to as business ecosystem. Various types of business ecosystems have been presented and discussed in literature, such as innovation or platform business ecosystems. We conduct a systematic mapping study analyzing 136 papers in order to characterize types of business ecosystems. We provide an overview of 12 business ecosystem types and visualize how they interrelate with each other

    A bacterial DNA quadruplex with exceptional K<sup>+</sup> selectivity and unique structural polymorphism

    The G-rich sequence d[(G4CT)3G4] was recently identified as a potential quadruplex-forming sequence associated with loci involved in antigenic variation in the human pathogen Treponema pallidum. We found this motif to be enriched in eubacterial genomes. Employing a combination of CD spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy, analytical ultracentrifugation, and EMSA, we demonstrate that d[(G4CT)3G4] displays unique features among the many G-quadruplex-forming sequences studied so far. To our knowledge d[(G4CT)3G4] shows a so far unprecedented selectivity for K+ with even high concentrations of Na+ unable to induce pronounced G-quadruplex formation. A remarkable continuous and complete transition from an anti-parallel, monomolecular structure into a tetrameric, parallel conformation is observed upon increasing K+-concentrations.     Prevalence of and Potential Influencing Factors for Alcohol Dependence in Europe

    Alcohol use disorders (AUDs), and alcohol dependence (AD) in particular, are prevalent and associated with a large burden of disability and mortality. The aim of this study was to estimate prevalence of AD in the European Union (EU), Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland for the year 2010, and to investigate potential influencing factors. The 1-year prevalence of AD in the EU was estimated at 3.4% among people 18–64 years of age in Europe (women 1.7%, men 5.2%), resulting in close to 11 million affected people. Taking into account all people of all ages, AD, abuse and harmful use resulted in an estimate of 23 million affected people. Prevalence of AD varied widely between European countries, and was significantly impacted by drinking cultures and social norms. Correlations with level of drinking and other drinking variables and with major known outcomes of heavy drinking, such as liver cirrhosis or injury, were moderate. These results suggest a need to rethink the definition of AUDs
